"Puridarbud: Fisherman's hut - This fisherman's hut was built in the memory of Thuridur Einarsdottir, the female boat foreman or helmsman of Gata in Stokkseyri. It was inaugurated in June 26 of 1949 and was rebuilt in 2001. Thuridur was born in 1777. She started going to sea with her father as early as 11 years old and was a perfectly valid fisherman at age 17, Thuridur was a fisherman for more than 50 years, there of for 34 years from Stokkseyri. She was a foreman on a boat for 25 years, from Stokkseyri in the winter fishing seasons of 1815-1830, and from the nearby Thorlakshofn between 1830-1840. No other examples of such a career are known for a woman in Iceland. Thuridur was considered a good foreman, careful and insightful in fishing. Because of her position, Thuridur dressed as a man, for which she needed a special permit from the district sheriff. She died at Eyrarbakki in 18632, at age 86. Fishing from Stokkseyri: Fishing had its heydays in Stokkseyri from 1787 to 1833, and from 1858 and beyond 1900. Around 1900,50-60 rowing boats were located at Stokkseyri. After the shift of the decade, motor boats appeared and rowing boats reduced in numbers. At its peak, hundreds of winter season fishermen from South-Iceland came to Stokkseyri. Cotages similar to Thuridarbud had to be built for them. In Stokkseyri, fishermen's huts counted dozens in the latter half of the 19th century. For a good meal: The winter fishing season was from Candlemas on February 2 to May 11 every year. The food the fishermen brought with them for the season was decided beforehand. Each fisherman should have with him three quarts (15 kilos or 30 pounds) of butter, and precooked meat of a yearling ram prepared as a pemmicam. This was called "mata". Furthermore, smoked meat of another yearling ram, 30 kilos of rye meal, and 25 kilos of dried fish. In addition to that, 1 kilo of coffee, 1 kilo of barley sugar and half a kilo of chicory. The wreck site of the PS Albion. In 1840 she was heading into Jack Sound when it is said that the helmsman altered course to avoid a rowing boat, striking Crab Rock in the process. The captain ordered the vessel turned to shore and made for the beach. All on board were saved as was the cargo. Alas the vessel was not so lucky and was a total loss. She eventualy broke up and all that's left today is this shaft, believed to be part of her steam engine. Not having a name the beach was thereafter known as Albion Sands. In the background is the gap between the mainland and Gateholm the other side of which is Marloes Sands, scene that day of filming for the up coming movie "Snow White and the Huntsman" Thanks toPeter (pds35) for the initial info and directions.

The Chairman Mao Memorial Hall (毛主席纪念堂, Máo Zhǔxí Jìniàn Táng), commonly known as the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong, is the final resting place of Mao Zedong, Chairman of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China from 1943 and the Chairman of the Communist Party of China from 1945 until his death in 1976.
Although Mao had wished to be cremated, his body was embalmed and construction of a mausoleum began shortly after his death. This highly popular attraction is located in the middle of Tiananmen Square in Beijing, the capital of China. It stands on the previous site of the Gate of China, the southern (main) gate of the Imperial City during the Ming and Qing dynasties.
The remains of the Great Helmsman, as he is sometimes known, are on display for public viewing (though some claim this is a wax sculpture placed over the actual body). People line up for hundreds of yards every day to see the former chairman, many paying tribute to him with flowers that can be purchased at the entrance on the north side. There is a souvenir shop at the exit on the south side.
Tavares' shield for Alfa in a coma

