Sick sunset from my gym's rooftop, this evening. At first I just wanted to look at it. Then I ran to get my camera.
Here's a panoramic shot I took of Mount Baker looming over downtown Vancouver when I was on Bowen Island last week. That little dot in the top left corner is a seaplane!
Another orange sky tonight. Very hazy due to, I presume, all the smoke caused by the current BC wildfire emergency.
Yesterday was an awesome day to take a photo of the British Columbia Parliament Buildings located in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
It was pretty quiet at the Parliament Buildings first thing in the morning.
Looking out from downtown Vancouver during sunset we see 2 CN sets of power in CP Rail's waterfront yard.
Alright, it's not really a midnight sun (duh!). I saw that the moon would be in the Milky Way a few months ago, and noted the date and time. I had been curious about Iona beach for a little while, as the jetty goes pretty far out at sea (the South jetty is 4 km long) and might provide an environment with less light pollution that's easy to access within the metro Vancouver area. So I decided to bike to the end of the jetty from Templeton station.
When I got there at 10pm, the sky was mostly covered in clouds and I couldn't see much of the stars. I could see a big clearing to the West, so I waited, taking photos at various exposures and apertures to figure out what worked best with my lens and camera combo. It took about 40 minutes for the sky to clear, and I chose one of the last shots with small clouds still in the sky because I liked the texture it added.
This was mostly a test shot to see if I could get the Milky Way even with the moon in it and in a light polluted environment, and it was conclusive. If I had to redo it, I would have used a tracker and taken multiple shots of the sky to make it cleaner, and I would have probably taken a couple long exposures of the foreground to eliminate the noise.
My ideal settings for this scenario was 30s exposure at f/5.6 and ISO 3200 or 1600. I had taken shots from ISO 800 all the way to ISO 12800. I found that from ISO 800 to ISO 3200, it didn't really make a difference (I processed all three to the exact same curves and exposure, and there was no difference in noise and seemingly no difference in dynamic range either). At higher ISOs, the highlights were much more blown out, so ideally, I would have used ISO 1600 or 3200.
This was shot with my A7R II and Laowa 12mm f/2.8 lens. I used f/5.6 because it gave me the best compromise between sharpness and light gathering. F/2.8 and f/4 didn't look good enough. F/8 looked slightly better, but it wasn't worth gathering one stop less light.
It's rare to see Okanagan Lake freeze enough to allow people to skate on it. Quite a joyful sight to behold.
