This small pond is just outside our front door. The ice has been out a few weeks, and life is slowly returning.

The small flowering shrub on the left is a Dwarf Fragrant Viburnum (Viburnum farreri ‘Nanum’). Here is a link to a closeup of the Fragrant Viburnum flower: flic.kr/p/9CWjS6

The small yellow flowering plants on the far edge of the pond are Marsh Marigolds (Caltha palustris) just starting to bloom, a widespread perennial native to much of the Northern Hemisphere .

A massive public protest was organized in New York City on June 20, 2018, in observance of World Refugee Day. Hundreds of New Yorkers from dozens of refugee, immigrant, religious, and community organizations staged a march from Bryant Park and rally in front of the United Nations. Protesters called attention to the delicate issues by representing refugees excluded by Trump administration with life-size orange rafts symbolizing refugee ocean crossings, large-scale photos of refugees, and by reading of the names of refugees who have died in transit. The vigil also highlighted Rep. Malliotakis' anti-immigration policies, which adversely affect many people who live in her district. (Photo by Erik McGregor)

A moody overcast day at Dunton Locks near Detroit Lakes, MN. This photo was taken in the late afternoon and faces east toward an ice-free Muskrat Lake. Apr 19, 2009.

Early morning look across the lake. Ice is still clinging to the southern & southwestern shoreline, but it should be gone soon.

The patterns in the ice formed on large lakes are often interesting and show various stages of formation. Here the ice at the top and bottom of the photo consists of innumerable small crystals that froze together into a solid mass. The larger crystals formed in cracks or fissures in the sheets of the fine-grained ice.

Pelican Lake (1312' AMSL), Otter Tail County, Minnesota

Winter has apparently left Minnesota. The ice went out here on Pelican Lake last Friday, April 2nd. A brilliant sunset last night painted its now liquid surface a fiery red.

Compare this with the adjacent image in my photostream (and also in my comment below) of a wintry Lake Dillion taken this weekend in Summit County, Colorado.

Following a hearing at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit on August 14, 2018, immigrant rights leaders, activists, and prominent First Amendment lawyers held a press conference at Foley Square, to denounce the federal government’s attempts to deny immigrants access to federal courts and their first amendment protections. Lawyers argued that Ravi Ragbir has been targeted for deportation because he is an activist leader and that deporting him is therefore a violation of his First Amendment Rights. Patricia Okoumou, Statue of Liberty climber - Members of the activist group Rise and Resist organized a protest at Wall Street in the financial district on August 2, 2018 as part of the four days of protests targeting local politicians and business profiting from ICE. On their last day of actions, activists called out on big banks and businesses profiting from ICE, demanding that Wells Fargo, Bank of America, and JPMorgan Chase stop extending credit to The GEO Group and CoreCivic, the firms that profit the most from detaining immigrants. Nationally recognized immigrant rights leader Ravi Ragbir was detained while reporting to Immigration and Customs Enforcement for a routine check-in on January 11, 2018 at 26 Federal Plaza in downtown New York City. To stop his deportation, faith leaders, city council people, friends and allies surrounded the ambulance he was taken away in peacefully blocking its departure as it tried to exit the building. For 30 minutes people were knocked down, and thrown aside, but then picked themselves back up and put themselves back in front of the truck. Over 15 people were reported arrested. Reflecting the sentiments of last week’s nationwide End Family Separation protests, members of Rise and Resist planned and executed a non-violent banner drop and human banner action at the Statue of Liberty on Independence Day. An ABOLISH ICE banner was hung, and activists spelled out the same message on their shirts. (Photo by Erik McGregor)

Pelican Lake, Minnesota.

The ice is starting to go out on our lake. It will be a few days before it's all gone, but it is fun to see it in retreat.

To celebrate, here's a 30-second video from early in the morning set to the music of Vivaldi's Spring Allegro.

The lake froze over for the winter on December 5th, so it has been a relatively short ice season :-)))

An evening photo of the public beach in Detroit Lakes, MN. There is open water near shore, but it you look to the right side of the photo you can still see the ice sheet on the lake. You can also see the wind has been driving some of that ice up onto the shore. There are several open leads now on many of the big lakes although there are still all mostly covered with ice. With the warm temperatures and a good wind they could be ice-free in a day or two. Apr 22, 2009.

West Pond, Parsonsfield, Maine.

Panorama view of West Pond on this Easter Sunday.

Friday and Saturday the ice started to go out on the pond and today, Easter Sunday by mid afternoon the pond was almost completely free of ice.

The past few day's the temperatures have climbed up into the mid 80's and we have had a good deal of wind, both of which have taken the ice away and opned up the pond.

Our nesting pair of Loons are also back on the pond as of today. (:>)

Mt. Rainier National Park, Washington.

This Summer my Mt. Rainier and Olympic National Park workshop will be July 18-26.

The leaves of wasted autumn woods shall float around thy head:

The blooms of dewy spring shall gleam beneath thy feet::

But thy soul or this world must fade in the frost that binds the dead,

Ere midnight's frown and morning's smile, ere thou and peace may meet.
