On December 21st, 2009, her mission complete and her back broken, BSG47 Battlestar Pacifica safely evacuated her crew to the surface of Kobol, was rigged with scuttling charges and descended into the planet's upper atmosphere.

[14:39] Marcus Perry takes a moment, then writes :"Final entry. Commander Perry. Marcus"

[14:39] Marcus Perry closes the book

[14:40] Marcus Perry reaches up and taps the DRADIS as it flickers. He grunts: "Eh.. past your bedtime sweetie."

[14:40] Marcus Perry picks up the books and puts them in his duffle bag.

[14:41] Marcus Perry swings the bag over his shoulder and looks around one last time. A warm smile on his face.

[14:42] Marcus Perry says quietly: "Good bye my friends."

As the Commander departs, the spirits of the fallen return to their stations to guide Pacifica on her final patrol.

[14:56] Syr Villota glances up at dradis, as contacts begin to blossom from the center, as Pacifica begins to break up: "Storm's comin'..."

[14:57] Frostbite Pikajuna nods. "We've been through worse."

[14:57] Syr Villota nods: "We'll be through it, soon enough."

As scuttling charges fire all across the ship, she breaks apart in the atmosphere, in a cascade of shooting stars visible to her thankful crew, huddled below.

Aboard CIC, now across the threshold in Elysium:

Frostbite Pikajuna looks around the CIC. "Guess the ship is ours, Halo."

Syr Villota looks around CIC, filling with other figures now, friends and shipmates long gone: "I expect so."

Frostbite Pikajuna glances over. "I'm sure you saw your helmet. Rough ride?"

Syr Villota grins: "Uh huh.. it didn't look so great from the inside, either." She examines the board, drawing a finger across the current watch entries: "CAP is aboard. Pods ready to button up, sir."

Frostbite Pikajuna plants her hands on the DRADIS table, looking up as the screens stop flickering. "... Angel always said I'd Command a Battlestar. Never figured it would be in the Afterlife..." She sighs. "Well... let's get this Patrol started."

Syr Villota: "No time like the present, huh?"

Frostbite Pikajuna smiles and nods. Then turns to the a former Helmsman. "We got our orders from the Admiral. Let's do it... Helm... Bring us about: new Course: Two-One-Seven, Mark-Three-Eight. Stand-By Main Engines..."

Syr Villota 's ghostly figure sways with the motion of the ship as the deck shifts.

Frostbite Pikajuna turns back to the table, looking around at everyone. Those who've come and gone. She remembers names now of those she'd forgotten. All back in their unfiorms.

Syr Villota rests her elbow on a ghostly copy of the shattered helmet seen earlier, once again shining and intact, alongside those of her wingmates and shipmates.

Frostbite Pikajuna smirks and looks around again; Arrow with the Heartbreakers, Terrapin with the Raptor drivers, Onyx with the Marines... Quickdraw... Fumes... even the Admiral standing off to the side, lording over his Flagship as he did in life. She looks up at the DRADIS screen. As they went in life, they continue in death, with their friends and comrades, patrolling and watching over Humanity. "With your permission, Sir?" After his nod, she gives the Command: "All Ahead Full."

This is by far one of the high points of casting. Its such a cool feeling looking at this pic and as they leave one by one these pics become more and more important personally.

This was a special offer. This limited, numbered and signed run is now sold out. Roboid can still be commissioned for $150, however it will be unsigned and unnumbered.

The Postcard

A postcard bearing no publisher's name that was posted in Great Yarmouth using a ½d. stamp on Saturday the 29th. August 1908. It was sent to:

Mrs. Bird,

Bermondsey,

London.

The message on the divided back of the card was as follows:

"(Postal Address)

Mrs. Littlewood,

Dear Mrs. B.,

We arrived safely. The

weather last night was

rotten, but grand this

morning.

Fine apartments.

Wish you were here.

