The 2 white spots in the left center of the picture are the 2 mature Bald Eagles that reside at Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve. Above these 2 eagles is one of their offspring this year, a female immature eagle. A friend and I watch the 3 eagles for a couple hours this evening.
The lower eagle is the female. It is larger than the male above. The immature eagle is a female. It left the nest for the first time yesterday. While we watched the female brought a fish to the immature.
There are 2 more immature eagles in this family. It will be a thrill to see all three immatures. The one hiding in this picture is the only one we have seen since they have left the nest.

El Casar - Fiesta de las Candelas 2014

Crónica de www.guadaque.com: Colorido, estética y variedad de actos es lo que se ha podido observar este fin de semana en El Casar con la celebración de su Fiesta de las Candelas, declarada de Interés Turístico Provincial, que cada año consigue congregar a multitud de público, muchos de ellos amantes de su pueblo pero otros muchos amantes de las tradiciones y de las fiestas populares.
Pese al frío de algunos momentos, casareños y también foráneos venidos desde distintos puntos no sólo de Guadalajara, sino de provincias cercanas, se han dado cita en una fiesta en la que los actos propiamente religiosos en honor de la Virgen de la Candelaria (misa, procesión y entrega de la vela) se rodean y contagian del costumbrismo y tradición de unos ritos profanos de raíz puramente militar.
Por destacar algunos de los protagonistas de esta fiesta –que ha centrado especialmente sus actos este sábado 1 de febrero- cabe hablar de los conocidos como “funcioneros” (capitán, teniente abanderado, segundo teniente, alférez, sargento, cabos, el pagador, el yuntero y un “cura de candelas”), que ataviados convenientemente para la ocasión, son los actores indiscutibles de una fiesta en la que también aparecen en escena las picas, la yunta de mulas engalanadas de fiesta y adornadas con dibujos, y la bandera multicolor que los participantes enrollan y desenrollan usando un único brazo.
La misión de los funcioneros es la de honrar a la Virgen. Ellos son quienes deciden festejar esta fiesta y para ello se organizan en una tropa de disciplina y jerarquía militares que en vez de llevar elementos de guerra llevan símbolos de paz.
En cuanto a las picas, en origen armas en forma de lanza, en esta fiesta se visten de gala recubriéndose de cintas multicolores rematadas con ramilletes de flores, que son enarboladas y lanzadas al cielo al compás de la música de los tambores y dulzainas, instrumentos que forman parte de esta tradición festiva.
La bandera confeccionada con retales multicolor es insignia de esta singular “unidad militar”, y preside la formación. Durante la fiesta es desplegada a los pies de la Virgen en señal de respeto cuando se procesiona su imagen, y revoloteada al viento por los funcioneros componiendo un vistoso espectáculo.
Otro acto vistoso de esta fiesta que se lleva a cabo poco antes de la lectura de la Carta de Candelas es cuando los miembros de la cofradía dan varias vueltas a la plaza perseguidos a caballo por un hombre vestido con capa y capirote rojo, el pagador, que monta a caballo y porta espada. Se trata de la persona encargada por otra de satisfacer rentas, al que le siguen la yunta de mulas en su recorrido por la Plaza.
La “Carta de Candelas” es el acto licencioso que consigue congregar más casareños alrededor del balcón de la Plaza del Ayuntamiento. Desde ahí, se procede a la lectura de la Carta de Candelas. El encargado de dar lectura a estas cartas, escritas en verso, ha sido en esta ocasión Mario Carpintero.
En su carta expone en clave de humor las “comidillas y pecadillos” de los funcioneros, ocasionando en ciertas ocasiones –más de las que quisieran algunos- algún disgustillo, al salir a la luz “pecados” desconocidos hasta el momento.
En definitiva, un acto para mostrar los “pecados” de forma pública intentando el perdón colectivo, para iniciar un nuevo ciclo tras esta purificación. Un año más, la Fiesta de la Virgen Candelaria y de San Blas, ha hermanado a todo el pueblo con lazos de unión difíciles de romper.
El hecho de que a la Candelaria se le una casi en el tiempo la celebración de San Blas ha conllevado que la fiesta se haya prolongado un día más, con una misa de campaña este domingo, ante la imagen custodiada en la ermita de la Soledad.
Tras este acto religioso, como es costumbre, se ha roto la rígida disciplina castrense que caracteriza la fiesta de las Candelas, y se ha ofrecido la bandera a aquellos que voluntariamente desean mantener vivo el espíritu un año más. Aquí, el nexo generacional cobra siempre un especial protagonismo.
Durante tres días, los vecinos de El Casar han disfrutado de la fiesta en honor de la Candelaria, un festejo que consigue congregar a todo un pueblo involucrado con el amor a su Virgen, pero también con el jolgorio y el mantenimiento de sus tradiciones.
El alcalde, Pablo Sanz, ha aprovechado esta festividad para demostrar un recuerdo cariñoso y entrañable de los funcioneros que lo fueron y que ya no están entre ellos, así como para reivindicar la necesidad de que el Gobierno Regional reconsidere la consideración de la Candelaria como Fiesta de Interés Turístico Regional, “ese es mi deseo y el gran parte de los casareños”, ha puntualizado

