This is my "Light Emitting Diode Persistence of Vision Helmet". I made it for my Gizmology class this semester.
On the end of the black arm is a vertical row of 8 red LEDs that are attached to a chip which controls the rate at which they flash. You can program short text messages into the chip via 3 buttons on it's side. When the LED POV flasher is on I then flip a switch on the helmut to engage the motor which spins the LEDs around my head. When in the dark the flashing LEDs combined with the rotational movement give the illusion of red letters floating around my head in a halo-like fashion.
I can't capture the red letters with a still or video camera so you will have to see it in person.
I will have a step-by-step DIY tutorial posted on The Ominous Moo so you can make one yourself!
Animated design of a 2' x 2' high density LED grow setup. Using Snowryder to compensate for the decreased light penetration of the LED's. Snowryder grows to a height of 12 - 14 inches giving a good yield of 15 - 25 gr per plant. In this 4 square foot area there are 16 plants...do the math! I show the use of 1, 2, and 4 LED panels. Due to the fact that the LED's can be 2 - 6" from the plants and the directional properties of LED's, I prefer the 4 panel configuration as it will tend to give less problems with shadows and compensate better for the short comings of LED's.

Pioneers first settled in the Mosquito Creek Community (Nanton area) in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. On June 22, 1903, a village was formed and named Nanton, after the late Sir Augustus Nanton (1860 – 1925). Sir Augustus Nanton was a partner in the financial firm, Osler, Hammond and Nanton, of Ontario. He was sent by the firm to the west to investigate investment in farm mortgages. Renowned for his sound judgment, he became a director for many companies, including the Canadian Pacific Railway, Hudson’s Bay Company, Great West Life and the Dominion Bank. He arranged financing of the Calgary and Edmonton Railway, sold subsequently to the C.P.R. It was his close association with these two companies that led the community to name the village, “Nanton”. Nanton was incorporated as a Town in the summer of 1907.
This postcard was sent from (Iva Scott - formerly Barr) at CONTENT, ALBERTA (5 July 1907) to her Grand-pa (John Barr) at BROMLEY, ONTARIO (10 July 1907).
It was reported in the Nanton News on 30 May 1907 - What will in all probability be the last big roundup of cattle in Alberta and likely on the continent of America will assemble at Lethbridge on June 1st to gather up the cattle that strayed from Alberta ranches during the late winter. This will mark the passing of the cowboy in Alberta, his place taken by the farmer and small rancher.
A sample of how RS1.0 are stabled in a fixture. Because all 6 LEDs are on a 9" aluminum PCB, the heat dissipation is pretty good even if some of the back surface may not be touching. What this means is that the craftsmanship of DIYer is not so demanding. :)