Water Motorsports at the 1908 Summer Olympics

So what else happened on the day that the card was posted?

Well, the 29th. August 1908 was the second day of the Olympic water motorsport event at the summer Olympics.

The event was held at Southampton Water with 17 competitors (4 from France and 13 from Great Britain). Three motorboat races were contested.

Class A (open)

Class B (<60 ft)

Class C (6.5–8 m)

Various sources refer to the sport as "water motorsports", "motor boats", and "power boating".

The 1900 and 1908 Summer Games were the only ones to feature motorised sports (motor racing was featured in 1900). The IOC has never decided which events were "Olympic" and which were not.

All three events used the same distance: five laps around an 8-nautical-mile course for a total of 40 nautical miles (74 km).

In each of the events, multiple boats started; however, only one finished, due primarily to the gale that was blowing during the course of the competition.

The water motorsports event was quickly abolished, because after these games the IOC decided that the Olympics were not intended for motorized competition.

Class A — Open Class

The open class was scheduled to take place on the first day of the competition, the 28th. August. Two boats, Wolseley-Siddely and Dylan, began the race. Dylan abandoned the race partway through the first lap, with Wolseley-Siddely finishing first before the weather became too severe to continue the race.

A second attempt to run the event took place the next day after the other two races had been completed. Wolseley-Siddely again started, this time against Camille (the only French boat to take part in the competition). Wolseley-Siddely ran aground on a mud spit, leaving Camille to finish alone for the gold medal.

Class B — Under 60 feet

The B class was held on the 28th. August after the abortive first running of the open class. Again, only two boats appeared at the starting line: Quicksilver and Gyrinus.

Quicksilver became threatened by water coming in over the sides, abandoning the race. Gyrinus, a small boat with an extra crewman to bail water, was able to finish to make its crew the first Olympic champions in motorsports.

Gyrinus was designed by Sir John Isaac Thornycroft FRS, the great Victorian engineer, previously the designer and builder of the world's first torpedo boats and torpedo boat 'Destroyers'. Development of the technical features of Gyrinus (combining speed with good seaworthiness, as demonstrated in the 1908 Olympics) was described in 'Engineering', the Proceedings of the Society of Civil Engineers, on the 12th. March 1909. The Gyrinus was a Semi-Planing Mono-Hull (SPMH).

Sir John's son, Isaac Thomas Thornycroft, the Gyrinus helmsman, became a yacht designer and helmsman of J-Class racing yachts. Thomas's son, Commander Peter Thornycroft (1914–1987), carried on the family tradition, developing the SPMH as the standard Nelson Class of Pilot Boat for Trinity House (1964 to 1987) and, later, up to much larger sizes of offshore patrol vessels.

The US Navy's 350 ft./114-metre/3,200-ton/45-knot USS Freedom is the largest SPMH launched to date (2006). It combines a higher speed-for-length than would be possible with a conventional destroyer hull, good seakeeping at speed, and a high payload—characteristics that enabled the little Gyrinus to win her famous Olympic victories.

Class C — 6.5–8 metres

The first race of the 29th. August 1908 was the small class of boats. Gyrinus, which had won the B class the day before, appeared again. This time her competition was Sea Dog. Again, however, Gyrinus was the only boat to finish, as Sea Dog experienced engine problems and had to be towed off the course.

Pacific Ocean, NNS (April 19, 2018) Seaman Sandra L. SierraSoto of the USS Stockdale (DDG 106) simultaneously relays a message from the ships Conning Officer and steers the ship as acting Helmsman during an Anti-Submarine exercise. Stockdale, USS Mobile Bay (CG 53) and USS Spruance (DDG 111) are the CRUDES warships from USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) Carrier Strike Group (CSG) completing a SMWDC led CRUDES SWATT exercise. SWATTs are designed to increase warfighting proficiency, lethality, and interoperability of participating units. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Amanda A. Hayes/released)

Tavares' shield for Alfa in a coma

OPINIONS

Rodolfo Ruocco

A shield from Stellantis to protect the former FCA Italian factories. Carlos Tavares, formerly at the helm of PSA, denies the fears of Italian workers and unions. He reassured the former FCA tricolor factories: "For Italy the good news is that Stellantis will act as a shield, as a protection for some factories, it does not represent a risk". The CEO of Stellantis, immediately after the formalization of the “equal merger” between the Peugeot group and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, wanted to personally get to know the Italian plants.

