Early morning walk along the quays in Marmarais and I found this classic wheel attached to a boat. I also liked the helmsman's plastic chair, and complete lack of screens. Nice and simple.

One of 24 Egyptian model boats (six are on display in the museum) found in the tomb of the royal chief steward Meketre. It is from ca. 1981–1975 B.C. (almost 4,000 years old).

 

As the twelve oarsmen rest their oars, a lookout in the bow holds a weighted line used to determine the depth of the river.

 

At the stern, the helmsman controls the rudder.

The knick knack I made in High school in 1979. It was made from a piece of teak wood. It was sanded with fine sandpaper and 00 Steel wool then polished heavily with a buffing wheel and bee's wax. No Stain or polyurethane was used. The Bar top I made in 2001. It was made from an old piece of 2x12 pine. It was sanded with an Oscillating sander, Stained with 2 coats of Minwax Red Mahogany stain, then topped with 2 coats of Minwax High Gloss Helmsman Polyurethane which was lightly sanded between the 2 coats. I know this just amazes you all the same way it did me. NOT!

A shield from Stellantis to protect the former FCA Italian factories. Carlos Tavares, formerly at the helm of PSA, denies the fears of Italian workers and unions. He reassured the former FCA tricolor factories: "For Italy the good news is that Stellantis will act as a shield, as a protection for some factories, it does not represent a risk". The CEO of Stellantis, immediately after the formalization of the “equal merger” between the Peugeot group and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, wanted to personally get to know the Italian plants.

He left his Paris headquarters for a trip to Italy. On 20 January he visited Mirafiori (the cradle of Fiat), on 21 Melfi (the most advanced and productive plant with Jeeps and the 500 X), on 22 Cassino (the plant in severe crisis for Alfa Romeo sales in dive). Accompanied by John Elkann, who passed from the presidency of FCA to that of Stellantis (the Agnelli family is the relative majority shareholder with 14.4% of the shares), he wanted to know the plants, speak with the workers, discuss with the trade unions.

Italian fears are strong: will Stellantis favor France, which is politically and economically stronger than our country? In the new auto giant, which also sees the presence as a shareholder of the French government but not the Italian one, will the interests of Paris prevail?

Tavares, aware of these fears, spoke of a Stellantis shield for Italy. He reiterated: "Our commitment to the merger is not to close any production plant" and "to safeguard all jobs". It wasn't so obvious. There are those who feared that the commitment to employment was above all valid for the French part of the new auto giant born from the marriage between FCA and PSA, the fourth largest group in the world with over 8 million cars produced every year.

The fear was there and is because many Italian factories are in trouble, the use of layoffs is high. Mirafiori produces the electric Fiat 500 and expects other models, Cassino works at just 15% -20% of production capacity. Giulia and the Suv Stelvio, the two models of the Biscione, are not good. Especially the Alfa Romeo Giulia suffered a slump in sales. Other models have not arrived and only now will production of the new Maserati SUV start in Cassino: Grecale, also built in the electric version.

Tavares judged Cassino's Alfa models to be of good quality but penalized by uncalibrated marketing. He announced a relaunch of Alfa Romeo and Maserati which ended up in dire straits due to the failure of the promised new models: «The very high value of these iconic brands must be recognized. We will make assessments to understand how to support their growth and profitable remedies ». The new helmsman of Stellantis did not give details on the future business plan, but made it clear that part of the 5 billion euros resulting from the synergies produced by the merger will go to investments in the Biscione and Trident brands. Another high-end model should arrive in Cassino after the Grecale.

Somehow Tavares seems to want to resume and implement Sergio Marchionne's plan for Italy: to ensure life and employment in the factories of the Peninsula by focusing on premium brands. In 2017 the then CEO of FCA announced: "From 2020 in Italy the group will only have premium productions, with the Alfa Romeo and Maserati brands". He motivated the choice: "Our way to live in globalization is in the creation of global brands such as Jeep and iconic premium brands such as Alfa and Maserati". Unfortunately it did not happen. Marchionne died suddenly in July 2018. FCA investments went above all for the Jeep and for the American factories of the group, the sales of the Biscione and the Trident (the models are built in Grugliasco) collapsed at a glance.

