I'm leaving with my kids at dawn Monday this week for a 4 week camping trip to Yellowstone and back, but I'd like to show them as much as I can of my old stomping grounds in Oregon (lived in Portland for 3 years) as well as possibly swinging through the Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Rainier areas on the way.

We'll probably take the better part of this week to head up through Oregon to Portland and the Columbia Gorge, either via the coast or via Crater Lake/Bend/Painted Hills, and so on, depending upon the weather.

It would be fun to meet (or better, shoot with) Flickr users on the way, perhaps in the Columbia Gorge as I pass through later this week.

Who will be in the field where we might be able to meet during the next 7-10 days or so before we turn East?

Canoeing on that magical day when solid lake ice turns to crumbly cocktail ice! I fished the cracks in the ice until about midday, the wind opening new routes and closing old ones as I went. Then I realized something of a seasonal milestone was happening right infront of me.......large patches of ice went from rigid to near fluid (literally), like a spandex skin on the lake surface. When looked at more closely it resembled perfectly interlocking, but individual cocktail ice.....like a puzzle of 2inch ice pieces floating on the lake....I am sure the Inuits have a name for this!!!

About 30 thousand New Yorkers marched in support of immigrant families and to condemn the Trump administration’s “zero-tolerance” policies on June 30, 2018. The Protect Families March and Rally, organized by dozens of advocacy groups, legal and immigrants’ rights organizations, trade unions, and concerned citizens, set off from Foley Square and marched across the Brooklyn Bridge to gather for a rally and speaking program in Cadman Plaza. Slowly but surely the 'streamer building campaign' is nearing its end. Two of these (handmade) oversized wooden boxes are now packed fully to the rim. Two more to go :-)

Some of these were tied in commission by my friend Daniel van Munster, a prize winning semi-professional fly tyer (and a mean fly fisherman himself).

When I was down at Erieau yesterday, the lake was ice-covered as far as you could see, but there was some clear water in the inner harbour. These three posts caught my eye. I would have liked to get a lower angle, but I was not about to plunge into the water at this time of the year. I toyed with the idea of a long exposure and then thought that maybe shooting like this was more effective in that it contrasts the ice, which is slowly breaking up, with the clear water that is moving now. I also liked the triangle created by the posts.

Iceout on the pond is just days away...

A massive public protest was organized in New York City on June 20, 2018, in observance of World Refugee Day. Hundreds of New Yorkers from dozens of refugee, immigrant, religious, and community organizations staged a march from Bryant Park and rally in front of the United Nations. Protesters called attention to the delicate issues by representing refugees excluded by Trump administration with life-size orange rafts symbolizing refugee ocean crossings, large-scale photos of refugees, and by reading of the names of refugees who have died in transit. This small pond is just outside our front door. The ice has been out a few weeks, and life is slowly returning.

The small flowering shrub on the left is a Dwarf Fragrant Viburnum (Viburnum farreri ‘Nanum’). Here is a link to a closeup of the Fragrant Viburnum flower: flic.kr/p/9CWjS6

The small yellow flowering plants on the far edge of the pond are Marsh Marigolds (Caltha palustris) just starting to bloom, a widespread perennial native to much of the Northern Hemisphere .
