Ger or yurt (üi or kiz üi in Kazakh, ger in Mongolian) is a portable, felt-covered, wood lattice-framed dwelling structure traditionally used by nomads in the steppes of Central Asia. A yurt is more home-like than a tent in shape and build, with thicker walls. They are popular amongst nomads.

I just got back from over 3300km journey through North, Central and South Mongolia. It was unforgettable journey spend in these traditional and at night and early morning very cold gers, with hardly any electricity, no running water and no internet connection.

As it was not my first visit to Mongolia, I had few photos I wanted to capture already in my mind, before arriving to Mongolia. One such a photo was having traditional ger captured under star trails. As I got to Mongolia with Moon getting to its full phase I had to time it right. To get this shot I had to wake up at 3:30AM (to a very very cold night) when the moon was just about to disappear behind the horizon but was still bright enough to give those gers their long shadows and the sky lovely blue color.

Banaue rice terraces has been described as the eighth wonder of the world. Carved out of the hillside by Ifugao tribes people 2000 to 3000 years ago without the aid of machinery to provide level steps where the natives plant rice. And they are still in use today. In 1995, they were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Banaue rice terraces stretch like stepping stones to the sky - some reaching an altitude of 1500m (4920ft). It is considered as one of mankind's greatest engineering feat. If the terraces were laid end to end, they would stretch half way around the world.

This photo was taken early morning in the Lage Vuursche Forest on the way from Hilversum to Soestduinen. Lage Vuursche is a village in the Dutch province of Utrecht. It is a part of the municipality of Baarn, and lies about 5 km west of Soest, in the middle of the forest. Drakestein, the former residence of Queen Beatrix, is situated just east of the village. An oasis of rest directly next to the big city life.

The Swiss Alps (German: Schweizer Alpen, French: Alpes suisses, Italian: Alpi svizzere, Romansh: Alps svizras) are the portion of the Alps mountain range that lies within Switzerland. Because of their central position within the entire Alpine range, they are also known as the Central Alps. The highest summit in the Swiss Alps is Monte Rosa (4,634 metres (15,202 ft)) near the Swiss-Italian border. The highest mountain which lies entirely on Swiss territory is the Dom (4,545 metres (14,911 ft)).

We all picture Alps mainly with high, rocky mountains, but at some areas you can find wonderfully green hills and when you are there at the right time with wonderful deep colors.

Marken is a peninsula in the IJsselmeer, the Netherlands, located in the municipality Waterland in the province North Holland. It is a former island, which nowadays is connected to the North Holland mainland by a causeway. Also, Marken is a well-known tourist attraction, well-known for its characteristic wooden houses.

The lighthouse is commonly known as the 'Horse of Marken' because of its characteristic shape with the tall, built-on keeper's house. Most probably it is, after the 'Brandaris' on Terschelling, the best-known and the most frequently photographed lighthouse of the Netherlands. The present lighthouse was built in 1839, upon the foundations of an earlier tower that was broken down that same year. The Zuyder Zee still was open sea by then and the lighthouse was of great importance for the shipping traffic to and from Amsterdam.

Dyrhólaey (Door Island) is a 120 m high rock, created during a submarine volcanic eruption approximately 80 thousand years ago. The eruption, which formed Dyrhólaey and the pillars around it (originally parts of it), presumably took place in the same way as other submarine and subglacial eruptions. In the beginning, a major tephra eruption took place and later, when the crater reached the surface of the sea, the lava started to flow and thus ensured its existence. Dyrhólaey is a promontory reaching out into the ocean on the south coast of Iceland. It is the southernmost part of the country.

I knew that there will be Full Moon during my trip to Iceland, however I was not sure how I'll use it in my work. Thanks to my beloved TPE app on my iphone, I realized that Dyrhólaey might be perfect place to capture it... and the Moon could not have been placed any better, especially as this is the only place you can capture this rock from (just few steps to left or right).

The sunflower is native to the Central Americas. The evidence thus far is that it was first domesticated in Mexico, by at least 2600 BC. Many indigenous American peoples used the sunflower as the symbol of their solar deity, including the Aztecs and the Otomi of Mexico and the Incas in South America. Francisco Pizarro was the first European to encounter the sunflower in Tahuantinsuyo, Peru. Gold images of the flower, as well as seeds, were taken back to Spain early in the 16th century. Some researchers argue that the Spaniards tried to suppress cultivation of the sunflower because of its association with solar religion and warfare.

Sveti Stefan island has a 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) coast line in the central part of Montenegro Adriatic coast line. It is situated to approximately 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) southeast of Budva between Przno and Sveti Stefan villages. The pink sandy beaches of Sveti Stefan, Miločer Beach and Queen’s Beach are part of the coast line. The island encompasses an area of 12,400 m2 (133,000 sq ft).

In the 15th century, the island had a fortified village which was known as Divic; a Muslim village on the periphery of land on the Drina, which was renamed as Sveti Stefan, after the Christian Saint Stephen. The fortified village was built to defend against the Turks and became a haven for pirates of the Adriatic. Initially, the island with its fortress had 12 families. Later, the village came to be established in the 1800s, when the population was about 400 people. Consequent to the villages getting moved to the mainland, the island village became an exclusive resort frequented by high profile elites of the world. However, the separation of Montenegro from Yugoslavia saw the decline of this resort, in the 1990s. Villa Miločer built between 1934 and 1936 was the summer residence of Queen Marija Karadordevic (1900–1961) of the Karađorđević family of Serbia, which was refurbished as part of the Aman Sveti Stefan resorts that opened in 2008–2009.

