There's little to suggest the present-day Northwich was once a stronghold of steam traction, nor host to a sizeable locomotive depot serving the significant local industrial interests (limestone, coal, coke, and chemical traffic typically), as well as supporting other through freight traffic from around the North-West.
The depot saw a variety of codes throughout its life but was known as 8E from 1958-1973, and thereafter NW until its closure in 1984. In the early 1960s it wasn't unusual to see up to twenty 8Fs stabled there over a weekend, but with the advent of the diesel era, and then the gradual erosion of wagonload traffic through the 1970s, this transitioned to typically a handful of class 40s, a few class 25s, and a couple of class 08 shunters. Located on the plot of land behind me on my left, the area has now been redeveloped into residential housing - in this instance accessed by Pullman Drive, rather an odd choice of name given, to my knowledge, Northwich never saw anything resembling a Pullman train.
This shot was taken from the Middlewich Road overbridge and features Sandbach Junction. The line to the left is a single track freight-only route through Middlewich which eventually joins the West Coast Main Line at Sandbach. As can be seen from the state of the rails, it still sees several trains per week. It's quite a tight triangle here and the other side of it runs between the hedge and the houses in the left middle distance. The rather duller link just in front of me from the freight loop to the Down line (towards Greenbank and Chester) sees rather less use. In steam days the turnout just here was in fact a single slip, which gave access to the Up line too - a facility locos heading for the depot would no doubt have made use of.
Much of the freight traffic passing through Northwich these days consists of domestic and industrial waste en route for processing, and biomass pellets heading from Liverpool Port to Drax Power Station. There's also some stone traffic movement too from Tunstead heading South. In this shot a clean DB Cargo 'Shed', unit 66019, was snapped approaching the station with the 10.51am Knowsley Freight Terminal - Wilton EFW Terminal (6E26) loaded waste containers.

Fradley Junction is a canal junction between Fradley and Alrewas near Lichfield, Staffordshire, England and the point at which the Coventry Canal joins the Trent and Mersey Canal. It opened in 1790, and several of the buildings around it, including The Swan public house, are grade II listed structures.

10 years and a day ago, a drive over to Harrowden Junction to capture a pair of 37s on a Stockton-Sheerness, which obviously didn`t pay off for some reason. I have been to bed since so cannot recall what happened. A test shot of 222104 is all I have to show from here on the 3rd of February 2011.
Jumping on the bandwagon here...
Running with only two of three of its ex-B&O SD40s (rebuilt as SD40-3s), the Escalante-Western unit coal train turns left at the Junction with 35 cars for loading at the El Segundo mine. The track in the foreground runs to the Lee Ranch Mine, which is currently inactive.
Sadly, this unique coal ferrying operation is slated to end in May, as the Tri-State Generation and Transmission Authority has announced its plan to close the Escalante Generating Station near Prewitt, NM by the end of the year, five years earlier than it was scheduled to close. 'Cause ETTS.
Runs remaining now number in the teens.
Although Mingo Junction gained fame as a hub of Conrail six-axle Alco Century action, many four axle Alcos also frequented the Ohio yard. Here a former Penn Central C425, still displaying its PC New Haven maintenance assignment under the cab number, visits the engine terminal.
Woodhall Junction is a disused railway station on the old Lincolnshire Loop line between Lincoln and Boston. The station opened on 17th October 1848 and closed to passengers on 5th October 1970. The line between Woodhall Junction and Lincoln now forms part of the Water Railway cycle and walking path.
All is quiet at Reading & Northern's North Reading Junction. The classic "retro" switch targets and Reading-style blue and white signage that R&N uses are a nice touch.

The junction of the A127 and A1015 roads is known as Kent Elms Corner, located in Southend on Sea, Essex.
It carries approximately 44,000 vehicles between 7am – 7pm
I positioned myself on the fairly new single 38 metre Bow Arch bridge spanning the A127 on Saturday evening at 18:11pm
I waited on the traffic lights to go green and using my 24-105mm lens at its widest angle (24.00mm) I set a 30 second exposure at F22

The village lends its name to the nearby junction of the Stroudwater Navigation and the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal, a unique example of a crossing between two separately-owned canals.
This is a popular and busy area, with three swing bridges, an active boatyard including dry dock, a visitor centre operated by the Cotswold Canals Trust and a Canal & River Trust office, historically significant listed structures, a rowing club, car parks and a café, a marina including chandlery, boat hire and charitable excursions, extensive towpath moorings, a variety of walking routes around and along the two canals, and community events.

A Delaware & Hudson Penn Division detour train begins the journey north to Binghamton, having reversed direction after entering the former Erie Jefferson Division at Jefferson Junction. The portion of the D&H main line between here and Carbondale was considered part of the Penn Division, but it had trackage rights on the Erie Jefferson division. The Jefferson Division between Carbondale and a point a few miles south of here, which was best known for the grade over Ararat, was abandoned in 1981, when the D&H purchased the DL&W main between Scranton and Binghamton. A few months after this view, when the Belden Hill tunnel enlargement was complete, the remainder of the Jefferson Division and the northern portion of the Penn Division to Nineveh were abandoned. This route had been maintained for dimensional loads, but was no longer needed.
BNSF 615 takes H-NTWBRC around the connector at 26th Street. The elevation I'm on here leads up to the Belt Railway's mainline, which this train is about to join. The viaduct it's passing under is the abandoned Manufacturers Junction Railway, which is still intact but hasn't hosted a train in over ten years.