A shield from Stellantis to protect the former FCA Italian factories. Carlos Tavares, formerly at the helm of PSA, denies the fears of Italian workers and unions. He reassured the former FCA tricolor factories: "For Italy the good news is that Stellantis will act as a shield, as a protection for some factories, it does not represent a risk". The CEO of Stellantis, immediately after the formalization of the “equal merger” between the Peugeot group and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, wanted to personally get to know the Italian plants.
He left his Paris headquarters for a trip to Italy. On 20 January he visited Mirafiori (the cradle of Fiat), on 21 Melfi (the most advanced and productive plant with Jeeps and the 500 X), on 22 Cassino (the plant in severe crisis for Alfa Romeo sales in dive). Accompanied by John Elkann, who passed from the presidency of FCA to that of Stellantis (the Agnelli family is the relative majority shareholder with 14.4% of the shares), he wanted to know the plants, speak with the workers, discuss with the trade unions.
Italian fears are strong: will Stellantis favor France, which is politically and economically stronger than our country? In the new auto giant, which also sees the presence as a shareholder of the French government but not the Italian one, will the interests of Paris prevail?
Tavares, aware of these fears, spoke of a Stellantis shield for Italy. He reiterated: "Our commitment to the merger is not to close any production plant" and "to safeguard all jobs". It wasn't so obvious. There are those who feared that the commitment to employment was above all valid for the French part of the new auto giant born from the marriage between FCA and PSA, the fourth largest group in the world with over 8 million cars produced every year.
The fear was there and is because many Italian factories are in trouble, the use of layoffs is high. Mirafiori produces the electric Fiat 500 and expects other models, Cassino works at just 15% -20% of production capacity. Giulia and the Suv Stelvio, the two models of the Biscione, are not good. Especially the Alfa Romeo Giulia suffered a slump in sales. Other models have not arrived and only now will production of the new Maserati SUV start in Cassino: Grecale, also built in the electric version.
Tavares judged Cassino's Alfa models to be of good quality but penalized by uncalibrated marketing. He announced a relaunch of Alfa Romeo and Maserati which ended up in dire straits due to the failure of the promised new models: «The very high value of these iconic brands must be recognized. We will make assessments to understand how to support their growth and profitable remedies ». The new helmsman of Stellantis did not give details on the future business plan, but made it clear that part of the 5 billion euros resulting from the synergies produced by the merger will go to investments in the Biscione and Trident brands. Another high-end model should arrive in Cassino after the Grecale.
Somehow Tavares seems to want to resume and implement Sergio Marchionne's plan for Italy: to ensure life and employment in the factories of the Peninsula by focusing on premium brands. In 2017 the then CEO of FCA announced: "From 2020 in Italy the group will only have premium productions, with the Alfa Romeo and Maserati brands". He motivated the choice: "Our way to live in globalization is in the creation of global brands such as Jeep and iconic premium brands such as Alfa and Maserati". Unfortunately it did not happen. Marchionne died suddenly in July 2018. FCA investments went above all for the Jeep and for the American factories of the group, the sales of the Biscione and the Trident (the models are built in Grugliasco) collapsed at a glance.
Tavares has already performed a miracle: it saved Peugeot and Citroen from bankruptcy by focusing on quality, innovation and competitiveness. He incorporated Opel into the PSA group, protecting employment. Now the problem of the many different brands to be reorganized and integrated, avoiding the risk of production overlaps, is being raised. There will be an initial response when it presents the first Stellantis industrial plan.
If the helmsman loses the ability to steer from the bridge, this is where the aft steering watch will control the rudder.

The present octagonal concrete tower was built in 1918 and stands 22 feet tall. It is an active lighthouse with a white flash signal every 5 seconds. This is the third lighthouse to service the town of Port Daniel. The first a wooden structure stood at the end of the town pier. In 1906, It was enlarged and moved to the present site at the end of West Point, but was destroyed by fire.
The town of Port Daniel is said to have gotten it's name from Jaques Cartier when sailing off the coast in a fierce storm he instructed his helmsman Charles Daniel to turn "Port Daniel" into the protected haven of the bay.