He left his Paris headquarters for a trip to Italy. On 20 January he visited Mirafiori (the cradle of Fiat), on 21 Melfi (the most advanced and productive plant with Jeeps and the 500 X), on 22 Cassino (the plant in severe crisis for Alfa Romeo sales in dive). Accompanied by John Elkann, who passed from the presidency of FCA to that of Stellantis (the Agnelli family is the relative majority shareholder with 14.4% of the shares), he wanted to know the plants, speak with the workers, discuss with the trade unions.

Italian fears are strong: will Stellantis favor France, which is politically and economically stronger than our country? In the new auto giant, which also sees the presence as a shareholder of the French government but not the Italian one, will the interests of Paris prevail?

Tavares, aware of these fears, spoke of a Stellantis shield for Italy. He reiterated: "Our commitment to the merger is not to close any production plant" and "to safeguard all jobs". It wasn't so obvious. There are those who feared that the commitment to employment was above all valid for the French part of the new auto giant born from the marriage between FCA and PSA, the fourth largest group in the world with over 8 million cars produced every year.

The fear was there and is because many Italian factories are in trouble, the use of layoffs is high. Mirafiori produces the electric Fiat 500 and expects other models, Cassino works at just 15% -20% of production capacity. Giulia and the Suv Stelvio, the two models of the Biscione, are not good. Especially the Alfa Romeo Giulia suffered a slump in sales. Other models have not arrived and only now will production of the new Maserati SUV start in Cassino: Grecale, also built in the electric version.

Tavares judged Cassino's Alfa models to be of good quality but penalized by uncalibrated marketing. He announced a relaunch of Alfa Romeo and Maserati which ended up in dire straits due to the failure of the promised new models: «The very high value of these iconic brands must be recognized. We will make assessments to understand how to support their growth and profitable remedies ». The new helmsman of Stellantis did not give details on the future business plan, but made it clear that part of the 5 billion euros resulting from the synergies produced by the merger will go to investments in the Biscione and Trident brands. Another high-end model should arrive in Cassino after the Grecale.

Somehow Tavares seems to want to resume and implement Sergio Marchionne's plan for Italy: to ensure life and employment in the factories of the Peninsula by focusing on premium brands. In 2017 the then CEO of FCA announced: "From 2020 in Italy the group will only have premium productions, with the Alfa Romeo and Maserati brands". He motivated the choice: "Our way to live in globalization is in the creation of global brands such as Jeep and iconic premium brands such as Alfa and Maserati". Unfortunately it did not happen. Marchionne died suddenly in July 2018. FCA investments went above all for the Jeep and for the American factories of the group, the sales of the Biscione and the Trident (the models are built in Grugliasco) collapsed at a glance.

Tavares has already performed a miracle: it saved Peugeot and Citroen from bankruptcy by focusing on quality, innovation and competitiveness. He incorporated Opel into the PSA group, protecting employment. Now the problem of the many different brands to be reorganized and integrated, avoiding the risk of production overlaps, is being raised. There will be an initial response when it presents the first Stellantis industrial plan.

Tom Slingsby, helmsman / tactician and sailing team manager, plays a game of ping pong after a tough morning workout.

ORACLE TEAM USA is preparing to compete in the 2017 America's Cup. The race will take place in Bermuda, so the team has setup shop on the small island nation off the eastern coast of the United States in order to perform iterative design testing and practice racing its hydrofoiling catamaran yacht.

