Got my computer reconnected after a rehash of my man cave/work room. Downloaded the fungi images from the trip to Burnham Beeches yesterday. Hope folks can enjoy the texture and detail of this one, lit by an LED torch and shot from underneath. Burnham Beeches has some fungi and slime mould that are very rare, but this one is not, quite common I think.

The iconic hill in Lancashire

I come from the borough of Pendle (named after the hill). Growing up we could see Pendle hill from the end of our street.

I’ve climbed it many times, and as a young teenager I’ve bivouacked on it.

It’s famous for the Lancashire witches.

At Halloween people come from all over, by the bus load, to climb it.

Because Quakerism (known then as friends) was started by George Fox as he had climbed Pendle hill the area is known as ‘1652 country’ in some Quaker circles.

The main Quaker college in Pennsylvania, USA, is called Pendle hill.

....OH PENDLE THOU STANDEST ALONE

Twixt Burnley and Clitheroe, Whalley and Colne,

Where Hodder and Ribble's fair waters do meet,

With Barley and Downham content at thy feet.

Oh Pendle, oh Pendle, majestic, sublime,

Thy praises will ring till the end of all time,

Thy beauty eternal, thy banner unfurled,

Thou dearest and grandest old hill in the world.

And when witches fly on a cold winter's night,

You must not tell a soul, and you'll bolt the door tight,

You'll sit by the fireside and keep yourself warm,

Until once again you can walk in her arms.

Oh Pendle, Oh Pendle, o'er moorland and fell,

In glorious loveliness ever to dwell,

Through life's fateful journey where e'er we may be,

We'll cease in our labours and oft think of thee.

(An old traditional song)

In our garden.

For next Spring I’m going to build a few more planters, and we’ll grow veg in them… It’ll be our first attempt.

I’ve ordered the concrete for my shed base… it’s coming Thursday morning! Exciting (and expensive) times!

When it’s a great photo opportunity, use the camera that’s available…

As we saunted around.

Other than a wedding reception or the like going on at Towneley hall there wasn’t many people about. Well not walking around, there were some kids in cars, parked up, playing music that carried in the still night air.

We just saw one other dog that came bounding over and appeared through the darkening evening, shockingly, like Cujo (the dog out of a Stephen King novel, of the same name). As it happens the big dog was a friendly soul that just wanted to meet & greet with Patches, then it shot off again through the cooling air.

EVENING IN A SUGAR ORCHARD

Robert Frost

From where I lingered in a lull in March

outside the sugar-house one night for choice,

I called the fireman with a careful voice

And bade him leave the pan and stoke the arch:

‘O fireman, give the fire another stoke,

And send more sparks up chimney with the smoke.’

I thought a few might tangle, as they did,

Among bare maple boughs, and in the rare

Hill atmosphere not cease to glow,

And so be added to the moon up there.

The moon, though slight, was moon enough to show

On every tree a bucket with a lid,

And on black ground a bear-skin rug of snow.

The sparks made no attempt to be the moon.

They were content to figure in the trees

As Leo, Orion, and the Pleiades.

And that was what the boughs were full of soon.

Neil Cave the owner of Timeline Events just out of shot on the other end of the lead. Lovely friendly dog who was enjoying the people and smells at Derek Marder's Yard.

The boathouse that is often surrounded by sea water at high tides stands out defiantly against the elements.

It is good to get down in the tram tracks to get a dynamic view point. Some times people get hooted at when a tram approaches from behind and it is not clear where you should be !!

So this scene in Bern is near one of the famous clocks and also a turning point off to the south if the tram turns right just ahead.

A number of the trams are double ended, so this is the rear of this one, until it gets to the end of the line, then the driver locks the front cab and gets seated in the rear cab. And then does the reverse trip but on different tracks of course.

2022

I’ve taken delivery of timbers that I ordered to build a new ‘L’ shaped shed. All the sheds I’ve seen for sale are either not of good quality, or cost £1000’s.

The timbers in the photograph are all just internal 4” x 2”s, verticals and horizontals, of various lengths from 16ft to 6ft.

We’ll be bolting them together.

I treated them with a stain today for added protection.

My father in law and I will be building the shed.

Each of the backsides of the ‘L’ will be about 16ft. It’s 9ft wide.

After we’ve made the framework I’ll spray the ground to get the exact footprint of the shed. Then I can sort the concrete base from that.

The outside of the shed will be tongue & groove floorboard, which I’ll stain. We’ll have the T&G extended down in front of the concrete base, so the concrete won’t be seen externally.

I’ll dig a shallow trench to take an armoured cable, so we can get electricity to the shed.

The roof will be plywood with mineral felt on top of that.

There’ll be three compartments in the shed… one for dirty stuff like my concrete mixer, one for clean items like garden furniture, and one a workshop for me and my tools.

There are two external doors and windows, and one internal door.

