The commanding officer (the captain) usually cons (controls) this ship from a stately leather chair surrounded by computer screens. The commanding officer directs the helmsman, who actually steers the carrier, the lee helmsman, who directs the engine room to control the speed of the ship, the Quartermaster of the Watch, who keeps track of navigation information, and a number of lookouts and support personnel. When the commanding officer is not on the bridge, he puts an Officer of the Deck in charge of operations.

The Mobile 10M performance with 300 HP Suzuki's is amazing. The visibility in the cabin like nothing you've seen before including full height windows in the side doors and spotter windows that line up with the Helmsman's sightlines in a hard over turn. CHeck this out!!! The dive door lifts out in one hand at the same time you unlock it, sweconds out and seconds in.

I like model boats and ships, and have a very small collection. I found this model of a Thai Scorpion Tailed boat in a Ban Tiwai village shop, near Chiang Mai. The stinger-shaped stern post from which it derives it's name is visible behind the aft cabin. I'm not sure if it's teak or some other wood, perhaps mango (which is becoming popular for furniture, etc.). Scorpion Tail boats were ferries on the Mae Ping and Chao Praya rivers, between Chiang Mai and Bangkok and from shore to shore locally. They have a bamboo covered area to provide shade for passengers. What prompted the upload was when a friend posted a shot of a cleat to his Flickr pages, and the forms of the two seemed so similar to me.
We arrive at the official tourist area.. Boats are returning, filled with tourists in loud orange life jackets. The boats are manned by 6 men: 5 oarsmen, and one helmsman. Some of the men are in shorts, suggesting that they actually do get into the water at some point and pull the boats upstream as shown in old photos.

3805. A composite Wikipedia account of the action off Oro Bay concludes that by striking the bridge the bomb that hit HMAS PPIRIE was fused and might have otherwise exploded in her 12-pounder magazine, destroying the ship.
While less detailed and cohesive than John Lyall's account, the Wikipedia entry on the action is also worth reading for its version of the sequence of events.
It reads '.... The ships [PIRIE and HANYANG] were 19 kilometres (10 nmi) from their destination when they were attacked by Japanese dive-bombers. The first wave saw HANYANG's steering gear damaged, while PIRIE was straddled by bombs but escaped effectively unharmed. One dive-bomber was shot down by the corvette's retaliatory fire. A second pass by the aircraft caused further damage to the merchantman.
A Zero dove on PIRIE, strafing the foredeck and the crew of the 12-pounder while the corvette's starboard Oerlikon fired back. A bomber dropped two bombs: PIRIE turned to port to avoid one, but moved directly under the other. The bomb penetrated the armoured bridge canopy, deflected off the helmsman's station, killed the gunnery officer, then struck the foredeck plating and detonated, killing six of the seven men on the main gun. Had it not struck the bridge first, the bomb would likely had penetrated the magazine before detonating and destroying the entire ship.
PIRIE was strafed another three times before the Japanese planes were driven off by Allied fighters and anti-aircraft fire from the corvette. Seven of HMAS PIRIE's men were killed in the attack, with four more seriously wounded.
Japanese propaganda, describing the corvette as a destroyer, reported that she had been sunk. Three United States Army personnel aboard PIRIE at the time [a chaplain and two officers] offered to bury the dead at sea. The chaplain later recommended that the ship and her company receive bravery honours. Both ships reached their destination.
After some repairs were effected at Oro Bay, HMAS WHYALLA escorted PIRIE back to Milne Bay. Further temporary repairs were made, and on April 14, the corvette sailed for Townsville in company with the sloop HMAS SWAN, before continuing on alone to Maryborough, where she arrived on April 19 ...' {Wikipedia account, slightly edited for syntax].

Oh sleep! it is a gentle thing,
Beloved from pole to pole!
To Mary Queen the praise be given!
She sent the gentle sleep from Heaven,
That slid into my soul.
The silly buckets on the deck,
That had so long remained,
I dreamt that they were filled with dew;
And when I awoke, it rained.
My lips were wet, my throat was cold,
My garments all were dank;
Sure I had drunken in my dreams,
And still my body drank.
I moved, and could not feel my limbs:
I was so light—almost
I thought that I had died in sleep,
And was a blessed ghost.
And soon I heard a roaring wind:
It did not come anear;
But with its sound it shook the sails,
That were so thin and sere.
The upper air burst into life!
And a hundred fire-flags sheen,
To and fro they were hurried about!
And to and fro, and in and out,
The wan stars danced between.
And the coming wind did roar more loud,
And the sails did sigh like sedge,
And the rain poured down from one black cloud;
The Moon was at its edge.
The thick black cloud was cleft, and still
The Moon was at its side:
Like waters shot from some high crag,
The lightning fell with never a jag,
A river steep and wide.
The loud wind never reached the ship,
Yet now the ship moved on!
Beneath the lightning and the Moon
The dead men gave a groan.
They groaned, they stirred, they all uprose,
Nor spake, nor moved their eyes;
It had been strange, even in a dream,
To have seen those dead men rise.
The helmsman steered, the ship moved on;
Yet never a breeze up-blew;
The mariners all 'gan work the ropes,
Where they were wont to do;
They raised their limbs like lifeless tools—
We were a ghastly crew.
The body of my brother's son
Stood by me, knee to knee:
The body and I pulled at one rope,
But he said nought to me.
'I fear thee, ancient Mariner!'
Be calm, thou Wedding-Guest!
'Twas not those souls that fled in pain,
Which to their corses came again,
But a troop of spirits blest:
For when it dawned—they dropped their arms,
And clustered round the mast;
Sweet sounds rose slowly through their mouths,
And from their bodies passed.
Around, around, flew each sweet sound,
Then darted to the Sun;
Slowly the sounds came back again,
Now mixed, now one by one.
Sometimes a-dropping from the sky
I heard the sky-lark sing;
Sometimes all little birds that are,
How they seemed to fill the sea and air
With their sweet jargoning!
And now 'twas like all instruments,
Now like a lonely flute;
And now it is an angel's song,
That makes the heavens be mute.
It ceased; yet still the sails made on
A pleasant noise till noon,
A noise like of a hidden brook
In the leafy month of June,
That to the sleeping woods all night
Singeth a quiet tune.
Till noon we quietly sailed on,
Yet never a breeze did breathe:
Slowly and smoothly went the ship,
Moved onward from beneath.
Under the keel nine fathom deep,
From the land of mist and snow,
The spirit slid: and it was he
That made the ship to go.
The sails at noon left off their tune,
And the ship stood still also.
The Sun, right up above the mast,
Had fixed her to the ocean:
But in a minute she 'gan stir,
With a short uneasy motion—
Backwards and forwards half her length
With a short uneasy motion.
Then like a pawing horse let go,
She made a sudden bound:
It flung the blood into my head,
And I fell down in a swound.
How long in that same fit I lay,
I have not to declare;
But ere my living life returned,
I heard and in my soul discerned
Two voices in the air.
'Is it he?' quoth one, 'Is this the man?
By him who died on cross,
With his cruel bow he laid full low
The harmless Albatross.
The spirit who bideth by himself
In the land of mist and snow,
He loved the bird that loved the man
Who shot him with his bow.'
The other was a softer voice,
As soft as honey-dew:
Quoth he, 'The man hath penance done,

