According to the police in Rønne, the blood alcohol level of the helmsman was 2,38 0/00 when the accident occurred.

The vessel is approved to transport nuclear waste, but wasn't at the time of the collision.

Gluing up oar blanks. I used (3) boards of 3/4" pine to get the thickness. I tried to find the clearest boars I could at Home Depot. A few knots were OK. Home Depot now has this clear wood that I used for the inner lamination. It is not pine, but looks like it. It is not as soft and a bit heavier. I think it will work out fine. I tried to pick boards that were same weight. The finished oars ended up at 3 lbs each. They have a nice flex. I used Minwax Helmsman polyurethane gloss with 4 coats, sanded in between with 220 grit.

I am finally here and by here I mean at the edge of the ice continent. At about 10am this morning we spotted the first mountains on the South Shetland Islands and the first icebergs followed soon after. By late this afternoon we should be getting close to land and prepare for our first landing tomorrow morning.

Life on the ship for two days while crossing the Drake Passage is a bit on the boring side for me, but it’s all worth it when you see those first icebergs and the first penguins jumping off them. We have also been lucky enough to spot a few humpback whales in the distance and I’m hoping we’ll see some orcas too.

The cool thing about these Antarctic trips is that the boats have an open bridge policy so the image below was taken from the bridge of the ship while the captain was giving quick commands to the helmsman avoiding the bigger pieces of ice.

Tavares' shield for Alfa in a coma

OPINIONS

Rodolfo Ruocco

January 25, 2021

A shield from Stellantis to protect the former FCA Italian factories. Carlos Tavares, formerly at the helm of PSA, denies the fears of Italian workers and unions. He reassured the former FCA tricolor factories: "For Italy the good news is that Stellantis will act as a shield, as a protection for some factories, it does not represent a risk". The CEO of Stellantis, immediately after the formalization of the “equal merger” between the Peugeot group and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, wanted to personally get to know the Italian plants.

He left his Paris headquarters for a trip to Italy. On 20 January he visited Mirafiori (the cradle of Fiat), on 21 Melfi (the most advanced and productive plant with Jeeps and the 500 X), on 22 Cassino (the plant in severe crisis for Alfa Romeo sales in dive). Accompanied by John Elkann, who passed from the presidency of FCA to that of Stellantis (the Agnelli family is the relative majority shareholder with 14.4% of the shares), he wanted to know the plants, speak with the workers, discuss with the trade unions.

Italian fears are strong: will Stellantis favor France, which is politically and economically stronger than our country? In the new auto giant, which also sees the presence as a shareholder of the French government but not the Italian one, will the interests of Paris prevail?

Tavares, aware of these fears, spoke of a Stellantis shield for Italy. He reiterated: "Our commitment to the merger is not to close any production plant" and "to safeguard all jobs". It wasn't so obvious. There are those who feared that the commitment to employment was above all valid for the French part of the new auto giant born from the marriage between FCA and PSA, the fourth largest group in the world with over 8 million cars produced every year.

The fear was there and is because many Italian factories are in trouble, the use of layoffs is high. Mirafiori produces the electric Fiat 500 and expects other models, Cassino works at just 15% -20% of production capacity. Giulia and the Suv Stelvio, the two models of the Biscione, are not good. Especially the Alfa Romeo Giulia suffered a slump in sales. Other models have not arrived and only now will production of the new Maserati SUV start in Cassino: Grecale, also built in the electric version.

Tavares judged Cassino's Alfa models to be of good quality but penalized by uncalibrated marketing. He announced a relaunch of Alfa Romeo and Maserati which ended up in dire straits due to the failure of the promised new models: «The very high value of these iconic brands must be recognized. We will make assessments to understand how to support their growth and profitable remedies ». The new helmsman of Stellantis did not give details on the future business plan, but made it clear that part of the 5 billion euros resulting from the synergies produced by the merger will go to investments in the Biscione and Trident brands. Another high-end model should arrive in Cassino after the Grecale.

