THE TUFT OF FLOWERS
By Robert Frost
I went to turn the grass once after one
Who mowed it in the dew before the sun.
The dew was gone that made his blade so keen
Before I came to view the levelled scene.
I looked for him behind an isle of trees;
I listened for his whetstone on the breeze.
But he had gone his way, the grass all mown,
And I must be, as he had been,—alone,
‘As all must be,’ I said within my heart,
‘Whether they work together or apart.’
But as I said it, swift there passed me by
On noiseless wing a ‘wildered butterfly,
Seeking with memories grown dim o’er night
Some resting flower of yesterday’s delight.
And once I marked his flight go round and round,
As where some flower lay withering on the ground.
And then he flew as far as eye could see,
And then on tremulous wing came back to me.
I thought of questions that have no reply,
And would have turned to toss the grass to dry;
But he turned first, and led my eye to look
At a tall tuft of flowers beside a brook,
A leaping tongue of bloom the scythe had spared
Beside a reedy brook the scythe had bared.
I left my place to know them by their name,
Finding them butterfly weed when I came.
The mower in the dew had loved them thus,
By leaving them to flourish, not for us,
Nor yet to draw one thought of ours to him.
But from sheer morning gladness at the brim.
The butterfly and I had lit upon,
Nevertheless, a message from the dawn,
That made me hear the wakening birds around,
And hear his long scythe whispering to the ground,
And feel a spirit kindred to my own;
So that henceforth I worked no more alone;
But glad with him, I worked as with his aid,
And weary, sought at noon with him the shade;
And dreaming, as it were, held brotherly speech
With one whose thought I had not hoped to reach.
‘Men work together,’ I told him from the heart,
‘Whether they work together or apart.’
LUKE! This is my best friends dog who is older, blind and has diabetes like myself. He gets his injections and does very well getting around on sense of smell and hearing. To most humans, sight is the most important sense, followed by touch, sound, and smell. For dogs, the order is smell, sight, sound, and then touch, with a dog's sense of smell being by far the most important.
On a short walk with the dogs early this morning!
Have a great new year, be safe and well.

This is the "South Quad" of the Founder's Building at Royal Holloway University London.
Based in Egham, the campus is a beautiful collection of different style buildings all over the site.
The shot for me of this Quad was from the top of the steps and a panorama shot to give the two staircases a curved appearance into the centre.

Luing bull with a ring…
He’s now inside for the winter.
During the Spring and Summer he’s had the pleasure of 25 cows to service. He needs the rest 😊

In the quiet town of Bishops Castle at the far end is this church which I wandered round the grounds looking for a good viewpoint early one morning. We were staying for three nights in the Castle Hotel, where the food was amazing.
Bishops Castle and more to the point The Castle Hotel was where the landlord was once Clive of India.
Also during the Second World War the circus people were worried about their animals and in particular the elephants. So they were moved to where the hotel is now for safety. When the war was over the elephants were all collected - except one was left behind.
There are stories of this lonely elephant being walked for exercise down the main high street. Consequently all round the town are murals and features of elephants. More to follow.
Many people were walking along the Millennium Bridge as can be seen in the foreground on the right, but one person was in the same position for a long time. He was probably being photographed or watching his partner taking photos. The 20 second exposure did not capture all the other people unless they stood still or moved slowly.
This was a social walk for some members of Windsor Photographic Society. We were doing the illuminated river . London.
( www.illuminatedriver.london )
We started at Waterloo Bridge and worked our way down along the Thames to finally reach Tower Bridge to get night shots of the illuminated bridges. So many things to capture but was great fun with an extra session on an island in the middle of the road doing buses passing each other over Tower Bridge.
Thanks to Malcolm who organised the event which about 8 folks made it.
This image was using either ReeXpose App or ReeHeld App
but was tricky as people were walking fast or running at times which made the bridge jump up and down not ideal for the tripod !! The iPhone 13 Pro Max and app were set for 20 seconds exposure at ISO 1000, aperture f/1.5 focal length 5.7mm and processed in Lightroom Classic.
There’s also one on our car roof … to the left of the photograph.
There is a sign in the hotel car park saying that you park your car at your own risk, and that the hotel isn’t responsible for any damage. So that’s fair enough.
The peacock stayed on our car roof for a couple of hours, and was joined by two white peahens.
Every now and then the peacocks made a really loud screeching sound as if it were being murdered.
During our stay we noticed that the peacocks could be anywhere… on the hotel roof, cottage roofs, and sometimes in the hotel lobby.
They weren’t fazed by humans or dogs.
We’ve stayed in this hotel (Irton hall hotel) a number of times. Usually we go around bonfire night (of course covid changed this a touch), as it’s out in the sticks and there are no fireworks going off; fireworks scared our dogs.
We always request room 4. It’s a large ground floor dog friendly room. We love it.
The hotel is in the west of Cumbria and there are plenty of deserted beaches, mountains, and lakes around.
* Bonfire night is the 5th November.

I played a pre-event duet gig with a wonderful guitarist, for a Gala at The Smith Center, last night.
Put my iPhone on 10 second timer, laid in on the floor and this is the result, a wide angle view of the beautiful chapel ceiling.

A DREAM PANG
Robert Frost
I had withdrawn in forest, and my song
Was swallowed up in leaves that blew alway;
And to the forest edge you came one day
(This was my dream) and looked and pondered long,
But did not enter, though the wish was strong:
You shook your pensive head as who should say,
'I dare not - too far in his footsteps stray -
He must seek me would he undo the wrong.
Not far, but near, I stood and saw it all
Behind low boughs the trees let down outside;
And the sweet pang it cost me not to call
And tell you that I saw does still abide.
But 'tis not true that thus I dwelt aloof,
For the wood wakes, and you are here for proof.
When I got home last night these clouds caught my attention. Nothing necessarily special, but I liked the look of the clouds against the dark sky…

It’s a gorgeous county. Stunning scenery, and it appears to have so many interesting places to visit; it seems to have a castle on every corner too 😃.
We’ve really had a great time here, now we’re heading north for about 45 - 50 miles to the Scottish Borders for a week.
We’ll be sad to leave Northumberland.
Enjoying the beautiful crisp morning
Frank lives in Stacksteads, but across the valley from us. He’s a retired Painter & Decorator; we often have a chat when he and Sally come walking past our way. Sally is a collie, like Lassie.
I saw the beautiful sky whilst I was defrosting my wife’s car before she set off to work. I went to take the photo and Frank and Sally came by, so I captured them in this scene too.
Enjoy a lovely day!
