It's World Book Day on 5 March 2015 folks - yes I'd forgotten as well! - until I saw the letter from the school at the bottom of my daughter's school bag!

Around the world, children - with help from schools - will be getting excited about reading and literature.

For us parents, however, this comes with a slight challenge: what fancy costume - with a literary theme - to dress them in for school on World Book Day??!!

A books themed shot here of the library at Dunham Massey in Cheshire - the library dates back to the 18th century.

Luckily, the librarian had the book open, so it acted as a reflector in fill lighting her face.

According to Wikipedia, "A telephone, or phone, is a telecommunications device that permits two or more users to conduct a conversation when they are too far apart to be heard directly.".

Similar to a mobile or cell, i guess. But i have found some differences:

-No CPU.

-No battery.

-No keypad.

-No touchscreen.

-No SIM card.

-Two cables were required. (!)

-No internet connection.

-Too big for a pocket.

The strange disc was called "rotary dial".

How did it worked? I am not sure. Too complex.

Surely you can find information in internet...

Yeees... you are right, i m not so young! :))

Macro Mondays theme: Bokeh

I shot my AGFA LUPE on my keypad for size reference for my rather prosaic bokeh photo (see first comment). I was pleased with the reflection of the blue bokeh in the glass of the lupe and the random red heart that I did not plan so I am submitting the reference shot instead.

Just a shot of my Ti-83 Plus. Amazing to think a simple phone has bags more processing power than this ever had.

After tonight's thunder, lightning, and hail storm - it was clear to me that the sky would pull out all its' tricks for sunset. I just wasn't exactly sure where the best photo op would be. So I looked at some real time satellite weather maps online and determined that my favorite Cascade muse, Sparks Lake was going to have the most potential. And it did not disappoint.

Technical stuff: this is a two minute exposure shot at 17mm, f/8 and ISO 200 with a Lee Big Stopper 10-stop filter.

This week for my Photography Class I need to take five landscape photos and five macros, guess which ones these are?

incidentally I took five macro shots (four I uploaded to Flickr) in about 30 minutes, since Joleen and I both needed to get our shots and we only have one true macro lens (the 24-70mm f/2.8L has a macro function which is great but it's not the same thing) and we waited until right before class to take our photos.

Tech Details: Canon 5D and 100mm f/2.8 macro lens on a Manfrotto 3021BPRO tripod with 322RC2 ballhead (which isn't the greatest with macro stuff), with center column horizontal to get out over the subject. Lighting provided by two Canon 580EX speedlites triggered via a Canon ST-E2 transmitter (all flash stuff set manual, no eTTL here).

One flash (the key light) was to camera right and to the side of the subject, pointed straight up with a Gary Fong LightSphere Cloud difusing it (acting as a large softbox), the other flash was to camera left and was above and over the subject diffused with a STO-FEN OmniBounce evening out the light a bit while still allowing some shadow detail. Camera triggered with a shutter release cable and using mirror lock-up to reduce any camera vibration.

A macro view of a calculator keypad depicting fuzzy math and murky numbers. The frame represents a span of one-inch.

This was one of the most boring-looking calculators I have ever seen in my entire life; I bought it for $1 at a Dollar Tree store. And when I put it under the lens it looked even worse. In fact, the closer I looked, the less photogenic it got. I have a theory that every subject has magic, it just needs to be revealed. Well, it took me more than 200 shots, with varying lenses and light configurations, to "reveal" this scene that you see here. I hope you like it...

Strobist info:

The scene was illuminated by one Nikon SB900 speedlight with snoot attached, placed 11- o'clock, slightly above camera level, and fired in Manual mode @ 1⁄32 power.

The SB900 was triggered by two PocketWizard Plus X triggers.

Lens: Helios 44M-4 f2/58mm with 20mm extension tube attached. (The aperture was f2, rather than the f3.5 that is listed in the EXIF).

Michael, everyone. Michael, Michael, Michael. He even manages it on the other side of the planet- he just finds an unlocked door. I’ve not managed to be that lucky even once, but him?! He’s got the magic touch!

As always, I had the stupid idea of taking photographs in a block of flats, something I wouldn’t even really do in the UK. I was extremely nervous as we walked up to the front door of one of the three tube-like blocks. As we got to the door, I knew we were out of luck- locked with a keypad. There was no way we’d be able to get in.

And then Michael tried the door and it opened. How does he do it?

Well aware of the cameras that were already capturing us, we dived into the nearest lift and took it right to the top. Literally tiptoeing, we made our way across to this central area. I know plenty of people have been here to take photographs before, but I was aiming to cause zero upset and leave without anyone knowing I’d invaded the space.

The faint sound of a radio or TV echoed from another floor as the darkness of the night sky loomed above.

I know, I know. Hong Kong, again! I’m not wealthy- I just keep spending all my money on going there. I don’t think they say ‘Fourth Times the Charm’ but this trip was just that - a success. For almost the entire time I kept my mental health issues at bay. It was a good trip. After three disasters - It is really nice to say that.

What, for goodness sake, is a Galileo thermometer? Glad you asked. It's a sealed glass cylinder containing a clear liquid, and several glass vessels, or floats, of varying density, which rise or fall as the surrounding temperature changes. Good to know, eh?

