Arriving In Lyon late in the day and it was raining. Our hotel was about one hour from Lyon so we didn't stop there and went straight to our hotel. We arrived in the dark and left the next morning in the dark to go back to Lyon. Most of the shots of Lyon are taken from the moving Coach.

Day 10 of our Cosmos tour, October 9, 2012 Lyon France.

Lyon, traditionally spelt Lyons in English, is a city in east-central France in the Rhône-Alpes region, situated between Paris and Marseille. Etymologically it relates to the Celtic God Lugoves, Lugh as does Laon and Leiden. Lyon is located approximately 470 km (292 mi) from Paris, 320 km (199 mi) from Marseille, 420 km (261 mi) from Strasbourg, 160 km (99 mi) from Geneva, 280 km (174 mi) from Turin. The residents of the city are called Lyonnais.

The population of Lyon is 484,344 (2010).Together with its suburbs and satellite towns, Lyon forms the largest conurbation in France outside Paris, with a population estimated to be 1,551,228 (2010); its overall metropolitan area was estimated to have a population of 2,118,132. Its urban region represents half of the Rhône-Alpes region population with 2.9 million inhabitants.[5] Lyon is the capital of this region, as well as the capital of the smaller Rhône département.

The city is known for its historical and architectural landmarks and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lyon was historically known as an important area for the production and weaving of silk and in modern times has developed a reputation as the capital of gastronomy in France. It has a significant role in the history of cinema due to Auguste and Louis Lumière, who invented the cinematographe in Lyon. The city is also known for its famous light festival 'Fête des Lumières' which occurs every 8 December and lasts for four days, earning Lyon the title of Capital of Lights. Legend says that the Virgin Mary saved the city from the plague and, to thank her, a statue was built. On the day it was erected, the whole city was lit by candles that its citizens had put at their windows. The local professional football team, Olympique Lyonnais, has increased Lyon's profile internationally through participation in European football championships.

Economically, Lyon is a major centre for banking as well as for chemical, pharmaceutical, and biotech industries. The city contains a significant software industry with a particular focus on video games, and in recent years has fostered a growing local start-up sector. Lyon also hosts the international headquarters of Interpol, Euronews and International Agency for Research on Cancer. By some measures, Lyon is ranked 2nd in France as an economic centre and convention centre. Lyon was ranked 8th globally and 2nd in France for innovation in 2011 It ranked 2nd in France and 38th globally in Mercer's 2010 liveability rankings.

Whose idea was it? Did the architect or the contractee decide that they wanted to put a fun-park wheel three quarters of the way up a building? It looks like the sort of thing a spoilt rich kid demanded. “... and I want a ferris wheel that I can use without leaving the building!” What would be really cool is if each “pod” was a different room, bedrooms or dining or living, but you could only get in or out when they had rotated to the right position!

Interesting plant my cousin had just bought at the local Safeway store. Used the dramatic tone filter.

Day six on our way to visit friends in Somerset before making out way to Bristol were we are staying for the tonight.

Porlock is a coastal village in Somerset. East of the village is Bury Castle, an Iron Age hill fort.

There is evidence for 10th or 11th century origin for the name Porlock as Portloc or Portloca meaning enclosure by the harbour, from the Old English port and loca. and in the Domesday Book the village was known as "Portloc".

Porlock was part of the hundred of Carhampton.

The area has links with several Romantic poets, and R. D. Blackmore, the author of Lorna Doone, and is popular with visitors. The visitor centre has exhibits and displays about the local area. Also on display are the bones of an aurochs, discovered on Porlock beach in 1999.

Commuting to and from work, I see a handful of really interesting license plates... these are a couple where I actually had a camera to take a photo of them

My wife and I went shopping at the Christian Bookstore. As we got out of the car, I couldn't help but notice the unique sky and snapped this picture.

An interesting building, and recently renovated, as mixed offices and workshops, I think. The location is the Northolme, Gainsborough.

i clipped this a few weeks ago out of the IndyStar, and have been carrying it in my lunch box...i didn't know the gentleman that passed, but the obituary intrigued me...

I actually took few shots of Buzz lightyear with various arm positions in hopes to create a good double/multiple exposure shot. However the slight movement of the subject created a blurry affect which I didn't wanted. With time running out I decided to just post one of the shots. There is always next time ;)!

I saw this and said to myself: "SELF! That's quite an interesting seating arrangement there. It looks like someone spent a little time getting it just right.".

I've seen quite a bit of this lately...no idea what it means. In a group, a Mallard hen (I've only seen hens do it) will drop her head to the water surface, stretch out her neck and paddle furiously...looking like a submarine speeding across the water. NOT being pursued or heckledy by any other duck, and NOT appearing to be looking for food...it appears to just be some kind of 'game' behavior. Most amusing.

Just found that I'm using the same camera model with Firas! Hurray!

Not really sure it's a "pet". It's actually part of the Whispering Willow Wild Sanctuary

Week 84-The Bronze Horse

Seen on the way from Regina to Saskatoon.

After a long and epic road-trip from Calgary to Winnipeg, and back to Regina, we were not up to spending hours in museums and art galleries. We spent a couple of hours enjoying the lovely salt water at Manitou Springs Resort, then continued to Saskatoon, staying on the south side. With only one full day in Saskatoon, we just did a walkabout downtown. We made a couple of trips to a beautiful little park next to the South Saskatchewan River south of town and just relaxed.