I’ll flag an area for a patio outside of the shed.

After this I can start to landscape , fresh soil and new turf for the lawns. We’ll have some raised beds for flowers etc dotted around.

That’s the plan anyway…,

Well, it did on Sunday!

Not so much now though, back to grey.

Shout It From The Rooftop(s) - IMRAN™

Hope it survives the hurricane in 24 hours.

(My 131st Flickr Explore!)

Well, actually, no need to shout. Just a different point of view of how I see my world, all around. And quietly say a prayer of gratitude. According to the phone photo GPS info, I was standing 65 feet (about 20 meters) above sea level and about 45 feet (15 m) above street level.

Handheld iPhone 13 Pro Max photos stitched into a quick and dirty 360°x360° panorama. Captured on a cloudy day at my blessed home in Apollo Beach when I used my twenty-eight feet new ladder to get up to the rooftop for these photos.

Tampa Bay is covered by clouds, with a dash of blue visible somewhere around Clearwater, I think. A boat in the water across from my home is easily visible in the view.

I’m often flying somewhere for a performance. Looking forward to my tours next year!

Given the abysmal conditions in which I took this panorama it's probably one of my all-time personal favourites. The wind from the south was big, gusting at up to 80-90kms per hour.

This image, like most of my panorama images, was taken handheld with an Iphone, and it is special to me because I was being blown off my feet and it was just so hard to compose the shot. I did however have to make about 5-6 attempts to get the whole scene in, including that skinny piece of grass on the bottom centre right. In the end I ended up with this one, probably one of the most difficult shots I've ever taken.

From a performance last night…

Heading to St Paul’s church.

This was our second visit there in as many days. It was worth going again… primarily to photograph the Anglo Saxon cross.

Lower down the track there was no grass on the lane, it was just a dusty track, and that dust blew up and stuck to the back of our car…. I’d only just washed the car a couple of days before… however, the adventure and looking around the church was more than worth it.

Two whippets appeared at the top of the lane, and weren’t for moving to let us through. My wife was driving, so I got out to shoo them along. They were well behaved and followed me away. They then joined us in the churchyard.

Another photo of a performer at Lost Spirits Distillery here in Las Vegas, and another picture I wish I had my Canon 6D in hand for… The woman in this picture was taking a break from the madness of the venue. Of all the pictures I shot of here on my phone this was the best one of the bunch. I didn’t want to disturb her so I did ask her to “pose” or anything. Just tried to capture her in the moment.

Old and on it's final retirement days, the old Track Marshall still seems to be of use with hauling the fishing boats out of the water at Cley Nature Reserve beach.

Future racing driver in his beautiful electric powered car going round the pits. Jaguar 100 SS. Guess he will soon outgrow the car and want a full size one.

A wonderful view out watching the wind turbines spinning in the wind.

Her two dogs were lovely - friendly but the one on the right Adam had been in a fight apparently and a little the worse for wear.

The dog on the left is Nora if I remember correctly. Think the look-up feature suggests the dogs could be Wire Fox Terrier.

The location is Cley Nature Reserve out at the beach.

Thanks to the lady for allowing me to photograph the scene. You could watch the North Sea for hours with ships travelling by, plus supply ships doing maintenance on the turbines of the Sherringham Shoal Wind Farm, and all the other goings on.

Image taken on iPhone 13 Pro Max as it hardly ever fails to get a shot when you want everything in reasonable focus, dogs moving around are a challenge to get in focus with a DSLR, however I did get a longer shot with a long lens which I will share in a few days.

Antiques now these post boxes on St Albans Street opposite the back entrance to Windsor Castle. The blue box was celebrating air mail postage, and the red Postage Stamp dispensing box has met with an accident by the look of things.

One more from the fungi trail around Burnham Beeches. These were very impressive specimens and with some lighting from the righthand side became almost transparent. A little spider adding to the interest on the righthand stem.

The very small bokeh in the background a give away of using the iPhone 13 Pro Max, but it gives me a nice depth of field of just the fungi.

At the park

On the waste bins around the park it says “Litter is bitter, neat is sweet”. 😄😄 Brilliant wording in my opinion.

The park was nice and quiet today. Patches and me had acres to ourselves.

THE SOUND OF TREES

Robert Frost

I wonder about the trees.

Why do we wish to bear

Forever the noise of these

More than another noise

So close to our dwelling place?

We suffer them by the day

Till we lose all measure of pace,

And fixity in our joys,

And acquire a listening air.

They are that that talks of going

But never gets away;

And that talks no less for knowing,

As it grows wiser and older,

That now it means to stay.

My feet tug at the floor

And my head sways to my shoulder

Sometimes when I watch trees sway,

From the window or the door.

I shall set forth for somewhere,

I shall make the reckless choice

Some day when they are in voice

And tossing so as to scare

The white clouds over them on.

I shall have less to say,

But I shall be gone.
