Helms Bakeries were started by Paul Helms in 1931. In those days most food items were delivery. Just like the milk man, the Helms bakery "Helmsman" drove his Divco Coach to his assigned area and delivered bread to the households. If you needed some items you would place a blue sign with an large "H" in the window. The Helmsman would notice it and make a delivery. He would also sound the distinctive two tone horn to let customers know he was on their street. Kids would flag down the bakery trucks as they traveled through the neighborhood. The coaches were stocked with freshly baked donuts and pastries in addition to the warm breads.
Helms Bakery was also contracted to provide bread to the Summer Olympics athletes in 1932 Los Angeles and 1936 Berlin. Helms bread was also carried on NASA's Apollo 11 in 1969 shortly before the factory closed.
In this photo, the LAFD obtained permission from Helms Bakeries to carry the fire safety posters on their delivery trucks during fire prevention week.

Teignmouth Harbour Commission
The Harbour Commission is a Trust Port created by Statute.
The principal Order is the Teignmouth Harbour Order 1924
as amended by the Teignmouth Harbour Revision Order 2003
1830 - The first lifeboat placed at Wells was of the Greathead North Country type. It came from Cromer when a new boat was received there and was provided by the Norfolk Shipwreck Association. This boat served at Wells until 1852.
1869 - The RNLI took over operation of the lifeboat in Wells. A Lifeboat house was constructed at the west end of the quay at a cost of £300.
1880 - On 29th. October the lifeboat Eliza Adams capsized when returning to shore after a service launch. Eleven out of her crew of 13 were drowned, leaving 10 widows and 27 children. The Institution voted £1,000 towards a fund raised locally for the dependants and paid the funeral expenses of the men.
1895 - New Lifeboat house and slipway constructed on Wells beach.
1896 - The RNLI sells the original lifeboat house to Wells Urban District Council for £75. The building is one of the few examples of this distinctive RNLI design to survive without major alterations, it is now the Wells Harbour Office.
1936 - Wells became the last station in Britain to use horses to launch a lifeboat. The station gets its first motor lifeboat, the Surf-class Royal Silver Jubilee 1910-1935, and launching tractor.
1942 - Thanks of the Institution inscribed on Vellum awarded to Coxswain T. Neilsen for his gallantry in going aboard a crashed Lancaster bomber on 14th. July to search for survivors. One airman was rescued but there was no sign of any other member of the crew. The coxswain hoisted himself onto the wing and walked along the fuselage. Its top had been blown away and he climbed inside. At any moment the aircraft might have sank, trapped the coxswain inside.
1946 - On the night of 5th. January, seven German prisoners of war stole a lorry and drove to the lifeboat house, broke open a window and tried to start the engine of the lifeboat in an attempt to escape. When this failed the men were arrested when they returned to the lorry.
1955 - Thanks of the Institution inscribed on Vellum awarded to Coxswain W. Cox for the rescue of five of the crew from the SS Zor of Instanbul on 18th. May. The wind was northerly, strong to gale with squalls of sleet and hail. The Zor was loaded with timber and as each successive sea hit her the baulks of wood fell from her deck into the sea.
1962 - US Air Force entertained the crew of Wells Lifeboat to a dinner in gratitude for the part played in the search for American airmen. A plaque was also presented and fixed in the boathouse.
1963 - Bronze medal awarded to Second Coxswain F. Taylor for the rescue of two people from the cabin cruiser Seamu on 18/19th. May in a strong west-north westerly breeze and rough sea. D-Class lifeboat sent to station in June.
1964 - Thanks of the Institution inscribed on Vellum awarded to Coxswain D. J. Cox for the determination and courage he displayed in attempting to carry out a service to the yacht Kiskadee on 29/30th. August. The yacht was aground on a sandbank about half a mile west of Blakeney Point, lying beam on to a confused sea that was washing over her. There was heavy breaking surf and it was a very dark night and, although four attempts were made, the lifeboat was unable to reach the yacht and she stood by while a shore boat took the Kiskadee in tow. On 28 December the lifeboat was launched to stand by the oil rig Sea Gem and was on service for 21 hours in very severe weather conditions. There was a northerly wind of gale force, a very heavy swell and sleet and rain were falling intermittently during the whole service, which was recognised by the Committee of Management by the granting of additional monetary awards to the coxswain and crew.
1969 - Century Vellum awarded to station.
1978 - The inshore lifeboat shed was destroyed by gales which battered the east coast during January. A new shed was built as an extension of the main boathouse to house the ILB.
