Actually, as a result of this two minute exposure you really can't distinguish the horizon. The ocean and sky blend into one, especially with the cloud layer enveloping the island of Lanai in the distance.

If you venture far enough south on Maui, you can actually catch the first glimpses of sunrise out of the east as the sun inches its way over Haleakala to cast an amazing light over La Perouse Bay and Makena.

OMG, im in such desperation and anxiety with my laptop ( and the tons of data/files/photos) still unrecovered. I hope by tomorrow, all is dried up and the keypad can function as per normal.

This is the first time I'm posting photo without post processing except using Picnik. I'm terribly sorry. There's no Paintshop Pro on my sister's comp so bear with me. Will reupload once all is back to normal (fingers crossed)

Big Eddy is another beautiful spot along the Deschutes River, and the late afternoon sun cast a warm glow over the water as it made its' way downstream.
Technical stuff: f/8, ISO 100, thirty second exposure.

It would be tempting to glance past the foreground of this photo to catch the surfers riding some pretty big north shore waves - but in doing so you just might miss the 19 giant sea turtles basking in the sunset light. In over twenty years on the island this is one of the most remarkable encounters with nature I have had. Every afternoon just before sunset, these graceful creatures risk the shore break at Ho'okipa Beach Park on the north shore to beach themselves and bask in the day's last sunlight. As many as 60 sea turtles have been seen here at one time. While the turtles rest, the surfers behind them play.

I have somewhat evolved in my reticence towards HDR, in fact I think if its done well (and the jury is still out for me on this image!) - I think it can evoke a completely different mood. I have shot Secret Beach in Makena dozens of times, this is my second HDR attempt.

" Poo-ka-la-nee": hole in the sky. From shore you could see the heavy sheets of rain coming down in the distance over the ocean, and the ominous skies made it seem all but a certainty that the storm would eventually reach landfall - and that's certainly what this lady was thinking as she scurried across the resort grounds. But as the saying goes, it is a woman's perogative to change her mind - and Mother Nature did just that. The Kihei skies cleared somewhat and sunset was beautiful.

Another perspective from last weekend's Pacific City sunset series. With Cape Kiwanda and the haystack on the horizon, the ocean's shorebreak dipped in the golden rays of the sun, and a couple strolling along the beach hand in hand - the view from atop this sand dune was breathtaking.

Taken on 29 May 2004. Long gone, but sentiments even more relevant today as we approach a general election. And, unfortunately, we have Ukip nowadays. Don't vote for racists.
On this particular morning at Baby Beach in Lahaina, the ocean was calm and like a sheet of glass - making the cloud's reflections in the water vivid and almost indistinguishable from the real clouds in the sky.

This was a special morning for me. Not only did this mark the first snowfall of the season in the Cascades, but it was also a morning where my seven year old son decided to join me for the road trip. Usually it's "Dad's taking pictures again" ... but the allure of fresh snow proved irresistible, and I had my lil' wingman with me. And this is what greeted us at sunrise. Life isn't measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

Sunrise, 6:35am. Taken from the Nestucca sand spit at Bob Straub state beach park in Pacific City along the Oregon Coast. It was a rare, still and windless morning that allowed for this thirty second exposure.

I just returned from what most people consider paradise ... the tradewind breezes, swaying palms, and turquoise waters of Maui. But by definition, this serene lake along the McKenzie River Highway east of Santiam Pass here in Oregon meets all the criteria of 'paradise' - and it was the perfect spot for me and my family on Mother's Day.

I just returned from a business/vacation trip to Maui and had a chance to revisit one of my favorite spots on the island. I was there by 4am to capture some night shots and stayed through sunrise and morning's first light. Secret Beach in Makena never disappoints, and I was fortunate to have the entire beach to myself all morning.

A thirty second exposure taken at Big Eddy along the Deschutes River yesterday. Balancing carefully on a slick rock while it was snowing with camera and tripod was no easy feat, but worth the effort.