Tavares has already performed a miracle: it saved Peugeot and Citroen from bankruptcy by focusing on quality, innovation and competitiveness. He incorporated Opel into the PSA group, protecting employment. Now the problem of the many different brands to be reorganized and integrated, avoiding the risk of production overlaps, is being raised. There will be an initial response when it presents the first Stellantis industrial plan.

The Combat Support Boat performs tasks normally carried out by bigger vessels, but has the advantage of being air transportable and easily deployed anywhere in the world.

 

It is in service with the British Army and international armed forces. Its agile design allows it to fulfill a variety of roles, such as bridge building, high speed landing, long range transits, passenger ferry and equipment mobilisation.

 

The low draft hull form, high payload carrying capability and machinery arrangement make it the most versatile workboat in its class.

 

It is fitted with an elevated bridge for improved visibility and has several modular cabin and deck fit-out options to suit operators’ requirements. Options range from a basic cabin for helmsman and crew, to a comprehensive fit-out including galley, toilet, shower, dayroom and sleeping accommodation with heating and air conditioning.

As I´ve written before, my grandfather were in the navy as a helmsman on submarines. He also instructed other sailors how to ascend from a submarine if it had been sunked.

Vladimir Bobri (Bobritsky) was an illustrator, author, composer, educator and guitar historian. Celebrated for his prolific and innovative graphic design work in New York since the mid-1920s, Bobri was also a founder of the New York Society of The Classic Guitar in 1936, and served as editor and art director of its magazine, Guitar Review, for nearly 40 years.

 

Bobritsky studied at the rigorous Kharkiv Imperial Art School. By 1915 he had begun designing sets for the Great Dramatic Theatre of Kharkiv, introducing the methods of theatrical designer Gordon Craig. Swept up in the Russian Revolution, Bobritsky fought on various sides in the civil war before managing to escape in 1917.

 

"After the Revolution came a long and enforced period of travel and a kind of montage of activity," wrote Bobritsky's friend and fellow artist Saul Yalkert in a biographical sketch printed in Forty Illustrators and How They Work (1946).

 

As a refugee he traveled on a handmade passport, eight closely printed pages in Polish, so skillfully wrought that it left no doubt as to his talent and feeling for calligraphy, since it successfully passed the expert examination of the English, French, Italian and Greek consular authorities. ... In the mountainous, peninsular Crimea he worked as a wine presser for the Tartar fruit and wine growers. Later he came in contact with Russian, Hungarian and Spanish gypsies, studied their lore, the peculiarities of the different tribes. Having met with a band of gypsies in the Crimea he earned his way as a guitar player in their chorus.

 

Bobritsky painted icons in the Greek islands, played the piano in a nickelodeon in Pera, painted signs in Constantinople (now Istanbul), discovered an important Byzantine mural in an abandoned Turkish mosque, and earned his passage to America by designing sets and costumes for the Russian ballet in Constantinople.

 

"Through all those wanderings his knapsack always had a watercolor box, a drawing pad," Yalkert wrote. "The record was kept with constant sketching of people, stories, folklore, folk music and crafts."

 

Bobritsky emigrated to the United States in 1921.

 

In his artist profile in Forty Illustrators and How They Work, Ernest W. Watson reports that Bobritsky began operating his own textile printing establishment soon after arriving in New York. "In 1925 he was called in by the art director of Wanamaker's, in an experiment with modern advertising," Watson wrote. "His radically different newspaper layouts were more than the establishment could stomach and both artist and art director were dismissed. But Saks Fifth Avenue saw, admired and beckoned." Saks offered Bobri the position of art director.