1979 - Silver medal awarded to Coxswain David Cox in recognition of his courage, determination and seamanship when the lifeboat under his command stood by the Rumanian cargo vessel Savinesti which had broken down and lost both her anchors north of the South Race Buoy in an east-north-easterly hurricane, extremely poor visibility due to heavy snow, sub-zero temperatures and a very rough sea on 15th.February
1981 - Bronze medal awarded to Coxswain David Cox in recognition of the courage determination and seamanship displayed by him when the lifeboat under his command rescued the crew of four of the motor fishing vessel Sarah-K which was in difficulties with her engine room flooded off Woolpack Buoy in a strong north westerly gale with rough short seas on 20th. November.
1984 - A new crewroom was built above the inshore lifeboat, along with access stairs which also provided easier boarding to the all-weather lifeboat.
1990 - The new Mersey-class lifeboat Doris M. Mann of Ampthill arrived on station. The boathouse was extensively modified to accommodate the larger vessel.
1996 - Framed letter of appreciation signed by the Chairman of the Institution was awarded to the all-weather lifeboat crew and shore helpers for the service to the fishing vessel Remus with a crew of two which was reported in difficulties on the west bar. The lifeboat proceeded in rough seas and Force 7/8 winds. An attempt to float a line to Remus was unsuccessful. The coxswain decided to drop anchor and called for the station tractor to be brought to the waters edge where Remus had now grounded. A rocket line was fired and hauled in by the shore crew. Illuminated by a helicopter, two of the shore crew boarded the Remus and secured a tow. The boat was taken in tow and to the west to a gap through the west bar, which was safely negotiated into deeper waters. This service was carried out in darkness, shallow waters and near gale force winds on 17th. November.
1996 - D-512 Jane Ann II replaced the original Jane Ann inshore lifeboat.
2000 - Thanks of the Institution on Vellum were awarded to Coxswain Allen Frary and Second Coxswain and ILB helmsman Bob Smith and Vellum Service Certificates were awarded to the lifeboat crew for a service to the 17 ft. yacht Candy which was in danger struggling to enter the harbour in shallow, rough water. The ILB was on scene first and escorted the yacht through rough and confused seas to somewhat calmer water. Two children were taken off the yacht onto the all-weather lifeboat and two crewmen put aboard to help secure a tow. While the lifeboat towed the yacht in, mostly beam-on in force 5-6 winds with considerable rolling and water coming on board, the ILB stood by in growing darkness at the harbour entrance. A big sea swept over the yacht just inside the harbour entrance knocking her skipper overboard but the ILB was swiftly able to recover him. Tractor driver Phil Eaglen had initially spotted Candy in trouble and received a letter of appreciation from the RNLI's operations director.
2002 - In a challenging service, the all-weather lifeboat attended in the 97 ft. Dutch sailing vessel Albatros, which had dragged her anchors in shallow, rough waters to the east of the harbour entrance while returning from a charter trip with 11 persons on-board. In worsening squally force 6 and 7 conditions, she was unable to retrieve her anchors or make headway and it took repeated attempts for the lifeboat to finally establish a tow and bring the vessel safely into harbour.
2006 - A new IB1 D-class inshore lifeboat, D-661 Jane Ann III, arrived on station.
2016 - A new IB1 D-class inshore lifeboat, D-797 Peter Wilcox, arrived on station.
2019 - The station celebrated 150 years as an RNLI lifeboat station with four generations of lifeboats on show at the quay. A 150th. anniversary vellum was presented to the station by RNLI Chief Executive Mark Dowie.
2022 - A new boathouse adjacent to the beach bank was completed to house the new Shannon-class all-weather lifeboat Duke of Edinburgh. The boat itself arrived in Wells by sea in October.
2023 - After a period of crew training, the Duke of Edinburgh went into service in February replacing the Doris M. Mann of Ampthil.
Medal Record.
Three medals have been awarded to the station, one Silver and two Bronze.

"The helmsman of an airship is pretty close to the most important person on board. That person needs focus, concentration, intestinal fortitude and a sharp mind. As such, this critical position needs all the help they can get! See pirates coming from miles away, know when the weather is turning long before the horizon turns red, analyze in minute detail your approach angle -- with THESE, Dr. Harrison's Optical Analysis Apparatus!
There is simply NO better way to fly then with all the information you need, instantly available to you As It Happens. Do Not find yourself caught out in a Noreaster or skirting the Bermuda Triangle simply because your heading was off by two degrees.
Precision! Bravery! Quick-Wittedness! And most of all, Information!"
These Steampunk airship goggles are constructed in the studios of Geahk Burchill by hand in Portland Oregon. This durable, well made prop will be the talk of the SteamBall especially when accompanied by an Arcturous Projector or Aether Effsmlizer.
Made from brass, copper, steel and bronze the wood and metal components have that verisimilitude that sells them as the real thing! The Leather sections are made from a durable and lightweight, comfortable Polyethylene semi-rigid foam that reduce the weight and increase the wear-ability. These goggles are Vegan! Happy Sky-Piloting!
Ah! what pleasant visions haunt me
As I gaze upon the sea!
