Because of the high gas prices, I moved to a new house that's just 5 miles from work. With a little TLC it should fix up nicely.
After my dear wife Heather (to whom I had been married for 60 years) died in July 2006 I was desperate to find things to fill the gaping - and aching - gap left in my life.
I applied for a passport. I had a long-overdue cataract operation performed.
I collected together Heather's notepads, filled over the years with pieces of prose and verse that had caught her eye, typed them all out and had them printed and and distributed to all our friends and relations as 'Heather's Treasure'; rather more relevant, I thought, than any stone memorial.
i then decided to redecorate and refurbish part of the bungalow in which we had lived for fifty years to make it more suitable for a widower living alone and perhaps, to make it easier to sell by the beneficiaries of my will after I am called to rejoin Heather.
In the kitchen in particular I had the walls and ceiling stripped and redecorated and the original marley tiled floor exposed.
Then I had the washing machine and the cooker rearranged and moved and the kitchen units, that you can see on the left, installed.
As the room is my dining room and sitting room as well as my kitchen (I entertain guests in the sitting room at the front of the bungalow) I had my comfortable armchair positioned opposite the tv set, with a rug for my feet in front of it and the phone within easy reach, and I hung pictures of my late wife and our family on all the walls.
And did all these things fill in the gap left by my wife's death? I'm afraid that the best that I can say is that they helped - at least while the work was in progress.