 

"His newspaper and magazine layouts represented a fresh departure," wrote Walt Reed, scholar and historian of illustration art. "Bobri soon found himself with enough clients to embark on a freelance career, largely for advertising illustrations, and strongly influenced by his background of classical training and theatrical designing."

 

The first of Bobritsky's seven covers for The New Yorker magazine was dated February 6, 1926. By the 1930s, Bobritsky — or Bobri, as he signed his name with greater frequency — had become a leading illustrator in the burgeoning world of advertising. His accounts included Hanes, Koret and Avon; his work was prominent in the Annual of Advertising Art. He also gained renown as an illustrator of children's books.

 

Bobri frequently contributed to Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, McCall's and many other magazines. As well as appearing in the March 1938 issue of The American Magazine, Bobri's title illustration for Too Many Cooks, a Nero Wolfe mystery by Rex Stout, adorns a recipe box that is one of the most sought-after pieces of Stoutiana.

 

Bobri continued his study of the guitar. In 1936, he and a small group began meeting informally, forming the first major classical guitar society in New York City, the New York Society of the Classic Guitar.

 

"The Society's beginnings were somewhat modest, but Bobri, through a seemingly small act, would ensure the Society's preeminence for decades to come," wrote Lester S. Long in NYlon Review, the official newsletter of the New York City Classical Guitar Society:

An illustrator by trade, Bobri presented Andrés Segovia with an offer to paint his portrait. Segovia accepted. In the process the pair began a decades-long friendship and Segovia accepted the position of honorary president of the Society. Already a star in Europe and starting his career in the United States, Segovia would be no mere figurehead; instead, he would influence the artistic direction of the Society for nearly 50 years as chairman of the advisory committee.

 

In 1946, the society began publishing The Guitar Review. Bobri served as editor and art director of the quarterly magazine until 1985.

 

As well as designing a number of album covers for Segovia recordings, Bobri wrote and illustrated the influential book, The Segovia Technique (1972).

 

In 1972, Bobri was decorated with the Cross of Isabel la Catolica with the rank of Knight-Commander, recognizing his lifelong achievements as a designer, painter, art director, composer and writer, and his use of those talents to increase awareness of Spanish culture. The award was presented by the consul general of Spain in New York, at a ceremony attended by Spanish dignitaries including Andrés Segovia.

 

On November 3, 1986, Vladimir Bobri lost his life in a house fire, one that consumed the house he designed, built and lived in with his second wife, Margaret Garcia, for nearly 50 years, together with his art, correspondence and collection of guitars. Introducing a memorial tribute in its Winter 1987 issue, The Guitar Review wrote, "In the midst of our inability to accept so great a loss, we are seduced by a possible validity in the old Viking philosophy: the belief that the helmsman and his pyre are sent resurrected into the unknown, to sail the sea of eternity. May we hope it's true that our dear friend Bobri has indeed embarked on that mythical journey, still in possession of all he took with him."

On Saltwick Bay near Whitby lies a wreck. Many people stand and stare at this. Many a tourist will ask the name of the stricken vessel? Thats easy - its a wrecked trawler named the Admiral Von Tromp which foundered In October 1976. The curious will then ask how it got wrecked - thats more difficult to answer - it is still a mystery which will never be fully solved. The one man who could have solved the riddle died in the water that day.

    

At 1am the Skipper Frankie Taal set off from Scarborough Harbour. Mr Walter Sheader,(10 Longwestgate) Pierman on the West Pier helped cast them off. He stated that everything seemed normal and that the crew were definitely not drunk(if they had been the whole thing may have been easier to explain). Frankie Taal set a course for the Barnacle Bank fishing grounds - 45 miles NNE of Scarborough. He then had a cup of coffee then came back to check again on John Addison. Everything seemed normal and he went to bed leaving Addison on the wheel - he was an experienced man on the wheel.

    

Then skipper Frankie Taal was woken as the vessel was bumping and heeling. Crew member John Marton thought the boat had been run down - it simply didn't enter his mind that the boat could have gone on the rocks. The boat was heeling over off Black Nab on Saltwick Bay. The skipper was incredulous and asked Addison "What the hell are you doing!". He simply looked back in stunned silence.

