As for sharpness itself, it is different from person to person, from watcher to watcher. Different eyes percept sharpness in different ways.
We enthusiasts sometimes forget other features and components of a good image in a favour of a sharpness alone.

Keeping in mind typical Canon PowerShot buyers are not the most sophisticated pixel peeping crowd.
i've been watching the moon for the last couple of nights and when i took the dogs out before bed tonight i just HAD to go back inside and get my camera. i haven't tried to take a picture of the moon in a long time (my first try was here in june of '08). this was handheld using my canon 75-300mm EF zoom lens racked all the way out to 300mm. i had my camera set to spot metering and turned the exposure compensation to -2. i set it to shutter speed priority and selected 1/400 (using that rule about 1/focal length and then going just a tad faster since i was trying to shoot the moon).
as far as editing goes, i imported the RAW file to lightroom and did a few adjustments. i cropped, decreased the contrast, increased the blacks a little, increased the clarity a little, and increased the sharpness a little. then i converted to b/w because there was a little chromatic abberration on the edges. other than eliminating that, i didn't notice any change in the image by converting to b/w. then i exported and opened in photoshop to add my watermark.

Handheld pano. Unfortunately I missed a couple of spots and had to clone a bit. Fixed the stitching as much as I could but I wasn't paying enough attention to keeping the lens on the nodal spot.

Our new Border Collie puppy, Nic, has only been with us for a few days, but Ben has already become a good friend to him. My other two, Lad and Nan, tolerate Nic and his puppy antics; Ben, however, will actually play with him. Good boy, Ben! Ben has always been the type of dog to get along with everyone.