Somehow Tavares seems to want to resume and implement Sergio Marchionne's plan for Italy: to ensure life and employment in the factories of the Peninsula by focusing on premium brands. In 2017 the then CEO of FCA announced: "From 2020 in Italy the group will only have premium productions, with the Alfa Romeo and Maserati brands". He motivated the choice: "Our way to live in globalization is in the creation of global brands such as Jeep and iconic premium brands such as Alfa and Maserati". Unfortunately it did not happen. Marchionne died suddenly in July 2018. FCA investments went above all for the Jeep and for the American factories of the group, the sales of the Biscione and the Trident (the models are built in Grugliasco) collapsed at a glance.

Tavares has already performed a miracle: it saved Peugeot and Citroen from bankruptcy by focusing on quality, innovation and competitiveness. He incorporated Opel into the PSA group, protecting employment. Now the problem of the many different brands to be reorganized and integrated, avoiding the risk of production overlaps, is being raised. There will be an initial response when it presents the first Stellantis industrial plan.

From 1860 to about 1940, battleships and armored capital ships were often built with a conning tower, an armored enclosure to protect command personnel in battle.

On the USS Iowa, as built, the conning tower had been a three level tower exposed to the weather, so the vision slits had glass covers. During modifications, part of the conning tower was enclosed by an expanded bridge, so the glass covers in those spaces were removed.

This one is at the 04 level Conning Bridge, where the helmsman, together with the ship's commander and his staff, would be located.

US Battleship Iowa, a museum ship in the Port of Los Angeles, California. This battleship was launched in 1942, saw service in World War II, the Korean War and the later stages of the Cold War. She has been at this location as a museum ship since 2011. Visit of June 18, 2015.

This is inside the conning tower, at the 04 level Conning Bridge, where the helmsman, together with the ship's commander and his staff, would be located.

US Battleship Iowa, a museum ship in the Port of Los Angeles, California. This battleship was launched in 1942, saw service in World War II, the Korean War and the later stages of the Cold War. She has been at this location as a museum ship since 2011. Visit of June 18, 2015.

Bae Systems Combat Support Boat #0011. Seen here in Portsmouth Harbour.

The Combat Support Boat performs tasks normally carried out by bigger vessels, but has the advantage of being air transportable and easily deployed anywhere in the world.

It is in service with the British Army and international armed forces. Its agile design allows it to fulfill a variety of roles, such as bridge building, high speed landing, long range transits, passenger ferry and equipment mobilisation.

The low draft hull form, high payload carrying capability and machinery arrangement make it the most versatile workboat in its class.

It is fitted with an elevated bridge for improved visibility and has several modular cabin and deck fit-out options to suit operators’ requirements. Options range from a basic cabin for helmsman and crew, to a comprehensive fit-out including galley, toilet, shower, dayroom and sleeping accommodation with heating and air conditioning.

as amended by the Teignmouth Harbour Revision Order 2003

Spiny lobsters, also known as rock lobsters are a family (Palinuridae) of about 45 species of achelate crustaceans, in the Decapoda Reptantia. Spiny lobsters are also called crayfish, sea crayfish or crawfish.

Although they superficially resemble true lobsters in terms of overall shape, and having a hard carapace and exoskeleton, the two groups are not closely related. Spiny lobsters can be easily distinguished from true lobsters by their very long, thick, spiny antennae, and by their complete lack of claws (chelae); true lobsters have much smaller antennae and claws on the first three pairs of legs, with the first being particularly enlarged. Like true lobsters, however, spiny lobsters are edible and are an economically significant food source; they are the biggest food export of the Bahamas .

Spiny lobsters are found in almost all warm seas, including the Caribbean and the Mediterranean Sea, but are particularly common in Australasia, where they are referred to commonly as crayfish or sea crayfish (Jasus novaehollandiae and Jasus edwardsii), and South Africa (Jasus lalandii). A new species, Palinurus barbarae was described in 2006.

The largest spiny lobster on record was over 1 m (3 ft) long and weighed over 11.8 kg (26 lb).

Spiny lobsters tend to live in crevices of rocks and coral reefs, only occasionally venturing out at night to seek snails, clams, crabs, sea urchins or carrion to eat. Sometimes, they migrate en masse, in long files of lobsters across the sea floor. Potential predators may be deterred from eating spiny lobsters by a loud screech made by the antennae of the spiny lobsters rubbing against a smooth part of the exoskeleton . Spiny lobsters usually exhibit social habit by being together. However recent studies indicate that healthy lobsters move away from infected ones and leaving the diseased lobsters to fend for itself .