Brownsea Island sits in Poole harbour it is the second largest natural harbour in the world, second on to Sydney harbour in Australia. Brownsea Island ( was also known as Branksea ) is the largest of the islands in Poole Harbour in the county of Dorset, England. The island is owned by the National Trust. Much of the island is open to the public and includes areas of woodland and heath with a wide variety of wildlife, together with cliff top views across Poole Harbour and the Isle of Purbeck. The island was the location of an experimental camp in 1907 that led to the formation of the Scout movement the following year. Access is by public ferry or private boat; in 2017 the island received 133,340 visitors. The ferry trip itself is well worth the time. When I went it was £11.50 return trip. But on the way back the ferry takes a scenic route round the islands to arrive back at Poole Quay.
The island was purchased by wealthy stockbroker Charles van Raalte who used the island as a residential holiday retreat. During this time the castle was renovated and served as host to famous visitors such as Guglielmo Marconi. Robert Baden-Powell, a close friend of the van Raaltes, hosted an experimental camp for boys on the island in the summer of 1907. Brownsea was largely self-supporting, with a kitchen garden and a dairy herd. Many of the pottery factory workers had stayed on after it closed, farming and working for the owners. Charles van Raalte died in Calcutta in 1907 and his wife eventually sold the island in 1925. In 1927 it was purchased at auction by Mary Bonham-Christie for £125,000. A recluse by nature, she ordered a mass eviction of the island's residents to the mainland. The National Trust then agreed to take over responsibility for the island if enough funds were raised and in 1962 it then purchased Brownsea for £100,000. Work was carried out to prepare the island for visitors; tracks were cleared through areas overgrown with rhododendrons and firebreaks were created to prevent repetition of the 1934 fire.
Brownsea Island lies in Poole Harbour opposite the town of Poole. It is the largest of eight islands in the harbour. The island can be reached by one of the public ferries or by private boat. There is a wharf and a small dock near the main castle. The island is about 1 1⁄2 miles ( 2.4 km ) long and 3⁄4 mile ( 1.2 km ) wide and consists of 500 acres of woodland ( pine and oak trees ), heathland and salt-marsh. The entire island, except the church and a few other buildings which are leased or managed by third parties, is owned by the National Trust. Most of the buildings are situated near the small landing stage. The northern portion of the island is a Nature Reserve managed by Dorset Wildlife Trust and an important habitat for birds; this part of the island has limited public access so as not to disturb the wildlife.. A small portion to the southeast of the island, along with Brownsea Castle, is leased to the John Lewis Partnership for use as a holiday hotel for staff, and is not open to the public. The island forms part of the Studland civil parish in the Purbeck local government district. It is within the South Dorset constituency of the House of Commons and the South West England constituency of the European Parliament.
In all the time I have lived in this area I never knew there was a very lovely Church on the Island and managed to take photos and videos of my visit there both inside and out. St Mary’s Church was built in 1853, the church remains very much as it was then - its organ is pumped by hand and the only lighting comes from candles. It's a Victorian church that isfixed in the past so with no electricity or water supply. But its regular spring and summer services can attract congregations between 3 and 300 - and it remains an important part of Brownsea's small island community. A Family Service is held at St.Mary’s at 3.00pm every Sunday from May to September.
From 1st August until 8th in August 1907, Robert Baden-Powell held an experimental camp on the island, to test out his Scouting ideas. He gathered 21 boys of mixed social backgrounds ( from boy's schools in the London area and a section of boys from the Poole, Parkstone,Hamworthy, Bournemouth, and Winton Boys' Brigade units ) and held a week-long camp. The boys took part in activities such as camping, observation, woodcraft, chivalry, lifesaving and patriotism. Following the successful camp, Baden-Powell published his first book on the Scouting movement in 1908, Scouting for Boys, and the international Scouting movement grew rapidly. Boy Scouts continued to camp on the island until the 1930’s, when all public access to the island was forbidden by the island's owner. After ownership of the island transferred to the National Trust, a permanent 20 hectares or 49 acres Scout camp site was opened in 1963 by Olave Baden-Powell. In August 2007, 100 years after the first experimental camp, Brownsea Island was the focus of worldwide celebrations of the centenary of Scouting.
Enduro enthusiasts from the U.S. Army Installation Management Command headquarters took to the open road through the Texas Hill Country Friday, May 13 for IMCOM’s Motorcycle Safety Day.
Nineteen riders gathered at 9 a.m. to gear up and listen to a safety brief from Command Sgt. Maj. Neil Ciotola and Budget Analyst T.J. Love, who made sure all riders wore proper safety gear, including a helmet, eye protection, full-fingered gloves, full trousers and over-the-ankle boots. Love briefed the participants on hand signals and motorcycles safety guidelines, such as the “rule of big” when yielding to cars.
Participants fired up their motorcycles for a 100-mile scenic ride along the green waters of the Guadalupe River and up Highway 281. Judy Pukansky, a program analyst in the religious support office, led the group in a rotation formation that reduces rider anxiety. The group ended the trip with lunch at the Shadetree Saloon and Grill.
May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, and the Army is focused on reducing injuries and fatalities from motorcycle accidents among military members. Longtime motorcycle rider Ciotola, who encouraged the safety ride, rides his bike to and from work every day but is well aware of the risk and adheres to strict safety measures.
“Motorcycle riding comes down to this: it’s enjoyable, it’s a great pastime and if you let down your guard and lose your situational awareness you’re going to lose every time,” he said, explaining that a motorcycle is no match against even a “suicidal squirrel,” whereas a car simply hits the bump and drives on. “You have to be wrapped up in what you’re doing, conscious of reality and everything going on around you.”
Ciotola said he would like to conduct more rides in the future and that the event fostered camaraderie among the riders that translated from the road to the office.
“I’m proud of everyone that rode today; they subordinated themselves [to the lead rider], looked after everyone and conducted themselves as disciplined participants,” he said.

The MG Car Company got its name from Morris Garages, a dealer of Morris cars in Oxford which began producing its own customised versions to the designs of Cecil Kimber, who had joined the company as its sales manager in 1921. He was promoted to general manager in 1922,[5] a position he held until 1941 when he fell out with Lord Nuffield over procuring wartime work. Kimber died in 1945 in a railway accident.
There is some debate over when MG started. The company itself stated it to be 1924,[citation needed] although the first cars bore both Morris and MG badges and a reference to MG with the octagon badge appears in an Oxford newspaper from November 1923.[5] Others dispute this and believe that MG only properly began trading in 1925. The explanation may lie in the distinction between the MG business and the company of that name which may have come to own it later.
MG NB Magnette Airline coupé
The first cars which were rebodied Morris models used coachwork from Carbodies of Coventry and were built in premises in Alfred Lane, Oxford. Demand soon caused a move to larger premises in Bainton Road in September 1925, sharing space with the Morris radiator works. Continuing expansion meant another move in 1927 to a separate factory in Edmund Road, Cowley, Oxford,[5] near the main Morris factory and for the first time it was possible to include a production line. In 1928 the company had become large enough to warrant an identity separate from the original Morris Garages and the M.G. Car Company Limited was established in March of that year[5] and in October for the first time a stand was taken at the London Motor Show. Space again soon ran out and a search for a permanent home led to the lease of part an old leather factory in Abingdon, Oxfordshire in 1929,[5] gradually taking over more space until production ended there in 1980. The MG Car Club was founded in 1930 for owners and enthusiasts of MG cars.[6]