This one, on my computer stand, has seven colorful floats, each with a temperature gauge, ranging from 70°, 72°, 74°, 76° 78°, 80° and 82°. At the time I grabbed this shot, the gap between the two floats indicates the temperature was between 72° and 74°F.

** And for those who want to gain a little more knowledge, in order to make that degree symbol, for Windows - you just have to press the ALT key and then 0176 on the numeric keypad. Genius!

Usually when I set up for a photo op I will take a series of multiple photos, diffferent angles, exposures, and at different progessions of natural light - especially at sunset when the light is continually changing. I love the colors and reflections in this infinity pool that I shot in Wailea.

I can't even begin to count on how many evenings, mornings, sunsets and sunrises I have ventured out to Makena for - and everytime I was there with just my camera and my thoughts - one word would come to mind.Simplicity.

Maui's south shore, Makena. Not only can you witness some of the most beautiful sunsets on the island here, but you also get some of the most compelling foreground and background details as well. Perched atop a lava outcrop on the north end of Pa'ako Beach I was greeted with this perspective of Kaho'olawe, as well as Molokini in the distance.

On this morning trek to Dillon Falls, only the crackle of our feet and the dog's paws breaking through the snow's frozen upper crust could be heard. All else was silent, and the river water seemed almost still as it meandered down stream with no visible motion.

Pacific City, the funky little surf town that looks out at Cape Kiwanda might be as close to paradise as you can get along the Oregon coast - and as the last rays of the setting sun backlit the ocean and waves just before sunset, it gave the water a turquoise, tropical look.

There's something about frigid temperatures and ice flows that turns the Deschutes River water a beautiful azure, green color. These colors were marginally enhanced with some digital filters, but the water does look this.

Legend has it that Wizard Falls on the Metolious River earned its namesake because, if you stood on the east bank and looked across the river at the falls, you would see a “wizards cap.” The falls disappeared when the Wizard Falls Fish Hatchery was contructed here in 1948, as the creek that fed the falls was drawn to fill the hatchery rearing ponds.

The Metolius is twenty-nine miles from beginning to end, and its sparkling water reflects colors of bronze, emerald, and sapphire.

Sunsets remind me of those big expensive fireworks you buy for the Fourth Of July. The $40 ones that set off in multiple stages, starting with a little siss-boom-bah at the beginning ... building up to a sizzler ... then a very subtle crescendo that builds up to a triple flutterblast ... and ultimately the grand finale! Of the countless sunsets I have witnessed, they all do the same thing - in fact - if you put your camera down and walk away as soon as the sun drops below the horizon, you're usually missing the best part of the show. This parting shot was taken at Cape Kiwanda on the Oregon Coast twenty minutes after the sun had dropped into the ocean, and the sky kept pulling an amazing kaleidoscope of colors.

As I headed towards the airport to catch my mainland bound flight, this was the incredible scene that bade me farewell. Mauka (mountain) showers over the West Maui mountains, as the late afternoon sun found its way through the thick storm clouds and misty rain.

An image I have wanted to complete for this location since first photographing it over two years ago. Finally got round to putting it together...

St John's Church photographed from Birch Wood, Paddock Farm, Keele during Winter after a light snowfall, Spring as the young crop of barley is starting to show, Summer under a blue and white sky and early Autumn during the last light of the day.

As it is private land, I did ask permission for access and yes, I did send them some prints which they were very happy with!

My last post for a while, but will keep up with all your images as always...

Along the pristine Oregon Coast lies a beautiful sandy beach bay called Cape Kiwanda and a hip little surf town called Pacific City. Regardless of weather or temperature, if there's a surf swell - the surfers are out in full force in their thick wetsuits. It's also a pretty good spot to capture sunset.

Point Of Interest: To give you a reference point of the sheer scale and magnitude of this cape, if you squint and look towards the point of the sea cliffs, you can see someone standing on the edge of the bluff.

Another day of exploring in Central Oregon, and another breathtaking discovery. McKay Crossing Falls is just a thirty minute drive south of Bend and a short hike on foot. The descent, on the other hand, from the top of the falls to the base and water level was not so easy.

Oregon's breath taking Mount Hood. It's beauty and shear magnitude of size and elevation stops you dead in your tracks. Conversion to monochrome really brings out a lot of the detail in the cloud formations, and what lies beyond the swirling mist that shrouds the summit.

Another monochrome take on Cape Kiwanda's north beach. Pacific City is basically fronted by a collection of sand dunes - or sandspits as they're also called. The town's streets and sidewalks are often covered in sand, and on the beach the sand shape shifts - building mountains out of dunes, and leaving imprints of the fierce Oregon Coast weather.

Crescent Lake, Oregon.

July 27, 2014 at 5:15am. Sunrise was still a half hour away, but this is what the sky looked like as the sun slowly made it ascent over the mountains - and I had the entire beach to myself, as even the fishermen had not headed out yet.

So this is where the 'path of most resistance' (the previous photo) lead to this morning - from the trailhead high above the river right down to water level where you can stand alongside these beautiful falls. Even though the spring runoff has begun, the river levels right here are considerably lower than normal - in fact a month or so from now, there is no way you'll be able to get this close.