LOS ANGELES, CA, May 1, 2011 - Cochon 555 is a one-of-a-kind traveling culinary competition and tasting event–five chefs, five pigs, five wine makers–to promote sustainable farming of heritage breed pigs. Each stop along the ten-city tour offers hard-working local farmers the opportunity to connect with like-minded agriculturalists, renowned chefs and the pork-loving public.
On July 24, All-Star Cochon at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas will bring together 10 leading chefs, four star butchers and 14 different heritage breed pigs for a sample of the best tastes from three years of Cochon 555. The ten chefs –past winners and fan favorites – will work together to prepare a ‘snout-to-tail’ menu from heritage breed pigs sourced in their local markets and then flown to Las Vegas for this ultimate pork tasting.

The spring 2013 hackNY student hackathon brought in hundreds of students to Columbia University's Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science April 6-7 for 24 hours of creative collaborative hacking on New York City startups' APIs.
NYC Startups, selected by a student organizing committee, presented their technologies at the beginning of the event, after which students formed groups to work through the night implementing their own ideas for fresh hacks built on top of these APIs.
On Sunday afternoon students presented their projects to an audience including a judging panel featuring members of the NYC startup community, which selected the final winning teams.
Since April 2010, hackNY hosts student hackathons one each semester, as well as the hackNY Fellows program, a structured internship which pairs quantitative and computational students with startups which can demonstrate a strong mentoring environment: a problem for a student to work on, a person to mentor them, and a place for them to work. Startups selected to host a student compensate student Fellows. Students enjoy free housing together and a pedagogical lecture series to introduce them to the ins and outs of joining and founding a startup in NYC.

PS: Trevalgan is a hamlet in the parish of Saint Ives, Cornwall, England, United Kingdom, where Hepworth's Trewyn Studio is located, now the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden part of Tate St Ives.
Hepworth settled in St Ives during the Second World War. Inspired by the local landscape, she began to sculpt her responses to the natural forms around her. Trevalgan is the name of a hill near her home. There, she wrote, ‘the cliffs divide as they touch the sea facing west. At this point, facing the setting sun across the Atlantic, where sky and sea blend with hills and rocks, the forms seem to enfold the watcher and lift him towards the sky.’ The sculpture is not a literal representation of the divided cliffs, but a personal expression of Hepworth’s physical and spiritual encounter with nature (Tate Gallery label)

