Milky Way stars over 'The Organ' in the "Courthouse Towers" region of Arches National Park. The Organ has been light painted (aka light painting) from a stationary quartz halogen light (see lighting and camera position map below). The glow on the right horizon is from the moon, which will rise in another 30 minutes. Camera direction is North.

Milky Way stars (facing north) over the Three Sisters hoodoos in Goblin Valley State Park, Utah. Note Andromeda Galaxy (M31), mid-sky, right. My friend, Steve Bunderson, and I did this shot together: he ran our cameras (and gave me feedback*), and I did the light painting.

Technical Stuff: The 3-Sisters are about 80 feet (24 m.) high, and were light-painted with a hand-held 1-million candle power quartz-halogen spotlight, from a distance of about 250 feet to the left. This was a single exposure, using a 14mm f/2.8 Rokinon lens on a Canon 5D Mk3 (f/2.8 • 30" • ISO 5000). See map below in comments or click here (I also have additional info there about the light painting and the spotlight I used).

Installed Ikea's halogen under-cabinet lighting system today. Very easy, and it looks amazing. We still have to resolve the center light, sink pendant situation ... basically I just need to pick out the fixtures. Baby-steps.

A tricky challenge, getting the subject lit and the glass visible without reflections blocking the view.

Then I added an extra level of silly by choosing a silver and glass subject...

What I am trying to get across in this photo is that if you sit in this seat you need to be prepared to spend a great deal of money. The seating in this jewelry store is meant to isolate you with a salesperson, while the diamonds are bathed in high intensity light., making them sparkle and tantalizing. ;-)

Halogen light, the color is one Atn my own and the texture too.

Drewton Railway Tunnel, part of the old of the old Hull & Barnsley Railway.

Outside of Hull, West of Little Weighton in an 83 feet deep cutting still lays the 2,114 yards (1.2miles) Railway tunnel.

The first goods traffic on 20th July 1885 with the passenger services a week later. This was short lived with Little Weighton’s passenger service ending on 1st August 1955. Through freight traffic ended in December 1958, marking the tunnel’s retirement. A shuttle service from Hull fed the coal yard until 1964 but, that summer, Little Weighton’s rail connection was finally severed, having survived less than 80 years

Such a bad day, just lost the diamond earring I bought last week.... Have to track back where I passed and checked every glittering particle I see in the road and proved that "not all that glitters" is diamond They were mostly debris from broken glasses or something. -(

I'm such a chicken when it comes to taking pictures in public places, especially if it is of a random thing that most 'normal' people wouldn't take a photo of. I just imagine them thinking, 'Why is he taking a photo of a light fitting?', and wimp out. In all likelihood they were right to question why I was taking a shot of a light fitting but I saw a nice line and was brave enough to take a quick shot (even if I did pretend to take another few to look a little less odd!)

Illumination: Halogen and white(!) LED (Ra>95)

This is a collage of 8 pictures from the very same scale, but different illumination (white light, but different incident angles and different polarization angles). This leads to the brilliant iridescence of that butterfly.

Visit the album to see some colour variants of the scales!

This butterfly is a true master in structural (physical) colors. Oblique light produces blue/aquamarin, direct illumination results in a yellow reflection. Back-illumination yields red/brown. Thus, depending on illumination angle (and polarization) any mixture between yellow and blue can be obtained. In addition to the iridecent scales, there are several "normal scales" with pigment colours from brown to orange, yellow and almost white. If you are interested in the details, here is a nature article explaining this phenomenon:

Vukusic, P., Sambles, J. & Lawrence, C. Colour mixing in wing scales of a butterfly . Nature 404, 457 (2000).

Illumination: coaxial (pure epi-illumination with white light (halogen lamp)

The wings of aphids are rather thin (about 500nm), and also very rough (+-160nm). Thats why they show up with rather small regions of the same color (in epi-illumination at high magnification), leading to the impression of psychedelic art.

Fraisthorpe beach again. I've hardly done any light graffiti this year, and only been to the beach a couple of times earlier in Spring. But I've got ideas I'd like to try out, so need to get back there before the weather turns too cold and nasty to paddle about in the surf at 3 am.

Most of this is your basic light graffiti tools - ie small LED torches with filters, some EL wire, and a small amount of halogen spot light here and there.

The "creature" didn't work as planned. I should've practiced more at home first, and added a nose and/or mouth feature to give it more solidity. On the other hand, I did get the eyes to align well. Really should've just done another plant/flower feature in its place.

Post production work is mainly colour balancing, levels/contrast, saturation, touching out a dozen or so noise hot spots, and some localised colour balance and a little dodge/burn to balance things up a bit. Some purists may think this is against the SOOC ethos of light graffiti, but it's mild retouching, and nothing beyond what could be done in a traditional hand printing colour darkroom (and therefore thought of as normal and not altering the image, but enhancing it).

I'm already hoping the next full moon is as good. This one was so bright that I was having overexposure problems! Took a few shots to nail it. Even this one at 17 mins 15 sec, ISO 100, f/8 was a little overexposed.
