Cape Kiwanda at Pacific City on the Oregon coast is such a magical place, I thought I'd give it some magical colors in this twenty second exposure of dawn's early light. In actuality the colors weren't really much different than what you see here, but I gave the image some minor enhancements by using a magenta/lavender graduated filter.

For me, visiting Portland's Japanese gardens was like making a pilgramage to Mecca. One of the first images I saw that moved me and made me realize how powerful a single photograph can be - was a photo taken by Peter Lik - of this tree. I would stand in front of his photo of this tree in Peter Lik's Lahaina gallery, mesmerized. What's really deceiving about Lik's photo (and this one) is, this tree looks larger than life - but it's actually less than 5' tall. Proof again that good things come in small packages.

Standing on the north side of Cape Kiwanda, right on the edge of a weather-sculpted ledge formed from millions of years of fierce Oregon Coast storms.

Point of Interest: this thirty second exposure makes the ocean look smooth and creamy - in reality a huge swell of pounding surf was smashing against the rocks, kicking up backspray 30-40 feet high. You can see the pools of water left behind, shimmering on the rocks

An early winter swell brought huge waves and pounding surf to Maui's north shore. It was mostly unrideable close-out surf, but it was amazing to watch (and hear) from shore. I shot this at Ho'okipa Beach Park, dropping down off a reef ledge to get a water level view.

I have had a Voigtlander ultra-wide 12mm lens in my arsenal for a long time now, and have never really used it enough to appreciate the sharpness, image quality, and great star it creates in direct sunlight. No filters or effects were used.

Usually at this time of year we're not still dealing with mosquitoes around Bend - and around most of the area they haven't been a problem at all. But for some reason, this area surrounding Dillon Falls is still swarming with the little bloodsuckers. I had already been here a handful of times prior to this visit, and knew to slather myself in mosquito repellent - but it was funny watching others walk three minutes from the parking lot, and then run back to their vehicles being chased by a swarm of skeeters.

Technical stuff: :60 exposure at f/9, 19mm.

One more from last weekend's Crescent Lake series, sunrise was breathtaking ... both from it's beauty, and temperature of 28 degrees F.

I was out the door before 5 am this morning, and greeted at 5,400' elevation with a temperature of 18 degrees fahreneheit (-8 C'). It was all worth it though, as I was also greeted with this breathtaking slice of winter wonderland along the Green Lakes hiking trail. The mountain-fed stream is moving just fast enough that it doesn't freeze, while Broken Top mountain sits perched amongst the clouds.

As I returned home from my first successful trek beyond the gates of the reopened Cascade Highway yesterday, this brilliant scene caught my attention out of the corner of my eye. The heat of the water meeting the cold morning air created apparitions of mist above this pond, as the sun's rays cast long shadows from behind the trees.

With temperatures a little cooler, today was the perfect day for hike high up in the Cascades. We opted for the Green Lakes trail, walking along the aptly named Falls Creek ... I lost track after about a dozen beautiful waterfalls, this was one of my favorites.

Today's technology allows us to digitally create and manipulate an image just about any way we want. We can layer, mask, saturate, dodge, and burn a photo to create pretty much anything. This, is NOT one of those images. From Mother Nature to your Eyes, this was the mystical sunset that blessed us in Lahaina town earlier this week. In fact, the skies were so ominous all day it didn't look like sunset was going to materialize at all - until the very last moments before darkness set in.

Regardless of where I hang my hat, Maui will always be home for me. It was so nice being back to enjoy a few sunrises and sunsets, and I as I headed back to the airport, it was almost like the rain drenched clouds parted so the sun could say 'aloha' to me. At least, that's how I choose to remember it.

I will probably endure a few more sleep deprived nights, as our days of having access to the Cascade Highway and Cascade Lakes are numbered. Due to the nature defying amount of snow that falls here in the Cascade mountain range, the road is usually closed in early November and remains that way until the middle of May. It's views like this, gazing over a thin veil of ice on Sparks Lake that keeps me coming back.

Here is another rendering from this morning's session - my first of the year - at Sparks Lake, with one of the three Sisters dominating the skyline. I don't know what it is, but I find myself using a lot of religious superlatives to describe the timeless beauty of this magical place.

On my fifth visit to Proxy Falls I decided that I needed to maneuver myself into a position where I could shoot the falls with a completely different perspective. This involved inching myself up to a narrow perch roughly a third of the way up the falls on the right side, to get this photo. I then scaled myself back to the bottom and found a perch on the left side of the falls ... that photo is coming soon.

Officially designated a U.S. National Wild and Scenic River, the Metolius River is both breathtakingly beautiful and mystical. This photo was taken right at the head of the Metolius River, where the water mysteriously bubbles from springs beneath the base of Black Butte. The water emerges crystal clear and reflects all the greens and blues from beneath the surface.

"One of Oregon's crown jewels, let the clean air and pristine water of the McKenzie River restore your spirit. One of America's purest rivers, you won't find many places abundant with this much natural beauty." I didn't write this, but I concur with the poetic words of the Visit McKenzie River travel guide. The water is crystal clear, which is understandable as the river begins from an outflow of the aptly named Clear Lake. From there the McKenzie River ambles 90 miles towards the Willamette valley, creating some of Oregon's most awe-inspiring waterfalls along the way.

Another ridiculously beautiful sunset taken from the seawall on Front Street in Lahaina. The ever-present trade wind breezes were absent long enough to allow for a long exposure without much movement happening in the usually swaying palms.

Another incredible camping weekend at East Lake, 45 minutes southeast of Bend. At just shy of 6,500' elevation, it is one of the highest campgrounds in North America. This sunset, cast across the marsh that fronts East Lake greeted us on our first night.

Point Of Interest: I waded out into the marsh with camera and tripod, and was up to my ankles in slimy, squishy mud.

I took our three dogs out for a little hike through Shevlin Park this morning, and there was a light but steady drizzle coming down. The inclement weather kept most people away so the park was all but silent, except for the sound the raindrops made as they hit the leaves on the trees and splashed on the ground. Everything was washed clean and looked renewed - and the remaining fall colors seemed brighter and more vibrant than the last time I'd seen them.

One more photo from my Sparks Lake sunset session a couple of days ago. It takes a while in the high alpine desert of central Oregon, but the wildflowers are finally in full bloom now. Vistas with vast swatches of vibrant colors abound at the higher elevations, but for this particular photo, monochrome seems to work better.

I captured this chance photo op of two kayakers at Sparks Lake almost one year ago, however, I prefer this redüx after running the raw version of this image through Silver Efex and creating a film noire, more grainy and moody scene. What say you?

A last minute, long weekend roadtrip found us in Oregon's coolest surf town Pacific City. The weather was perfect and a late summer swell brought some pounding surf to shore. This was pre-sunrise, and only these two surfers, the Dory fishermen, and myself were on the beach for the magic hour.

This secluded oceanfront oasis is located in Honokawai on Maui's west side, right in front of one of the vacation condo rentals we have in our rental program. This view is 15' from the lanai doorstep, and you can hear the waves lap up on shore all day long. Paradise. Found.

Sparks Lake was so spectacular yesterday at midday, I couldn't resist getting up at 4am this morning to greet sunrise at the lake. And it did not disappoint. More to follow, but I captured this on the way back to my truck and about a half hour after sunrise.

Point of Interest: Sparks Lake is a volcanic spring-fed lake situated at an elevation of 5,450' above sea level. Air temperature this morning was 27 degrees F.

Actually, as a result of this two minute exposure you really can't distinguish the horizon. The ocean and sky blend into one, especially with the cloud layer enveloping the island of Lanai in the distance.
