Even though the storm has passed, the recovery from Hurricane Matthew continues. Many of us were extremely lucky to receive only minor damage but not all of our neighbors were as fortunate. As part of the effort to help, Team Rubicon has been working with recruits from the Virginia Beach Fire Department in this home in Windsor Woods to facilitate their recovery.

Operation Blessing is also organizing volunteers to work in the community. If you would like to help, call (757) 284-9183. Volunteers will meet at CBN Corporate Support Building, 977 Centerville Turnpike, Monday through Saturday. Registration is 8 a.m., orientation is 8:30 a.m.

Team Rubicon is an international non-profit disaster response organization that unites the skills and experiences of military veterans with first responders to rapidly deploy disaster response teams, free of charge to communities affected by disasters across the country.

My trip to the Dominican Republic was not all about partying on the beach at some swanky Punta Cana resort (although I did plenty of that too). I was there with a group of about 50 of my fellow Lonza employees and our customers to participate in a volunteer effort to upgrade and repair a local school in an impoverished community - aka The Peach Project. "Peach" stands for, People Extending A Caring Hand, and is a company sponsored outreach initiative that helps out local communities. This year we did a renovation and upgrade to an elementary school. I was in charge of the electrical work -we installed new lighting and ceiling fans in all the classrooms, where previously barely anything worked at all. Others built new furniture, repaired structures, planted a garden, painted walls, etc., and our group also donated much-needed school supplies and new back packs for all the kids. The students and teachers were extremely grateful and we all felt great helping out those in need.

Brendan and Aidan had a sleepover at our house over the weekend. Although Brendan loves to prepare scrambled eggs for our breakfast, he decided to teach Aidan the tricks of the trade. Aidan turns five tomorrow and he is ready to take on serious responsibilities.
