A crew member of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eagle stands helmsman watch as the sun sets Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011. Eagle sailed with a class of U.S. Coast Guard Academy Officer Candidates and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Officers-in-Training to Baltimore. No yachts were harmed during the taking of this photo. While Hiro was tanning nicely and even the guy on my left (name now forgotten) was colouring a little too, my face was assuming its usual distinctive purple. Not being able to tan at all has been a great regret and I blame my ancestors who, I feel, didn't have to adapt quite so well to Ireland and the Hebrides. Would it have killed them to have conquered the Mediterranean a little more often, or once even?

I don't know what's become of my two companions. Hiro, in his younger days, was a freelancer for Japan's version of Road and Track but that paid little, of course. I last heard many years ago he had joined a company and was seen, from time to time, nursing a scotch in the Long Bar at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo. I hope he hasn't forgotten his addiction to jazz. The other fellow was the housemate of a friend and worked as a service attendant for VIA Rail Canada. He has long since disappeared into the maelstrom. For most of us, life narrows a little after awhile.

The Chairman Mao Memorial Hall (毛主席纪念堂, Máo Zhǔxí Jìniàn Táng), commonly known as the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong, is the final resting place of Mao Zedong, Chairman of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China from 1943 and the Chairman of the Communist Party of China from 1945 until his death in 1976.

Although Mao had wished to be cremated, his body was embalmed and construction of a mausoleum began shortly after his death. This highly popular attraction is located in the middle of Tiananmen Square in Beijing, the capital of China. It stands on the previous site of the Gate of China, the southern (main) gate of the Imperial City during the Ming and Qing dynasties.

The remains of the Great Helmsman, as he is sometimes known, are on display for public viewing (though some claim this is a wax sculpture placed over the actual body). People line up for hundreds of yards every day to see the former chairman, many paying tribute to him with flowers that can be purchased at the entrance on the north side. There is a souvenir shop at the exit on the south side.

Tavares' shield for Alfa in a coma

OPINIONS

Rodolfo Ruocco

A shield from Stellantis to protect the former FCA Italian factories. Carlos Tavares, formerly at the helm of PSA, denies the fears of Italian workers and unions. He reassured the former FCA tricolor factories: "For Italy the good news is that Stellantis will act as a shield, as a protection for some factories, it does not represent a risk". The CEO of Stellantis, immediately after the formalization of the “equal merger” between the Peugeot group and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, wanted to personally get to know the Italian plants.

He left his Paris headquarters for a trip to Italy. On 20 January he visited Mirafiori (the cradle of Fiat), on 21 Melfi (the most advanced and productive plant with Jeeps and the 500 X), on 22 Cassino (the plant in severe crisis for Alfa Romeo sales in dive). Accompanied by John Elkann, who passed from the presidency of FCA to that of Stellantis (the Agnelli family is the relative majority shareholder with 14.4% of the shares), he wanted to know the plants, speak with the workers, discuss with the trade unions.

Italian fears are strong: will Stellantis favor France, which is politically and economically stronger than our country? In the new auto giant, which also sees the presence as a shareholder of the French government but not the Italian one, will the interests of Paris prevail?

Tavares, aware of these fears, spoke of a Stellantis shield for Italy. He reiterated: "Our commitment to the merger is not to close any production plant" and "to safeguard all jobs". It wasn't so obvious. There are those who feared that the commitment to employment was above all valid for the French part of the new auto giant born from the marriage between FCA and PSA, the fourth largest group in the world with over 8 million cars produced every year.

The fear was there and is because many Italian factories are in trouble, the use of layoffs is high. Mirafiori produces the electric Fiat 500 and expects other models, Cassino works at just 15% -20% of production capacity. Giulia and the Suv Stelvio, the two models of the Biscione, are not good. Especially the Alfa Romeo Giulia suffered a slump in sales. Other models have not arrived and only now will production of the new Maserati SUV start in Cassino: Grecale, also built in the electric version.

Tavares judged Cassino's Alfa models to be of good quality but penalized by uncalibrated marketing. He announced a relaunch of Alfa Romeo and Maserati which ended up in dire straits due to the failure of the promised new models: «The very high value of these iconic brands must be recognized. We will make assessments to understand how to support their growth and profitable remedies ». The new helmsman of Stellantis did not give details on the future business plan, but made it clear that part of the 5 billion euros resulting from the synergies produced by the merger will go to investments in the Biscione and Trident brands. Another high-end model should arrive in Cassino after the Grecale.

