It seems fitting as we nestle in for the first week of fall and the inevitability of winter just around the corner, to look back at some previously shot and un-posted photos I took on Maui. For more than two decades I called this beautiful place home, and it still holds my heart.

This was another evening where I just didn't know for certain - right until the last minute - whether sunset was going to be a special one. But I had a feeling something special was going to happen right after the sun dropped behind the island of Lanai, and the sky did not disappoint.

With a week or more of frigid temperatures behind us, and more cold days ahead - the mighty Deschutes River has started to freeze over in some of the more calm areas of the river. The streaks you see in the water are chunks of ice ambling down the river in this thirty second exposure.

The autumn equinox is upon us, and everyday the leaves transition colors a little more ... from green to gold and ultimately fire red. This pristine spot along the Deschutes River is known as Aspen, one of the most colorful spots along the river.

For obvious reasons Portland, Oregon is nicknamed Bridgetown, or, the City Of Bridges. There are at least ten bridges that connect the city back and forth between the Columbia and Willamette Rivers. I shot this from atop the Burnside Bridge in Portland's old town, and five other bridges are visible on the horizon.

This weekend marked our last camping trip of the season, and the Santiam Pass rewarded us with some of the most beautiful and intense fall colors I've seen. Just a few miles from our campsite at Belknap Hot Springs, this little bridge crossed the Scott River into an enchanted forest.

I shot this just downstream from Steelhead Falls, and the ten second exposure created what looks like scratches atop the surface of the water. The turbulence of the falls creates a frothy white foam, and the 'scratches' are simply that foam drifting downstream.

I am frequently reminded that, regardless of how compelling and amazing your photo subject is - make sure to take a look around and see what's happening beyond your peripheral vision. I happened to glance behind me just in time to see the sun's rays beaming through the trees with laser-like precision.

Iao Valley, my old muse - we will be reunited again in a couple of weeks! This special place is graced with unspeakable beauty, and the centerpiece of the park, Iao Needle seemingly touches the sky at 1,200' elevation.

Other than sharing with you the location I shot this (northwest of Tumalo Reservoir along a dirt road in the middle of alpine desert) ... there are simply no words I could add here that would do justice to the sheer beauty, and the feeling I had standing here at sunrise.

The Lagrange-Lunacorp 82 "Cricket" is a vastly more popular design than its LL286 stablemate. A small, open-cockpit personal rover with adjustable-height suspension, it has proved popular with explorers, prospectors, planetary surveyors and hobbyists alike, and has been produced in 7 separate iterations now.

Though the controls are of a rather unusual keypad type, the Cricket has still proved fairly intuitive to drive; its one drawback being the lack of a passenger seat and the inability to carry any cargo.

It was a lazy, hazy Saturday this morning alongside the Deschutes River at Dillon Falls. I was hoping for an epic sunrise, however colors were subtle and muted - but still beautiful.

What a difference a couple of weeks can make. I visited the Dillon Falls area at the end of February, and it was still essentially a winter wonderland. All signs of snow and ice are gone now, and the Deschutes River looked beautiful in the glow of the setting sun last night.

This is happening right now in Bend, Oregon. The 'Two Bulls Fire' has consumed more than 7,000 acres of pristine forest and desert alpine the past 24 hours - and the flames are on the edge of town. We are currently on evacuation notice and have everything ready to flee if the warning escalates to Stage 3.

For more than a century the Pacific City dory fleet has thrived as one of the oldest historical fishing fleets in the world. The flat-bottomed dory boats launch through the surf headed for the waters of the Pacific, and at day's end they surf the waves back to shore and slide onto the beach. Steeped in tradition the salty souls that navigate the Dory boats are hardcore and fearless, up before sunrise and braving rough seas and inclement weather everyday.

The new Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort might just be the world's only hotel with a sandbox for grownups located in the middle of its' lobby. The view from the lobby windows and lanai aren't too bad either.

In this particular spot and on this particular day, the Deschutes River just downstream from Benham Falls - the water had a subtle blue hue to it. This thirty second exposure seemed to draw out every source of light, and yielded a much more vivid blue. I added a bit of saturation to the image, but the long exposure provided most of the color you see.

On our last night in Cape Kiwanda, the sky gave us a light show with every hue of gold, orange, purple, and blue. The reflections in the tidal pools amplified the colors.

It's true. Music is the soundtrack of our lives, and when I stood here and looked out - I thought of The Eagles "Desperado". "Been out ridin' fences for so long." I discovered this beautiful ranch with insane views between Bend and Sisters.

As beautiful as Central Oregon is today, it probably wasn't much of a desirable destination during it's formative years. Over the past 1,300 years more than 50 volcanos between Bend and Portland have erupted violently - and one of the biggest is the Newberry Volcano that erupted in 690 AD. The eruption left behind a 21 mile perimeter of destruction, and ultimately created the 8,000 foot summit of what is now known as Paulina Peak. A dusty narrow, windy dirt road takes you to the very top of the summit - and from there you can see distant valleys, mountains, dormant volcanos and calderas. The magnitude of Paulina seems to generate its own weather systems too, and while I was focused on the amazing sunset that was unfolding in front of me - this meteorological curiosity was going on behind me.

Dillon Falls starts off as a dramatic 40 foot vertical drop, then becomes steep and violent class-5 rapids. Standing on the edge you feel every bit of the falls' energy and fury.

1959 was a good year. It was the year I was born, and it was also the year Hawaii became our 50th state. This photo, taken recently on the water on the south edge of Lahaina town makes me nostalgic and reminds me of a more innocent time.

This boardwalk, perched atop a sand dune high above the beach at Pacific City was the gathering place for sunset seekers like myself. The Oregon coast sky put on an amazing sunset show, and the silhouetted girl taking a selfie captured the essence of the moment perfectly for me ... complete strangers, all drawn to this spot in the universe to marvel at mother nature.

The high alpine desert ranch lands east of Bend offers some of the most dramatic scenery found anywhere in Oregon. I shot this early yesterday at Brasada Ranch after a fresh snowfall (yes, in April!), and it matched the foreground in this scene nicely with the snowcapped peaks on the horizon.

It's not easy to find, and a good hike awaits you when you arrive at the trailhead, but Steelhead Falls in Terrebonne is worth the effort. The early morning light wasn't perfect as it left one side of the falls in the shadows.

The photo's title translates to "majestic waterfall", and there isn't a more fitting name for Pa'ihi Falls along the road to Hana. The falls are roughly 7 stories high, and on any given day the falls will look completely different depending on how much rain and run-off has occured in the jungle that surrounds them.

Jeffry picked up Robby’s keypad, read aloud his story, and then stood there with a blank look on his face. Marsha stood by, clutching Jeffry’s arm, sobbing gently through it all, then wept bitterly. First Sasah and now Robby.

“At least Robby let us know how this would turn out for him,” Jeffry said as they left the gymnasium. “We won’t have to keep on wondering what became of him and how he and Sasha are together.”

Marsha wiped away her tears. “I know it’s going to be hard for me,” she sobbed again, “but you’re right. At least we have some consolation that both Robby and Sasha are okay now. They’ve seemed to have been connected by some special power that we haven’t been allowed to know.”

“I think you’re right,” Jeffry added. “But I do think that we could fell a little bit, and I mean a little bit, of that power. Wouldn’t you agree?”

Marsha thought for a moment. “I wonder if they can see and hear us talk about them.”

Jeffry continued to walk in silence as he pondered about things. Did he miss a clue during these last hours? Is there more to experience in the few minutes left of this Homecoming Halloween Weekend?

He turned to Marsha and asked her a daring question.
