In a large space less imposing kitchen pieces from another furniture maker would appear lost. The scale and proportions of each item remain in harmony with the space.
The house has been registered with the historic society but the kitchen is new. The orginial blue painted cabinets and dingy kitchen was the victim of a grease fire. Thank God for insurance.
My last seagull pic prompted a few questions about textures and which ones I'm using, so I thought I'd post another shot of my "kitchen."
You can see that I'm actually using three textures, and two to three layers of each, which I've blended in and out using masks and various overlay modes.
The post processing on this one got pretty extensive - about 24 layers (including 8 texture layers, 3 high-pass layers, and 9 adjustment layers). Fun!! :)
Even though there were no windows, this was actually pretty tough with not much natural light. I was so worried with the stove that I missed the flash reflection in the fridge, but I'll try to take care of that before sending.
Lighting is a single exposure.
1 - AB800 behind me bounced into breakfast area CL at about 1/2 for some faux natural lighting.
1 - strobe CR on floor bounced into open pantry door for cabinet fill
1 - strobe CR bounced into ceiling
1 - strobe CL bounced into ceiling
The narrow galley kitchen efficiently uses space in the small cabin. We made the concrete countertops and the wall shelves. The cabinets are from Ikea.
This house was extremely hard to shoot due to the wall and ceiling colors being so dark. This shot had a big window to the right....but the ambient light really stopped at about the over and became a freaking cave to the left. What would you guys have done to make this better?
I know I have a couple of odd shadows from the pendants, the under-cabinet lights are a bit blown and wrong color balance...as well as the can light on the left being messed up (fixed for final shot).
A flash-only layer didn't cut it on this one. Cabinets showed every reflection...as you can see..and it was way too flat, so I had to mix in an ambient layer. Seems too warm to me....but if I went cooler on WB....it seemed too cold.

"Hey, That Kitchen Is a Bit Small"
My building is "L" shaped and my theory is that the architect started designing the apartments at the other end of the floor and when he got to this end, it was "oops, I ran out of room....oh well". It actually works really well, except this is a two bedroom apartment, and the second largest floor plan so having a kitchen the same size as a one bedroom or studio is not optimal for rental pricing. As a result, I pay the exact same rent as the two bedroom next door, which has 160 less square feet, but a kitchen twice as big as mine. Yay me!!
In case you couldn't tell, this building was renovated into apartments in the late 1980's. Was it a requirement that all apartments done during this time period have these white cabinets with the oak trim???? Of the last 4 places I have lived, three had these exact same cabinets. I always feel at home no matter where I live, because the kitchen always looks the same!
