Elinchrom 500 bxri with softbox back CL to fill. 5 shot photomatix enfused. Some lightroom touchups, and sharpening and curves in CS5. Looking at it now, I would have whitened up the ceiling a tad more and should have put a second speedlight to bring up the living room in the background a stop.

this 'before' picture is a really great juxtaposition with after #3. notice the cutting boards against the backsplash, now gone.
yes, there is a wire randomly sticking out of the wall above the stove. why? nobody knows. welcome to life in an old housing project: weird wires and fixtures, ridiculous ways of getting around shoddy construction (notice the impressive level of soffitude that is our living room). i bet le corbusier never imagined this! the wire has now been coiled up tight and hidden behind a framed elvis record.
also, if anybody out there is wondering, that sparkly purple thing is a tea cozy (you can see here a little bit of the teapot it's cozying up to) made by R's mother and sent from India. one would think that homemade Indian tea cozies would be, like, i don't know, batiked or something. Not so. They have disco synthetics there, too, apparently. actually, i love this thing and i especially love how great the color looks against the new paint job. next time i go to ikea i'm going to pick up a special hook just for the cozy so that it will have a home rather than just kickin' it on the counters when not in use.