Egyptain, Middle Kingdom, 11th-12th dynasty, 2040-1783 B.C.
Painted wood.
Twelve oarsmen, a helmsman, and a pilot, or lookout, ferry their passenger, the tomb-owner. Such models were associated with religious beliefs, as they symbolized the journey of the deceased to Abydos, the traditional burial place of Osiris, lord of the afterworld. The tomb-owner is clothed with a shroud and is shown with a blue berd. This boat was placed in the tomb to assist the deceased in navigating the Nile of the underworld. Typically, models of passenger ships found in Middle Kingdom tombs occur in pairs. One to travel south, equipped with a sail, as the wind in Egypt blows constantly from the north to south, and the other (as this model) propelled by rowers aided by the Nile's current, to travel north.
Imagine - low tides, strong waves and swell and Looe RNLI's Atlantic 75 needs to return to shore as quickly as possible with any casualties. Usually the Atlantic 75 reverses onto her Drive Off Drive On (DODO) trailer so she can launch quickly when next called out. For a quick return to shore a net is rigged on the DOD trailer to capture the lifeboat and bring her to a halt quickly. Hats off to the helmsman who has to keep the engines running and enter the trailer at speed. Just imagine having to do this in a high swell or surf, you would have to judge it just right as visibility would be non existent!

Celebration
Today was the day we officially got our beach back. It has been closed off for just over 18 months while improvements were made to the sea wall and mile long (1.8km) promenade.
The official opening (the boring bit) took place at 1:30 when a plaque was uncovered. Then at 2pm, at the south end, the Army Reserves fired a big gun across the waters and the unofficial part of the celebration continued.
One rowing boat with 4 rowers and a helmsman set out to row the distance.
Two swimmers from the Wild Sea Swimmers group swam the distance.
Six runners from the Glenrothes Triathlon Club ran the distance along the beach.
Kirkcaldy and District Pipe Band led members of the public along the promenade itself. Maybe a couple of hundred hardy souls made the pilgrimage.
The weather was a typical cold, windy and cloudy December day.

The Captain the 'Maid of Poole' trip boat, part of the Brownsea Island ferries fleet.
On the way out to the island we had no commentary, and the laddish helmsman muttered incomprensibly when he did the 'elf n safety' announcement.
On the way back, however, which is a lovely 40 minute jaunt round the back of the harbour and round the 5 islands, this man gave us a most fascinating and informative talk from the wheelhouse tannoy.
It always amazes me how folk who do this daily for their living manage to make it fresh, and never sound bored.
We thanked him as we crossed the gangplank and I asked for the pic. He said 'yes' but I think he felt 'Nooooo!'

As part of Preston Guild City Games 2014 the Dragon Boat Championship 2014
Each boat consists of 15 team members, including a drum-beater to keep the team in rhythm, and a professional helmsman (provided) to keep direction.

This is from one of my favorite books, The Unquiet Grave by Cyril Connelly using the nom de plume of Palinurus.
From Wikipedia:
Palinurus, in Roman mythology, is the helmsman of a ship of the Trojan hero Aeneas, whose descendants would one day found the city of Rome. As the price for the safe passage of Aeneas and his people from Sicily to Italy, Palinurus loses his life, one on behalf of many ('unum pro multis dabitur caput' according to Vergil's "Neptune" (Aeneid 5.815). Somnus causes Palinurus to fall asleep and fall overboard. (Palinurus' own version at Aeneid 6.349 does not blame the god.) He is then stranded on the coast of Lucania, in southern Italy, where he is killed by a native tribe, the Lucani. When Aeneas and the Sibyl meet Palinurus in the Underworld, the Sibyl promises that the local people will be moved by signs to provide the helmsman's body with a proper burial, at what is now Cape Palinuro.
Palinurus is mentioned in Utopia by Sir Thomas More as a type of careless traveller. "'Then you're not quite right,' he replied, 'for his sailing has not been like that of Palinurus, but more that of Ulysses, or rather of Plato. This man, who is named Raphael.'" This is unfair, as Palinurus conscientiously refused to let the disguised Somnus take the tiller, claiming that although the sea was calm, he could not risk going off duty. Somnus was forced to use magic to make Palinurus sleep.
Palinurus was the pseudonym chosen by Cyril Connolly for his book The Unquiet Grave: A Word Cycle, and used to refer disparagingly to him by Alaric Jacob in Scenes from a Bourgeois Life.