St. Louis is an independent city and inland port in the U.S. state of Missouri. It is situated along the western bank of the Mississippi River, which marks Missouri's border with Illinois. The Missouri River merges with the Mississippi River just north of the city. These two rivers combined form the fourth longest river system in the world. The city had an estimated 2017 population of 308,626 and is the cultural and economic center of the St. Louis metropolitan area (home to nearly 3,000,000 people), which is the largest metropolitan area in Missouri, the second-largest in Illinois (after Chicago), and the 22nd-largest in the United States.
Before European settlement, the area was a regional center of Native American Mississippian culture. The city of St. Louis was founded in 1764 by French fur traders Pierre Laclède and Auguste Chouteau, and named after Louis IX of France. In 1764, following France's defeat in the Seven Years' War, the area was ceded to Spain and retroceded back to France in 1800. In 1803, the United States acquired the territory as part of the Louisiana Purchase. During the 19th century, St. Louis became a major port on the Mississippi River; at the time of the 1870 Census it was the fourth-largest city in the country. It separated from St. Louis County in 1877, becoming an independent city and limiting its own political boundaries. In 1904, it hosted the Louisiana Purchase Exposition and the Summer Olympics.
The economy of metropolitan St. Louis relies on service, manufacturing, trade, transportation of goods, and tourism. Its metro area is home to major corporations, including Anheuser-Busch, Express Scripts, Centene, Boeing Defense, Emerson, Energizer, Panera, Enterprise, Peabody Energy, Ameren, Post Holdings, Monsanto, Edward Jones, Go Jet, Purina and Sigma-Aldrich. Nine of the ten Fortune 500 companies based in Missouri are located within the St. Louis metropolitan area. The city has also become known for its growing medical, pharmaceutical, and research presence due to institutions such as Washington University in St. Louis and Barnes-Jewish Hospital. St. Louis has two professional sports teams: the St. Louis Cardinals of Major League Baseball and the St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League. One of the city's iconic sights is the 630-foot (192 m) tall Gateway Arch in the downtown area.

Busch Stadium, also referred to informally as "New Busch Stadium" or "Busch Stadium III", is a baseball stadium located in St. Louis, Missouri, the home of the St. Louis Cardinals, the city's Major League Baseball (MLB) franchise. The stadium has a seating capacity of 44,494, and contains 3,706 club seats and 61 luxury suites. It replaced Busch Memorial Stadium (aka Busch Stadium II) and occupies a portion of that stadium's former footprint. A commercial area, dubbed Ballpark Village, was built adjacent to the stadium over the remainder of the former stadium's footprint.
The stadium opened on April 4, 2006 with an exhibition between the minor league Memphis Redbirds and Springfield Cardinals, both affiliates of the St. Louis Cardinals, which Springfield won 5–3 with right-hander Mike Parisi recording the first win. The first official major league game occurred on April 10, 2006 as the Cardinals defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 6–4 behind an Albert Pujols home run and winning pitcher Mark Mulder.
In 2004, then Anheuser-Busch president August Busch IV announced the brewing-giant purchased the 20-year naming rights for the stadium. Team owner William Dewitt Jr., said: "From the day we began planning for the new ballpark, we wanted to keep the name ‘Busch Stadium.' August Busch IV and Anheuser-Busch share our vision for continuing that tradition for our great fans and the entire St. Louis community."
It is the third stadium in St. Louis to carry the name Busch Stadium. Sportsman's Park was renamed Busch Stadium in 1953. Team owner August Busch Jr. had planned to name it Budweiser Stadium, but league rules prohibited naming a venue after an alcoholic beverage. Busch named the stadium after himself & his Anheuser-Busch later introduced the "Busch Beer". The first Busch Stadium closed in 1966 and both the baseball Cardinals, and the National Football League (NFL)'s team of the same name (now the Arizona Cardinals) moved to a new multi-purpose stadium, named Busch Memorial Stadium (Busch Stadium II).

Middle Creek is a near 6,000 acre Wildlife Management Area managed by the Pennsylvania Game Commission primarily for waterfowl, grassland nesting birds, and wetland dependent species. Middle Creek hosts an interactive visitor center, seasonal wildlife driving tour, and over twenty miles of hiking trails. Other opportunities are endless for the outdoor enthusiast such as wildlife viewing, special hunts, and other forms of outdoor recreation. Middle Creek is one of just six Globally Important Bird Areas in the state.