The furry lobsters (e.g. Palinurellus) are sometimes separated into a family of their own, the Synaxidae, but are usually considered members of the Palinuridae. The slipper lobsters (Scyllaridae) are their next closest relatives, and these two or three families make up the Achelata. Genera of spiny lobsters include Palinurus and a number of anagrams thereof: Panulirus, Linuparus, etc. (Palinurus was also a helmsman in Virgil's Æneid.)

Kerala Backwaters, Kerala India

Ah! what pleasant visions haunt me

As I gaze upon the sea!

All the old romantic legends,

All my dreams, come back to me.

Sails of silk and ropes of sandal,

Such as gleam in ancient lore;

And the singing of the sailors,

And the answer from the shore!

Most of all, the Spanish ballad

Haunts me oft, and tarries long,

Of the noble Count Arnaldos

And the sailor's mystic song.

Like the long waves on a sea-beach,

Where the sand as silver shines,

With a soft, monotonous cadence,

Flow its unrhymed lyric lines:--

Telling how the Count Arnaldos,

With his hawk upon his hand,

Saw a fair and stately galley,

Steering onward to the land;--

How he heard the ancient helmsman

Chant a song so wild and clear,

That the sailing sea-bird slowly

Poised upon the mast to hear,

Till his soul was full of longing,

And he cried, with impulse strong,--

"Helmsman! for the love of heaven,

Teach me, too, that wondrous song!"

"Wouldst thou,"--so the helmsman answered,

"Learn the secret of the sea?

Only those who brave its dangers

Comprehend its mystery!"

In each sail that skims the horizon,

In each landward-blowing breeze,

I behold that stately galley,

Hear those mournful melodies;

Till my soul is full of longing

For the secret of the sea,

And the heart of the great ocean

Sends a thrilling pulse through me.

Many skeletons were recovered from the Vasa (1638) and reconstructions of what several of them looked like are on display at the museum purpose-built for it in Stockholm, June 2010. This is of a man about 30 years old who was found at the helm and was probably the helmsman. He had poor teeth, a misaligned jaw, was short and of slight build. He is wearing a low-collared jacket fastened with glass buttons. His cap is typical of those found on Vasa. The museum has called him 'Filip'!

Note that the large wooden ship's wheel is disconnected. The ship is steered using the small joystick the helmsman has his finger on. The man in white is the ship's captain, a traditional Nile riverboat skipper.

The Palinuro is a three-masted, iron-hulled barquentine, active as sails trainings vessel for the Italian Navy.

The Italian sail training vessel Palinuro is named after Palinurus the famous helmsman of Aeneas's ship (after the fall of Troy the defeated Trojans detoured the Mediterranean). Palinurus is seen as a prototype of an experienced navigator or guide.

History

Built at the shipyard Anciens Chantiers Dubigeon in Nantes by order of Joseph Briand (together with her sister ship Lieutenant René Guillon) and named Commandant Louis Richard, the ship was intended as barquentine. However the building costs of both ships ruined the original customer even before the ships were finished. The new owner Pècheries du Labrador from Saint-Malo finished the ships as schooner to be used for cod fishing.

In 1948 the Commandant Louis Richard was bought by shipowner Bonin from Noirmoutier-en-Île, changed to a barquentine and renamed Jean Marc Aline to be used for fishing in the Southern Indian Ocean. Eventually this activity became unprofitable, thus the ship was set for sale.

In 1951 the Italian Navy was looking for a replacement for the Cristoforo Colombo (passed to the Soviet Union), bought the vessel and renamed her Palinuro. After a complete renovation the ship is used as training vessel for Senior Ratings. Type: Iron-hulled barquentine

Tonnage: 858 gross tons

Length: LOA:69 m

Beam: 10 m

Height: 37,50 m at mainmast

Draught: 4,80 m

Sail plan: Barquentine rig, 15 sails

Speed: 9.5 knots