Shivering Sands Fort was the last of the forts to be floated out and established, towards the end of 1943. In 1963 a Danish ship hit and destroyed one of the towers (presumably the helmsman's guide dog had slipped out for a smoke). In 1963 Screaming Lord Sutch set up Radia Sutch here, which became Radio City in 1964.

A shield from Stellantis to protect the former FCA Italian factories. Carlos Tavares, formerly at the helm of PSA, denies the fears of Italian workers and unions. He reassured the former FCA tricolor factories: "For Italy the good news is that Stellantis will act as a shield, as a protection for some factories, it does not represent a risk". The CEO of Stellantis, immediately after the formalization of the “equal merger” between the Peugeot group and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, wanted to personally get to know the Italian plants.
He left his Paris headquarters for a trip to Italy. On 20 January he visited Mirafiori (the cradle of Fiat), on 21 Melfi (the most advanced and productive plant with Jeeps and the 500 X), on 22 Cassino (the plant in severe crisis for Alfa Romeo sales in dive). Accompanied by John Elkann, who passed from the presidency of FCA to that of Stellantis (the Agnelli family is the relative majority shareholder with 14.4% of the shares), he wanted to know the plants, speak with the workers, discuss with the trade unions.
Italian fears are strong: will Stellantis favor France, which is politically and economically stronger than our country? In the new auto giant, which also sees the presence as a shareholder of the French government but not the Italian one, will the interests of Paris prevail?
Tavares, aware of these fears, spoke of a Stellantis shield for Italy. He reiterated: "Our commitment to the merger is not to close any production plant" and "to safeguard all jobs". It wasn't so obvious. There are those who feared that the commitment to employment was above all valid for the French part of the new auto giant born from the marriage between FCA and PSA, the fourth largest group in the world with over 8 million cars produced every year.
The fear was there and is because many Italian factories are in trouble, the use of layoffs is high. Mirafiori produces the electric Fiat 500 and expects other models, Cassino works at just 15% -20% of production capacity. Giulia and the Suv Stelvio, the two models of the Biscione, are not good. Especially the Alfa Romeo Giulia suffered a slump in sales. Other models have not arrived and only now will production of the new Maserati SUV start in Cassino: Grecale, also built in the electric version.
Tavares judged Cassino's Alfa models to be of good quality but penalized by uncalibrated marketing. He announced a relaunch of Alfa Romeo and Maserati which ended up in dire straits due to the failure of the promised new models: «The very high value of these iconic brands must be recognized. We will make assessments to understand how to support their growth and profitable remedies ». The new helmsman of Stellantis did not give details on the future business plan, but made it clear that part of the 5 billion euros resulting from the synergies produced by the merger will go to investments in the Biscione and Trident brands. Another high-end model should arrive in Cassino after the Grecale.
Somehow Tavares seems to want to resume and implement Sergio Marchionne's plan for Italy: to ensure life and employment in the factories of the Peninsula by focusing on premium brands. In 2017 the then CEO of FCA announced: "From 2020 in Italy the group will only have premium productions, with the Alfa Romeo and Maserati brands". He motivated the choice: "Our way to live in globalization is in the creation of global brands such as Jeep and iconic premium brands such as Alfa and Maserati". Unfortunately it did not happen. Marchionne died suddenly in July 2018. FCA investments went above all for the Jeep and for the American factories of the group, the sales of the Biscione and the Trident (the models are built in Grugliasco) collapsed at a glance.
Tavares has already performed a miracle: it saved Peugeot and Citroen from bankruptcy by focusing on quality, innovation and competitiveness. He incorporated Opel into the PSA group, protecting employment. Now the problem of the many different brands to be reorganized and integrated, avoiding the risk of production overlaps, is being raised. There will be an initial response when it presents the first Stellantis industrial plan.
