It took about an hour to get through -- the line went around the corner and up the hill. Everything went smoothly and everyone was cheerful; someone passed around boxes of Munchkins. I knew turnout would be higher but I did NOT expect the line to be this long -- usually I can just walk right in.
Maggie (my wife) voted for the first time today! She's a new citizen this year. Obviously, I wasn't allowed in the booth with her... this is actually me in the booth, taking pictures and generally slowing down the process. Filibuster!
Are you like me and fed up with both the Republican and Democratic parties? Then I encourage you to vote for a third party candidate. The likelihood of a third party candidate being elected is slim to none, but if enough folks vote this way, the two big parties might get their heads out of their asses.
I've been told that if any third party candidate can get 5% of the national vote, his or her party will get matching federal funds in the next presidential election. I'm trying to track down a link to supporting information. If it is true, then that's reason enough for me to vote third party. Let's get some of these establishment a-holes out of Washington and get this country running on the right track...

New Mexico is one of those "swing states" that might go either way in the election so we're under siege - we get many phone calls every day and our mailbox is full of campaign ads. To make matters worse for the two of us, we seem to still be on the party list in Colorado (another swing state), so we get mail and calls from there as well. Early voting started yesterday - we were there - it'll all be worth it when it's done, but we can't wait until it's all over!
I've been doing this photo-a-day thing for so long now that it feels like forever. But I realized today that it really hasn't, since this is the first time I've done a photo of the day on a Presidential election. Seems strange…
But in any case, I wonder how many photographs are done of little stickers like this today?

Sorry......it's been a crazy arse morning!
I wore my "I Voted" sticker all day yesterday and when I got ready to peel it off last night I could not bring myself to discard it so I found one of my Obama 08 buttons and pasted it on. This morning I showed it to my husband and discovered that he had, without knowing what I had done, done the same thing with an Obama/Biden button.
These will become treasured reminders of the day we were part of making history!
I know it's childish, but the word "duty" sometimes makes me snicker. I don't remember which show or movie it was that kept making the joke "heh heh, you said doodie", but it stuck and now when I hear people having discussion about duty, I can't help but think that to myself.
I feel sorry for all those people around the country that seem to have such a hellish time voting. I've never had any problems in either Kansas or Oklahoma. The ballots are easy to read, easy to understand, easy to mark, and easy to submit. The polling places I've been have always been easy to find with helpful and friendly workers.
Voting shouldn't be hard. If it's hard to vote where you live, your state public officials are screwing you and you should force them to make change. If you constantly have to deal with long lines, force them to pass a law making vote day a holiday. Make your "leaders" listen to you.
Here in Oklahoma, I avoid ever voting straight rooster or straight Rodan [2] (see this PDF sample ballot ). I try to find out as much as possible about individual candidates and vote based on qualifications, candidate position on issues, and other relevant data which apparently makes me weird or something, since the media and politicians seem to think I should be voting based on party affiliation, knee-jerk reactions, orthogonal moral issues, and who can repeat their disingenuous slogan the most.
This site has great information about state-by-state laws regarding photography in polling places. In Oklahoma, the relevant law is 26 Okl.St.Ann. § 7-112.

Civic duty for the day is done. Glad to see the end of this election cycle. There was a bigly line of nasty women and bad hombres waiting to cast their votes at my polling place.
I'm at the office doing paperwork, but I had to get a picture of myself with my little sticker. I love that damn sticker.
so technically its illegal for any business to give stuff away to entice people to vote... but c'mon... its not like people voted for the sole reason of getting a free tall coffee from starbucks or a free donut from krispy kreme... cos if that's the case... that's pretty sad.
its funny, i read all the stories online about the lines and lines of people waiting to vote... so i went out to my local polling place in la puente all prepared with reading materials and ipod. once i got there... no lines! sweet. so after a few mins, i was on my way to the nearby starbucks and krispy kreme... yum!