Somehow Tavares seems to want to resume and implement Sergio Marchionne's plan for Italy: to ensure life and employment in the factories of the Peninsula by focusing on premium brands. In 2017 the then CEO of FCA announced: "From 2020 in Italy the group will only have premium productions, with the Alfa Romeo and Maserati brands". He motivated the choice: "Our way to live in globalization is in the creation of global brands such as Jeep and iconic premium brands such as Alfa and Maserati". Unfortunately it did not happen. Marchionne died suddenly in July 2018. FCA investments went above all for the Jeep and for the American factories of the group, the sales of the Biscione and the Trident (the models are built in Grugliasco) collapsed at a glance.

Tavares has already performed a miracle: it saved Peugeot and Citroen from bankruptcy by focusing on quality, innovation and competitiveness. He incorporated Opel into the PSA group, protecting employment. Now the problem of the many different brands to be reorganized and integrated, avoiding the risk of production overlaps, is being raised. There will be an initial response when it presents the first Stellantis industrial plan.

The Purse-Seine

Our sardine fishermen work at night in the dark

of the moon; daylight or moonlight

They could not tell where to spread the net,

unable to see the phosphorescence of the

shoals of fish.

They work northward from Monterey, coasting

Santa Cruz; off New Year's Point or off

Pigeon Point

The look-out man will see some lakes of milk-color

light on the sea's night-purple; he points,

and the helmsman

Turns the dark prow, the motorboat circles the

gleaming shoal and drifts out her seine-net.

They close the circle

And purse the bottom of the net, then with great

labor haul it in.

I cannot tell you

How beautiful the scene is, and a little terrible,

then, when the crowded fish

Know they are caught, and wildly beat from one wall

to the other of their closing destiny the

phosphorescent

Water to a pool of flame, each beautiful slender body

sheeted with flame, like a live rocket

A comet's tail wake of clear yellow flame; while outside

the narrowing

Floats and cordage of the net great sea-lions come up

to watch, sighing in the dark; the vast walls

of night

Stand erect to the stars.

Lately I was looking from a night mountain-top

On a wide city, the colored splendor, galaxies of light:

how could I help but recall the seine-net

Gathering the luminous fish? I cannot tell you how

beautiful the city appeared, and a little terrible.

I thought, We have geared the machines and locked all together

into inter-dependence; we have built the great cities; now

There is no escape. We have gathered vast populations incapable

of free survival, insulated

From the strong earth, each person in himself helpless, on all

dependent. The circle is closed, and the net

Is being hauled in. They hardly feel the cords drawing, yet

they shine already. The inevitable mass-disasters

Will not come in our time nor in our children's, but we

and our children

Must watch the net draw narrower, government take all

powers--or revolution, and the new government

Take more than all, add to kept bodies kept souls--or anarchy,

the mass-disasters.

These things are Progress;

Do you marvel our verse is troubled or frowning, while it keeps

its reason? Or it lets go, lets the mood flow

In the manner of the recent young men into mere hysteria,

splintered gleams, crackled laughter. But they are

quite wrong.

There is no reason for amazement: surely one always knew

that cultures decay, and life's end is death.

Robinson Jeffers

On a J46. She's goofy-looking, but I love the pointy-headed thing happening to the one on the left. Shot with my lomo fisheye2 (film camera) then I reshot the print with my digital Sony to get an image I could play with on the computer (because I don't have a scanner). But all I did was put a frame on it and run a retro action on it. My friend Margaret Warren was the shooter -- I just did the post-production.

From 1860 to about 1940, battleships and armored capital ships were often built with a conning tower, an armored enclosure to protect command personnel in battle.

This is inside the conning tower, at the 04 level Conning Bridge, where the helmsman, together with the ship's commander and his staff, would be located.

US Battleship Iowa, a museum ship in the Port of Los Angeles, California. This battleship was launched in 1942, saw service in World War II, the Korean War and the later stages of the Cold War. She has been at this location as a museum ship since 2011. Visit of June 18, 2015.

For Greg!

German postcard by W.J. Morlins, Berlin / Ross Verlag, Berlin, no. 647/3. Photo: Karl Schenker / Cserepy Film Co.. Charlotte Schulz as Wilhelmine, Marchioness of Bayreuth, favourite sister of Frederick the Great, in the Fridericus Rex film series (Arzén von Cserépy, 1922-1923).

Charlotte Schulz (1899–1946) was a German stage and film actress and playwright. She appeared in several silent films and after a long interruption in the 1920s, she made a comeback in the cinema from 1934 till her early death in 1946.