I can't begin to tell you how excited I am now that the Cascade Highway has reopened after its' seven month winter hiatus. It literally keeps me up at night, and gets me out the door in the morning before first light. And its for views like this that make it all worth while. Sunrise over Broken Top and the Three Sisters peaks.

After the initial shock, the lights came up, the music stopped, and Jeffry, Marsha, Principal Hangar and Mr. Mitri gathered around Robby’s keypad.
Marsha was totally shocked, saying in disbelief, “Bye?” and she began to cry.
Jeffry didn’t know what to say either and all he could do was to place his hand slowly on Marsha’s back as a sign of comfort. He, too, couldn’t believe what just happened.
Mr. Hangar and Mr. Mitri were also surprised, as well as Wolfman, who came down to see what had happened. “I knew he was a guy who knew his technical stuff, and I thought all this was part of the show. But…” he trailed off in unbelief as well.
Gone. Robby had totally left the building. But it was what Marsha and Jeffry had seen all along that made them start to wonder just what Robby had seen. Could he have had a part of something which he had known all along?
“We did sense that Sasha was here today, didn’t we?” Jeffry asked Marsha as she started to settle down. “I mean, more than just a memory. I think Robby knew she was actually here.”
“I thought so, too,” Marsha admitted, but couldn’t explain any further. And that other ‘being’ whom we saw…What do you make of that?” Marsha was now curious about the appearance of that other figure who was also part of this event.
“That’s hard to say,” Jeffry said. “I would wonder if there was something powerful of that one image, and Halloween just made it more powerful.”
“Was this meant to be?” Marsha started to cry again. “First we lost Sasha, and tonight we lost Robby. But how will we explain this to the authorities?” They’ll want answers, I’m sure.”
Mr. Hangar picked up Robby’s keypad. He saw there was an icon which he carefully pressed. After a short time, a message appeared on the screen. It was a note from Robby.
“Dear Friends,” it began. “You’ll probably be wondering what happened to me tonight. Let me tell you…”
One from my series 'The Way Out', entrances / exits to Council Estates.
Lessons were learned, demolitions took place and now there is a massive resurgence in the building of tower blocks and flats.
So called affordable and shared ownership schemes are invariably a stitch up. Smaller rooms and cheap and nasty build quality, along with the Grenfell Tower cladding scandal are more than a case in point.

I was hoping that the rain we received in Bend would translate to some snow up in the Cascades. It didn't, but sunrise this morning was nonetheless spectacular and a two minute exposure captured the solemn, moody, overcast skies.

My six year old son was determined to catch baby frogs to put in his bucket - and that was the only excuse I needed to head up to Sparks Lake along the Cascade Highway in time for sunset. Sunset was understated but beautiful here - but I need to return for sunrise, as I think this is more of an Eastern exposure.

I captured this photo about 200 yards downstream from Koosah Falls alongside the McKenzie River. I was focused on trying to get a shot of the actual falls, but when I looked behind me, this view of the sunlight piercing through the thick mist and spray created by the turbulence of the falls was picture perfect. The image has a grainy film quality to it, but that is just the texture of the thick mist in the air.

I was talking to my buddy Cliff about photography this morning; the reason I am so passionate about it, is that it gets me out of the house, out of my comfort zone, and rewards me with breathtaking scenery every time. Frankly, getting out of bed early sucks ... but when you witness sunrise and the day's first light illuminating the world in front of you - it makes it all worth while.

A photobombing seagull at the Oregon Coast. This attention seeking bird must have thought we were paparazzi, because he did a number of fly-bys - and this one in perfect juxtaposition between the sky, sun, and ocean.

One more from my Dillon Falls hike on 4/7/14. This is the last few hundred feet of the Deschutes River, before the water cascades over the falls. Just upstream from here the water is mellow and ambles gently downstream, but by the time it reaches this point, momentum picks up and the water begins it's decent into class 5 rapids.

It has been unseasonably cold the past week or so here in Central Oregon, with temperatures well below freezing day and night for the past ten days or so. But when the skies are crisp and clear, the magic happens at sunset.
