A tree against the overcast skies this morning. I decided to take a walk with the camera before going to church this morning. The image was taken in the vicinity of the apartment complex where my wife and I live.

The resort has suffered much damage due to extreme winter storms over the last few years.

When she was a child my mother, who is now 99, lived and went to school not far from Salthill which was at the time a very popular holiday destination. As I have never liked Irish seaside resorts and as my mother has always described Salthill as similar to Bray I never bothered visiting until 2015. While my mother’s description is accurate to some degree I would describe it as being more attractive than Bray.

Last Wednesday I got the 401 bus from Eyre to Salthill Promenade - there is a bus every twenty minutes which is poor considering that Salthill is a popular resort. Two gentlemen that I met on the bus last year had told me that the frequency reduces to forty minutes at certain times of the day but having looked at the timetable this claim does not currently appear to be the case but last year I was at the bus stop for more than 35 minutes waiting for a bus back to the city centre.

In 2017 I had to abandon my plan to photograph the holiday resort because of the weather. Last year over a three day period I visited four times and eventually there was an hour during which it was not raining.

This year I encountered very wet and windy conditions but I was better prepared as I had brought along much better weather protection for myself and my camera. Because of a weather protection cover on the camera I was limited to using a small 25mm Zeiss Lens and the top of many images was obstructed by a loose flap blowing in the wind.

I'm interested in the molds that grow on decaying matter. Quite fascinating esp when viewed under the microscope.

A highly interesting place in geological sense but also for its history and vegetation. Most important though is the beauty of the surrounding. Such a multiplicity of colors and shapes are not to be found in one other place in nature. This fact and the comfortable natural bath has made Landmannalaugar the most visited spot in the uninhabited areas of Iceland. (www.landmannalaugar.info)

An Interesting Man

by Andrea Perego

from the book Red Moons and Cornflowers (by Andrea Perego and Daniela Biscontin, 2015)

William, 19 years old, is on a short holiday at Berneval-sur-Mer in June 1897. Here, in his hotel, he meets an interesting man, a certain Sebastian Melmoth. Unknown to him, this was Oscar Wilde, two weeks after his release from gaol.

Located on Market Square is an interesting piece of craftsmanship that was created in 1574 by master builder Michael Matzer and sculptor Matthes Vogel. It was originally an urban draw well that supplied water to the town. It is made entirely of red sandstone and is decorated with several sculptures that represent personalities of the time (mayor, town administrators, artists, etc.), each assigned to one of the planets known at the time (the ones visible to the naked eye: Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn) with their respective zodiac symbols. There are also two angels at the top carrying a shield imprinted with the town's coat of arms (hence the name Angel Well). Also, there are some interesting pieces of hardware hanging over the well opening. These are pulleys and hooks made of iron and wood; they look nearly old enough to be originals!

Interesting Store Window, Boston, MA

Just sitting there in the middle of two parking lots, the fish in the air spin as the wind catches them, and there are a few more metal cutout/silhouettes of animals sticking out of the rocks around the fire hydrant.

Curious...

An interesting newly built house with a huge snake on the wall.

we went to a nice restaurant today and tested the food for our wedding. The fiance got this nice dish. It's pork filet on pea puree and sausage (Bratwurst) on a slice of bread dumpling and hash browns. It was interesting and tasted great. We will eat there again!

Another Ahern Foden, this time an unusual half-cab eight-wheeler. (Hardly a quality pic but posted for the sake of record.)

Whilst on a trip over to a friends to celebrate a comrades success in getting his Phd (yep, a doctor, although not of medicine), I was sitting back at their home in the evening when I was taking random photos. This certainly didn't look as interesting as this in real life!

The clouds look like huge brush strokes. Temperature is dropping - maybe more springtime snow?

this was being used to take stuff to the dump which is actually called something else now? anyways this trailer was ahead of us on the way out ant I thought the paintwork looked neat

Sealed Knot at Basing House

This picture was found in class. The detail of the picture shows alot about trig functions. I chosen this picture because it was very interesting, and it attracted my eye. You know what i realized in Mr.k's classroom ,every picture that you saw on the wall ,allof it deal with math. I guess when he was teaching , i wanted to look at the time, but all of a sudden, i saw the cosine/sine function graph. During that time i was looking for a picture too.

I think that's the first time I've seen sarcasm used in an advertisement.

Boa Vista - Cap-Vert - Tour du sud

This day out takes you on a tour of Boa Vista's west side, interestingly nicknamed the 'south'. It starts in Rabil, the former capital, and the second-largest town on the island. You'll see the white-and-blue facade of St Roque church, built in 1801, and there'll be a stop at a ceramic factory to see how the locals still use traditional pottery techniques. Later, you'll bypass peachy deserts and an oasis of coconut and date palms en route to the oldest settlement on the island, Povoacao Velha. The highlight of the day, though, is reserved for when you touch down on Santa Monica Beach. This 18-kilometre-long stretch of sugar-like sand is named after its Californian counterpart, and is often included in top 10 countdowns of the world's best beaches.

( Holiday Boa Vista - Cap-Vert

Pourquoi Boa Vista?

Hey James...can you teach me how to edit like that? That was FREAKY to see...omg!

Sun Dog

Sun dogs are atmospheric phenomena caused by the refraction of sunlight through ice crystals such as those hosted in cirrus clouds. A number of specific conditions must prevail for sun dogs to form. Many observers miss them because they form close to the sun, requiring the viewer to look almost directly into the sun to see them. However, when conditions are right, sun dogs can be clearly viewed, and are quite striking, looking like smaller false suns next to the real sun.

In order for sun dogs to form, the sun must be in the sky, usually less than 45 degrees from the horizon, and in the same horizontal plane as the viewer. Small hexagonal ice crystals must also be in roughly the same plane, and be oriented parallel to the ground. If all of the ice crystals are relatively flat, sun dogs will form approximately 22 degrees away from the sun. Usually, sun dogs come in pairs, one on either side of the sun, and they are sometimes accompanied by a halo, caused by the refraction of sunlight through ice crystals oriented in multiple directions.

Parhelion is the other name for a sun dog, a reference to the fact they are found next to, or para the sun, helios. Sun dogs have been observed and written about for centuries, and sometimes were viewed as evil omens during certain periods of history. In other instances, sun dogs were considered to be augurs of good luck for the observer. Several pieces of classical art depict what appear to be sun dogs, suggesting that they were a recognized phenomenon. On rare occasions, sun dogs are quite vivid and brilliant, making it seem like there are multiple suns in the sky.

Colder regions are excellent places to observe sun dogs, although many temperate winters form enough ice crystals to create them. Patient observers can also spot moon dogs when the moon is bright, although they can be very difficult to photograph well without an excellent camera and a tripod. In both cases, look slightly to the left or right of the major light emitting body in the sky for smaller, bright objects that often have long tails facing away from the true moon or sun. Putting your fist in front of the moon or sun will help you protect your eyes and spot these interesting phenomena, and if you live in a cold region, you may see them quite frequently.