Lake Balaton is a freshwater lake in the Transdanubian region of Hungary. It is the largest lake in Central Europe, and one of its foremost tourist destinations. As Hungary is landlocked, Lake Balaton is often called the "Hungarian Sea". The Zala River provides the largest inflow of water to the lake, and the canalized Sió is the only outflow.

The mountainous region of the northern shore is known both for its historic character and as a major wine region, while the flat southern shore is known for its resort towns. Balatonfüred and Hévíz developed early as resorts for the wealthy, but it wasn't until the late 19th century that landowners, their vines destroyed by lice, began building summer homes to rent out to the burgeoning middle classes.

The sky was excellent for a night photo session in which I should have photographed the Milky Way, so I headed to the Capo Murro Lighthouse.

Once I arrived, I started looking for a location viewed a few days before online. After a while, I found a wonderful arch that rose out in the blue sea.

I photographed the last rays of sun hitting the arch while waiting for the night session.

Shibam belongs to one of the most fascinating places I’ve ever seen and I'd like to returned there at some near future point (once situation settles bit more). When I joined Flickr, it was so I could enter a photographic competition. I never imagined, fifteen years later that I would have so many followers, have shared so many images, or have made some of the best friends I have (even ones whom I have never physically met but have connected with emotionally and spiritually). Thanks to Flickr, and the exposure it has given my work, my images have appeared in books, journals and magazines around the world, I appear on numerous websites, and I have three postage stamps all featuring my images. The world of social media can be ruthless, yet here on Flickr, I have found a kind, friendly and receptive community of like minded people ready to embrace other members. I have much to be grateful about, thanks to Flickr.

So, happy twentieth birthday, Flickr! Thank you for everything you are, and all that you do. I am paying tribute to this wonderful platform by using the Flickr livery of bright blue and hot pink in a still life using my latest obsession, cotton spools.

When it was my birthday a few months ago, a very dear friend who enjoys photography as much as I do, and knows that I collect beautiful and vintage pieces, gave me a wonderful selection of antique ribbons, buttons, buckles, lace and other fine notions. She also gave me three follow up tins of similar delightful gifts for Christmas.

Amongst the gifts was a pretty ribbon of vibrant blue and white embroidered daisies, some blue, magenta and pink crocheted daisies from Poland, some Estonian hand dyed lace and some tiny segments of crochet, all of which I have set up on the back terrace against one of my antique embroidered Art Deco doilies from the 1930s, and accessorised with some peacock blue silver and enamel buttons from Birmingham, hallmarked 1910, some tiny Japanese cloisonné vest buttons from the 1880s, some pink rose buttons from the 1960s, a Victorian spool of W. and J. Knox peacock blue linen thread and a spool of Dewhurst's Sylko Rose Pink cotton which dates from between 1938 and 1954.

W. and J. Knox Ltd was first established over two centuries ago when the Knox family set up a small textile mill in Kilbirnie to spin the locally-grown flax fibre and to manufacture linen thread. It was first registered as a company in 1778 then subsequently named W. and J. Knox in the 1800s by the sons of the founder. The Knox family was involved with the company for the first 200 years, with ownership passing through the generations, and agents being set up all over the world. Hearsay places an agent in New Zealand only ten years after Captain Cook’s discovery, and written records show trade agreements in place in the early 1800s in Canada. Cosalt plc purchased the company from Linndustries in the 1970s, with ownership passing to the local management team in 2004, following an MBO. Two centuries after opening, Knox is still based in the same Ayrshire town, and is now owned by the local management team, following an MBO from Cosalt plc in 2004.

Belle Vue Mill, commonly known as Dewhurst’s, was built by Thomas Dewhurst in 1828. It opened in 1829 as John Dewhurst & Sons and was one of Skipton’s largest spinning and weaving mills. The mill’s position next to the Leeds Liverpool Canal meant that raw cotton could be shipped in by boats from Liverpool. Finished goods would then be sent back the same way ready for distribution. Coal to power the machine’s steam engines was also delivered by barge. In 1897 Dewhurst’s was bought by the English Sewing Cotton Co. It continued to produce Sylko, one of the mill’s most famous products. It was produced in over 500 colours and sold throughout the world. Sylko cottons are still available at haberdashers today.

Europe - UK - United Kingdom - England - North West England - Cumbria - Lakes - Lake District National Park - Ullswater - 2nd largest lake in Lake District, cca 9 miles (14.5 kilometres) long & 0.75 miles (1,200 m) wide with a maximum depth of more than 60 metres (197 ft)

The Lake District, also known as The Lakes or Lakeland, is a rural area in North West England. A popular holiday destination, it is famous for its lakes and its mountains (or fells), and its associations with the early 19th century poetry and writings of William Wordsworth and the Lake Poets. The central and most-visited part of the area is contained in the Lake District National Park - one of fourteen National parks in the United Kingdom. It lies entirely within Cumbria, and is one of England's few mountainous regions. All the land in England higher than three thousand feet above sea level lies within the National Park.

Lake District is by far my favorite destination in England. It is very magical place that has such a great potential for landscape photography. However as it is always with landscape photography, you need to be lucky for the weather (especially in UK) and the light. When these two are right Lake District offers great possibilities.

Europe - Serbia - Republika Srbija - Dinaric Alps - Mount Zlatibor - Stopica cave - Stopića Pećina - Стопића пећина - Limestone cave with travertine terraces near Sirogojno

The weather was not working in in our favor during this particular part of the trip, so we decided to visit this cave instead as caves should be bad weather resistant. This theory didn't prove just right as when we finally got there through some snowy parts of the road and very slippery walkway we found out that the snow cut off all power to the cave. Luckily the local guide had large torch that we used for light-paining, which is never easy as you never know what result you get. I'm rather pleased with the result considering the circumstances and the visit to the cave was more fun this way after all !