    

How exactly did a modern boat with all the navigational aids run aground on Saltwick Bay. The weather wasn't bad and they had enough fuel? It was foggy but that shouldn't be a problem as they were not heading anywhere near the coastline. Captain Abbey from the coastguard even charted the boats course and when it sank it was heading due west. That was 90 degrees off course. The boat had been heading straight towards some of the worst rocks on the coast!

    

Strangest of all was the testimony of a senior nautical surveyor at the inquest. He stated that the boat if left to its devices would not have gone onto the rocks. It really was driven onto the rocks by a deliberate act.

    

Frankie Taal made valiant attempts to save the boat. They all put their Lifejackets on and then he tried to anchor the boat. Then the vessel turned broadside and it then started to fill with water. He had already sent out a mayday - having to get John Addison out of the way - who was still looking stunned and was powerless to act. The boat was now sinking in thick fog, with a heavy swell breaking on the stern.

    

The rescue proved very problematic. The boat was heeling over. Frankie Taal ordered the crew to hang onto the starboard side but the seas were too heavy. They instead went back into the wheelhouse. They stayed here for an hour. The wheelhouse slowly filled with water and in the end their heads were banging on the ceiling. In the end they had to leave through an open window - Skipper Taal was last out. Addison was already dead at this stage - drowned in the wheelhouse.

    

The rescue showed how difficult it is to save lives even in the modern age. The Whitby Lifeboat tried again and again to get near and failed. The Coxswain of the Lifeboat, Robert William Allen, even spoke to the skipper - who said that everyone was alive. The boat tried 7 times to get close. At one point the vessels even touched. Yet heavy seas and fog hampered the rescue. They could even have snatched the crew yet at that moment they were still imprisoned in the wheelhouse. Rocket lines were thrown by the Coastguard but again this failed because the crew were trapped inside the wheelhouse.

    

When they left the wheelhouse then problems were bound to occur. George Eves was on top of the wheelhouse yet a huge wave knocked him off. That was the last the skipper saw of him. He died drowned. Skipper, Taal was washed overboard and was eventually saved by the inshore Lifeboat. He drew their attention with his whistle on his Lifejacket. The Coastguard had thrown him a line but he did not have the strength to catch it. The other survivors were washed ashore.

    

It was a tragic loss with two men dead. Quite why it happened will never be explained - Addison died in the water. He drowned and pathology reports showed no signs of alcohol. He spoke to Alan Marton just after the accident happened just saying Oh Alan!" in a quiet apologetic voice. He seemed stunned and unable to act. Skipper Taal had to remove him from the wheel in order to try to rescue the boat.

    

The crew onboard the Admiral Von Tromp were:

- Frankie Taal, 35 Princess Street, who had 23 years at sea. Saved by inshore Lifeboat.

- Alan Marton, mate, 22 Longwestgate. Survived.

- Mr Anthony Nicholson, engineer, 6 Avenua Road.

- Mr George Edward Eves, East Mount Flats, Scarborough,fish hand. Who drowned

- Mr John 'Scotch Jack' Addison, Spreight Lane Steps, Drowned in the wheelhouse. His body was found on 25th October In Runswick Bay.

    

A Silver Medal was awarded to RNLI Lifeboat Coxswain Robert Allen. He had skillfully dropped anchor and tried to drift towards the trawler. A Bronze Medal to the Helmsman of the inshore Lifeboat, Richard Robinson, for taking Frankie Taal off Black Nab.

The commanding officer (the captain) usually cons (controls) this ship from a stately leather chair surrounded by computer screens. The commanding officer directs the helmsman, who actually steers the carrier, the lee helmsman, who directs the engine room to control the speed of the ship, the Quartermaster of the Watch, who keeps track of navigation information, and a number of lookouts and support personnel. When the commanding officer is not on the bridge, he puts an Officer of the Deck in charge of operations.
