This was our first evening in France...out to dinner in this area. The lights and activity were wonderful. With the new Topaz Impressions plug in, the effects just seemed so appropos for these scenes. The original image was tack sharp, shot at 2500 ISO, handheld...it is a nice image but the painterly feel just keeps speaking to me :)
Just an FYI for those on Macs that have wanted to use the Mac incompatible Fractilius plug in ...this programme can create some of that look.
My wife Dee & I spent the day birding at a new location in Pennsylvania. This was our first visit to the area and we were looking for birds to photograph. After walking about 1/4 mile down a gravel trail we came upon this beautiful waterfall. I had my camera set up for birding not shooting long exposure waterfall shots. I had the wrong lens and no tripod for long exposures. So I had to use what I had and shoot handheld. Here I am shooting the falls handheld in the next shot. I could only shoot the very top part of this beautiful waterfall with the lens I had on my camera. You can bet that Dee and I will make a return trip real soon with the right equipment. I really want to see these falls in Autumn when all the fall colors are bursting.

Compare and contrast
In a departure from my norm, I’m showing two photos today.
They are, more or less, the same composition – with slightly different exposures.
Part of enjoying the process (see yesterday’s entry) was to experiment with the shutter speed. How slow could I get it and still have a reasonably sharp, hand-held image?
Well, the first image was shot at 1/8th of a second; the next one at 3/10ths of a second. And I’m happy with the sharpness of both shots. The wonders of in-camera image stabilisation!
I wouldn’t recommend this approach to anyone who was keen to get a particular image. But it was an interesting experiment (at least, to me!).