The Ayeyarwaddy (Irrawaddy or Ayeyarwady) River, Myanmar’s largest and most important waterway, remains a major transport artery. Numerous wooden boats still ply their trade up and down Kipling's “Road to Mandalay” - although the paddle steamers of his day have mostly been replaced by noisy diesel and gas motors.

Celebration

Today was the day we officially got our beach back. It has been closed off for just over 18 months while improvements were made to the sea wall and mile long (1.8km) promenade.

The official opening (the boring bit) took place at 1:30 when a plaque was uncovered. Then at 2pm, at the south end, the Army Reserves fired a big gun across the waters and the unofficial part of the celebration continued.

One rowing boat with 4 rowers and a helmsman set out to row the distance.

Two swimmers from the Wild Sea Swimmers group swam the distance.

Six runners from the Glenrothes Triathlon Club ran the distance along the beach.

Kirkcaldy and District Pipe Band led members of the public along the promenade itself. Maybe a couple of hundred hardy souls made the pilgrimage.

The weather was a typical cold, windy and cloudy December day.

Meet James T. Kirk! His doc, McCoy! Helmsman Sulu! Spock, his first ... !

Pilot boats transport local pilots to and from Cruise ships to help/supervise navigation around ports and perhaps other attractions. This particular boat named "Survey Point" carried the pilots assigned to the Hubbard Glacier waters.

Here is an excerpt written by Jared Funderburk a ranger with the National Park Service in Alaska about this particular boat: "The ships must have an Alaskan pilot aboard who is familiar with the waters when they come into these icy areas near the glacier so this boat is docked here in Yakutat all summer in order to get those pilots and us out to the ships when they come in. It’s a 65-ft ex-Navy patrol boat, and one of the coolest boats I have ever had the privilege to ride on. We take off from the harbor and meet up with the ship about 15 miles from the harbor here in Yakutat. We call the ship on the radio and they slow down to about 10 knots, open 2 big doors down on the side of the ship near the water line and throw out a rope ladder for us. Joe (boat helmsman) carefully pulls the Survey Point up against the ship as several of the passengers look over the side and we climb in one at a time. Most of the time it's pretty easy, but there are times when the swells are fairly large out in the bay so our boat might be rising up and dropping back down alongside the ship so you have to time it just right and wait out on the ladder for the boat to come back up to you, then step off at the right moment before it drops again."

How on Earth does the helmsman see where to steer?!

Much be some cameras front and rear.

A series of pics to show that I am slowly getting there with my 1/12th scale model of the 47ft Watson Class lifeboat. Still a very long way to go, and I haven't really started on the hull and running gear yet. Compare with the real thing

The Palinuro is a three-masted, iron-hulled barquentine, active as sails trainings vessel for the Italian Navy.

The Italian sail training vessel Palinuro is named after Palinurus the famous helmsman of Aeneas's ship (after the fall of Troy the defeated Trojans detoured the Mediterranean). Palinurus is seen as a prototype of an experienced navigator or guide.

History

Built at the shipyard Anciens Chantiers Dubigeon in Nantes by order of Joseph Briand (together with her sister ship Lieutenant René Guillon) and named Commandant Louis Richard, the ship was intended as barquentine. However the building costs of both ships ruined the original customer even before the ships were finished. The new owner Pècheries du Labrador from Saint-Malo finished the ships as schooner to be used for cod fishing.

In 1948 the Commandant Louis Richard was bought by shipowner Bonin from Noirmoutier-en-Île, changed to a barquentine and renamed Jean Marc Aline to be used for fishing in the Southern Indian Ocean. Eventually this activity became unprofitable, thus the ship was set for sale.

In 1951 the Italian Navy was looking for a replacement for the Cristoforo Colombo (passed to the Soviet Union), bought the vessel and renamed her Palinuro.

After a complete renovation the ship is used as training vessel for Senior Ratings.