All the old romantic legends,
All my dreams, come back to me.
Sails of silk and ropes of sandal,
Such as gleam in ancient lore;
And the singing of the sailors,
And the answer from the shore!
Most of all, the Spanish ballad
Haunts me oft, and tarries long,
Of the noble Count Arnaldos
And the sailor's mystic song.
Like the long waves on a sea-beach,
Where the sand as silver shines,
With a soft, monotonous cadence,
Flow its unrhymed lyric lines:—
Telling how the Count Arnaldos,
With his hawk upon his hand,
Saw a fair and stately galley,
Steering onward to the land;—
How he heard the ancient helmsman
Chant a song so wild and clear,
That the sailing sea-bird slowly
Poised upon the mast to hear,
Till his soul was full of longing,
And he cried, with impulse strong,—
“Helmsman! for the love of heaven,
Teach me, too, that wondrous song!”
“Wouldst thou,”—so the helmsman answered,
“Learn the secret of the sea?
Only those who brave its dangers
Comprehend its mystery!”
In each sail that skims the horizon,
In each landward-blowing breeze,
I behold that stately galley,
Hear those mournful melodies;
Till my soul is full of longing
For the secret of the sea,
And the heart of the great ocean
Sends a thrilling pulse through me.

Tavares' shield for Alfa in a coma
OPINIONS

A shield from Stellantis to protect the former FCA Italian factories. Carlos Tavares, formerly at the helm of PSA, denies the fears of Italian workers and unions. He reassured the former FCA tricolor factories: "For Italy the good news is that Stellantis will act as a shield, as a protection for some factories, it does not represent a risk". The CEO of Stellantis, immediately after the formalization of the “equal merger” between the Peugeot group and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, wanted to personally get to know the Italian plants.
He left his Paris headquarters for a trip to Italy. On 20 January he visited Mirafiori (the cradle of Fiat), on 21 Melfi (the most advanced and productive plant with Jeeps and the 500 X), on 22 Cassino (the plant in severe crisis for Alfa Romeo sales in dive). Accompanied by John Elkann, who passed from the presidency of FCA to that of Stellantis (the Agnelli family is the relative majority shareholder with 14.4% of the shares), he wanted to know the plants, speak with the workers, discuss with the trade unions.
Italian fears are strong: will Stellantis favor France, which is politically and economically stronger than our country? In the new auto giant, which also sees the presence as a shareholder of the French government but not the Italian one, will the interests of Paris prevail?
Tavares, aware of these fears, spoke of a Stellantis shield for Italy. He reiterated: "Our commitment to the merger is not to close any production plant" and "to safeguard all jobs". It wasn't so obvious. There are those who feared that the commitment to employment was above all valid for the French part of the new auto giant born from the marriage between FCA and PSA, the fourth largest group in the world with over 8 million cars produced every year.
The fear was there and is because many Italian factories are in trouble, the use of layoffs is high. Mirafiori produces the electric Fiat 500 and expects other models, Cassino works at just 15% -20% of production capacity. Giulia and the Suv Stelvio, the two models of the Biscione, are not good. Especially the Alfa Romeo Giulia suffered a slump in sales. Other models have not arrived and only now will production of the new Maserati SUV start in Cassino: Grecale, also built in the electric version.
Tavares judged Cassino's Alfa models to be of good quality but penalized by uncalibrated marketing. He announced a relaunch of Alfa Romeo and Maserati which ended up in dire straits due to the failure of the promised new models: «The very high value of these iconic brands must be recognized. We will make assessments to understand how to support their growth and profitable remedies ». The new helmsman of Stellantis did not give details on the future business plan, but made it clear that part of the 5 billion euros resulting from the synergies produced by the merger will go to investments in the Biscione and Trident brands. Another high-end model should arrive in Cassino after the Grecale.
Somehow Tavares seems to want to resume and implement Sergio Marchionne's plan for Italy: to ensure life and employment in the factories of the Peninsula by focusing on premium brands. In 2017 the then CEO of FCA announced: "From 2020 in Italy the group will only have premium productions, with the Alfa Romeo and Maserati brands". He motivated the choice: "Our way to live in globalization is in the creation of global brands such as Jeep and iconic premium brands such as Alfa and Maserati". Unfortunately it did not happen. Marchionne died suddenly in July 2018. FCA investments went above all for the Jeep and for the American factories of the group, the sales of the Biscione and the Trident (the models are built in Grugliasco) collapsed at a glance.
Tavares has already performed a miracle: it saved Peugeot and Citroen from bankruptcy by focusing on quality, innovation and competitiveness. He incorporated Opel into the PSA group, protecting employment. Now the problem of the many different brands to be reorganized and integrated, avoiding the risk of production overlaps, is being raised. There will be an initial response when it presents the first Stellantis industrial plan.
