California Highway 190 and US Highway 395 meet in the small desert town of Olancha California in southern Owens Valley. The east side of the Sierra Nevada rise behind the town. The high point in the photo is Olancha Peak.

I've shared some photos and a bit of history of Santa Fe Junction in some earlier images. If you missed those here is a link to one: flic.kr/p/2mkNAgm

Check out that caption and the embedded link for a map if interested. Anyway, further exploration revealed that the Avenida Cesar E Chavez overpass to the north was partially closed resulting in virtually no traffic and blocked off lanes making it safe and relaxing for photography. This view looks south off the road bridge as a BNSF grain train heads to Argentine Yard crossing the diamonds on track 2088 of KCT Route 120 (the north-south corridor) and passing the searchlights at the 25th St crossing where we spend much time hanging out. Overhead an eastbound UP loaded coal train takes KCT Route 1514, the 1917 Kansas high line trestle, toward Union Station.

I highly recommend this technical route map if you're interested in learning more about how trains can be routed through the interlocking and the terminal complex as a whole: kctrailway.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/4-KCT-Map.pdf

Just finished a video of my trip to Karijini National Park. If you want to see some behind the scenes footage of this amazing place, head over to my blog and check it out.

On the last day of our trip to Karijini Mark Stothard and I did the canyoning trip down into the bottom of the gorge. This shot was taken at Junction Pool (where all the gorges meet) just under Oxters Lookout.

This tree is incredible, about a year and a half ago it fell into the water and continues to grow straight up from the water. We got to this spot at the perfect time, the light beams were backlighting the tree.

I love the contrast between the colours (red and blues in the rock) and greens in the tree and water.

More Karijini images to come.

Yesterday I was fortunate to witness - and photograph - one of the most amazing sights you can ever see in the Blue Mountains - the rapid conversion in a matter of seconds of an otherwise trickle of a waterfall into a behemoth roaring wall of thundering stormwater.

Bonus, I was at Junction Falls, which are actually 2 separate waterfalls on separate creeks, respectively just upstream of where the two creeks join into one.

First the north fall went into Beserk mode, then about 30 minutes later the south fall did likewise, so I was able to capture the transition of both.

I was already soaked to the skin on arrival, having trudged down the circuit track to firstly shoot Adeline Falls. But the rain made no difference to my eager lenses. Thank goodness I had my trusty rusty umbrella with me to keep the gear relatively dry.

The log you see at the base of the north fall eventually became completely submerged.

About 5 miles south of Stinson Yard departing Superior Wisconsin, the Soo Line routes split; One went south to the Twin Cities and the other went west to Glenwood, or Thief River Falls. It was called Junction 278 because that was the mileage from Minneapolis to that location via the Brooten Line; the first Soo Line route to arrive in the Twin Ports. On August 3, 1978, an ore mty with new GP38-2 798 and DMIR 116 headed toward Dresser to meet opposing traffic before getting off to Ironton and the Cuyuna Range. Junction 278 disappeared into time in September, 1990 when the route was abandoned.

This silo building at 43 Junction Road operated from 1893 up until 1980's. It opened as the Queen City Mills but it is more popularly known as the Campbell Flour Mills, later becoming Maple Leaf Mills. For many years, Campbell's Flour Mill was one of The Junction's largest employers. The site reportedly has been granted permission to build a supermarket here, unsure of the fate of the silo. Update: As of November 2014, demolition of theses silos is in progress.