Charlotte Elise Schultz was born in 1899 in Klein-Prägschen, in, East Prussia, now Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia. She was engaged by Victor Barnowsky at the Lessingtheater in Berlin in 1917. Later, in 1925, she appeared at the Munich Schauspielhaus in George Bernard Shaw's 'Back to Methuselah' with Therese Giehse and Emil Hess. She made her film debut at the end of WWI in Die Liebe des van Royk/The Love of Van Royk (Lupu Pick, 1918) opposite Bernd Aldor. Subsequently, she appeared in several silent films, including Steuermann Holk/Helmsman Holk (Rochus Gliese, Ludwig Wolff, 1920) with Paul Wegener, Asta Nielsen and Theodor Loos. The also appeared with Asta Nielsen in Der Absturz/Downfall (Ludwig Wolff, 1923). Another success was Fridericus Rex (Arzén von Cserépy, 1922-1923) a silent historical film series starring Otto Gebühr. The four-part series portrays the life of the eighteenth-century Prussian monarch Frederick the Great. Immensely popular, it launched the Prussian film as a major German genre during the Weimar era.

In the 1930s Charlotte Schultz worked at the Volksbühne Berlin. During her time at the Volksbühne, she also wrote the stage play 'Bitte zwei Mal läuten!' (Please, ring twice!). After a long interruption, she made a comeback in the cinema in Ein Mann will nach Deutschland (Paul Wegener, 1934). In the following decade, she appeared in a number of sound films. These included the crime film Verwehte Spuren/Covered Tracks (Veit Harlan, 1938) co-starring with Kristina Söderbaum and Frits van Dongen and the comedy Der kleine Grenzverkehr/A Salzburg Comedy (Hans Deppe, 1943), starring Willy Fritsch and Hertha Feiler. The film was an adaptation of the novel 'Georg und die Zwischenfälle' (1938) by Erich Kästner who also wrote the screenplay. As he had been blacklisted by the Nazi Party he used the pseudonym Berhold Bürger. Schulz also played a small part in the National Socialist propaganda film Jud Süß/Süss, the Jew (Veit Harlan, 1940). The film, produced by Terra Film at the behest of Joseph Goebbels, is considered one of the most antisemitic films of all time. Schulz was on the Reich Ministry for Popular Enlightenment and Propaganda's 1944 Gottbegnadeten-Liste, a 36-page list of artists considered crucial to Nazi culture. Charlotte Schulz died in 1946 in Berlin.

Memorial stained glass window by G Cooper Abbs showing St Michael Archangel and St George

Figures from the Services are represented, also a ship of the Elizabethan era suggesting the freedom enjoyed in these islands by sea power through the ages.

Correspondence with the Diocesan Registrar during the approval of the design brought up the following points

"The armour behind the knees is wrong and would not work as the leg would not bend with armour behind as well as in front.

A modern ship would be more appropriate between a modern seaman and soldier

The helmsman's great coat should be checked to ensure it is in accordance with the type used".

These recommendations were all ignored.

"This window is dedicated in honoured memory of those who gave their lives in the service of their Country and of those residents who were killed by enemy action during the war 1939 - 45

+++ Between the start of the Second World War in September 1939 and the end of 1941, civilian casualties on the British mainland far outnumbered those of servicemen fighting at the front.

Government maps made by those planning defence strategies for the UK show that although high civilian casualties were anticipated, it was thought these were most likely to occur in and around London and industrial areas further north. Devon, it was predicted, would remain a relatively safe area and was designated a safe haven for evacuees from other parts. So confident was the government of its predictions that it was not until 1942 that the first consignment of Morrison indoor air raid shelters arrived in Exeter - just 6000 for an entire city. In many rural areas, only as late as 1944 were Anderson and Morrison shelters being made available for the first time; allocation was means-tested so that only the poorest people could be supplied with a shelter free of charge. Budleigh Salterton received its first consignment of air raid shelters at the beginning of 1943 long after its ordeal by air raid had begun.

On the other hand, maps captured after the war plainly show that our enemies had other ideas. The south-west had been a favourite holiday destination among Germans prior to the outbreak of war. Through Nazi eyes, Devon was part of a vital national rail network, connecting other British naval bases to the great dockyard at Plymouth and facilitating troop movement. More importantly, they saw a place where they might inflict damage of another kind. They saw a county steeped in history with a wealth of beautiful architecture which was inhabited by a kindly, peace-loving population - might not the British people be made to feel fear to the point where they considered giving in and surrendering their heritage in order to preserve it? It seemed like a strategy worth trying so, from the very earliest days of the war, Devon experienced dozens and dozens of small raids - called "tip and run" raids locally - when perhaps a one or two planes suddenly flew in over the coast in broad daylight to drop a land mine or a high explosive bomb at random, before abruptly turning tail and heading away again.
