I found two cats resting under the halogen heater yesterday. It was rain and cold.

The place was very near to the Akihabara station, but no body and no commodity in the old dusty shop except them.

Un joli papillon photographié ce soir au dessus de l'halogène, puis identification, et là horreur, c'est une pyrale du buis (mâle) !!!

En bas, au milieu, une photo trouvée sur internet où l'on voit bien la chenille, et à droite et à gauche des photos de mai 2015 du vieux buis près du puits, complètement infesté par les larves qui le détruisent peu à peu. Traiter ce fléau qui décime les buis est très difficile, et je ne sais pas si j'arriverai à le sauver; manifestement il reste encore des papillons, je vais recommencer le traitement...

Didn't have the chance of shooting pictures today so I had to come up with something for today's PAD picture. Time was running out so I grabbed what was handy. I've been doing a few pictures of my instruments lately so I decided to spice it up a bit with some Star Wars nerdism, hope you like it :)

The outer part of a dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) petal has an extraordinarily high ultraviolet reflectance relative to the visible green, yellow and red light. The spectrum here is measured from 200 – 1000nm with both a deuterium (DH-mini) and a tungsten-halogen (HL-2000) lamp using a Maya2000Pro spectrometer against a WS-1 reflectance standard..

The Tiny Ones: series 2 (Nikon D1, Carl Zeiss Luminar 25mm f3.5)

 

+ no PS manipulation, just dust cleaning. I used a 12V Halogen bulb, then connected it to a low batt EN-4 to produce a slight glow on the filament. The bluish / purple background is caused by the tiny "square" mirror like reflectors on the Halogen lamp, not PS effects. The light source is from a flourescent lamp at the back. By moving the lamp around, I can change the colour of the backdrops =D and the weird "milky black" colour is just crystal (glass). To me, the background colour looks like dusk and the filament is the sleeping sun...

 

bought a NIAN lighted shelving (on sale!) from IKEA.

hacked it up and made a light table out of it.

first thing i did was insert some foil inside the shelving unit under the light source. it increased the EV of the light (with dome) from 10 to 11.5

the pedestal base's from an old halogen floor lamp.

the pen holders are made from the remaining pipe from the halogen lamp, cut up with a pipe cutter. then attached with leftover holes from the wooden assembly, and taped up with foil tape. the tubes stay up with a strip of lexan bolted to the shelving brackets included with the shelf.

i added some extra support for the pipe under the storage unit, and added the CD spindle case to cover the screws sticking up. it also doubles as a spacer for the storage compartment.

One of the funniest TV quotes of all time from a 70's show, "WKRP in Cincinatti" serves as my title this week for "Tutorial Tuesday"

 

Mixed Lighting Conditions

 

Often times when shooting photos indoors we are faced with multiple light sources, fluorescent, tungsten, halogen, direct sunlight, filtered sunlight, reflected sunlight, etc., the list goes on and on. The challenge this presents is the differing color temperatures between them. Tungsten is somewhere around 2850K, while sunlight is around 5600k. Fluorescent? It is somewhere in the 3000’s but has a huge green tint to it. For example, in this photo from my parents’ kitchen there is sunlight from a window to the right, fluorescent from a recessed fixture in the kitchen ceiling, and lighting directly overhead from a low voltage halogen fixture; a white balance (WB) nightmare. What to do?

 

Well you could use the White Balance Adjustment Brush in Lightroom to make localized corrections. The problem is that this particular brush doesn’t exist! I was a LR3 beta tester and everything, yet they didn’t take my suggestion? Curse you Adobe! We could use a flash and a gel to make sure our subject is at least correct, but we will save that for a future Tutorial Tuesday. Instead, we will process the same image(s) with different WB and blend them together with layer masks in Photoshop.

 

Not to worry, we have a few ways to balance the mixed light sources and make our photo usable. First, if you aren’t using a gray card you need to start. Right now. Stop reading and get a gray card. Next, make sure you are shooting RAW. If you aren’t, stop reading get your camera and switch settings. If we are shooting JPEGS, we will have a hard time fixing white balance problems down the road.

 

Once you have your gray card and are shooting RAW, plop the card down near your subject and zoom in or move the camera closer so that the card fills the entire frame. Be careful not to cast a shadow over the card. Snap a properly exposed photo. This will give us a reference point to make sure our subject is solid as far as WB goes. While we could make a present within camera, I prefer to handle WB within Lightroom (or Adobe Camera RAW if you don’t have Lightroom), notwithstanding their lack of an adjustment brush. You can also repeat this for the other areas of your final composition by moving the card to each area of a differing light source. I skipped that step here though. Now we can recompose and take our photo(s).

 

After importing your images into Lightroom, grab your gray card image and enter the Develop module. Grab the little eye dropper thingy and click onto an area of your gray card. The WB will change. This is your reference WB for your subject. While pushing the CTRL (CMD for Mac) key, select your final image(s). Hit the “Sync” button. If you are shooting HDR, process your brackets. If not, create a copy of your final image.

 

Now, we need to adjust the WB for the other light sources. If you shot other reference photos with your gray card, you can repeat the steps above creating a copy for each respective WB. If not, you have to eyeball it. The presets are a good start.

 

Once you have your final photos with the differing WB, send them to Photoshop as Layers (select all photos, right click, edit, open in Photoshop as Layers). Align your layers, placing your “subject” WB image on the bottom. Add layer masks to all layers above the bottom. Fill each mask with “Black”. Starting with the top layer, begin to punch through the mask revealing the proper WB for the particular area. I started by masking in the “sunlight” WB from the window and started with a 300 pixel soft brush at 30% opacity. Repeat for each additional layer. Take care to not create harsh transitions. In some cases you can even use a gradient in your mask to help transition between the areas. When satisfied, flatten your image and continue with your processing (noise reduction, sharpening, minor color and contrast corrections, etc.). I applied a vintage color scheme here, reduced noise, selectively sharpened, and tossed in a curves layer.

 

The quickest way to combat WB problems? Convert to black and white. That's cheating though.

 

By the way, that's a pineapple, grapes, cheese, a sweet potato, and carrots used to make the fake turkey.

Indoor session with a rather nice Jensen fork and one of those desk lamps with lots of tiny halogen bulbs in it ... hence the blue cast. Completely without any post-processing

This butterfly is a true master in structural (physical) colors. Oblique light produces blue/aquamarin, direct illumination results in a yellow reflection. Back-illumination yields red/brown. Thus, depending on illumination angle (and polarization) any mixture between yellow and blue can be obtained. In addition to the iridecent scales, there are several "normal scales" with pigment colours from brown to orange, yellow and almost white. At one time, life in the lighting department was simple; you had bayonet bulbs in 40, 60 and 100 watt flavours. They could either be pearl or clear (ours were all pearl).

 

Now we have a wide variety of light fittings, some lamps we brought from England have bayonet fittings, Spanish ones are small or large ES caps. Some take incandescent bulbs others we use long life bulbs for and we even have halogen bulbs for the standard lamps, the lights in the cupboard above the sideboard, the ceiling light in the kitchen and the lights in the kitchen cupboards (all different of course).

 

The one I need at the moment is a small ES screw candle bulb for the cooker hood and guess what, I have run out of them!

I received these little buggers yesterday. LED replacements for the olskool halogen 21/5watt lightbulbs (brake lights). These should be a lot brighter than the SMD LEDs I had before.

 

I will post some before and after pics later. First impressions are good! They seem a lot brighter than their 21watt halogen counterparts.

The lamp is mirrored in a double window pane. The upper pinkish reflection is from the inner glass, the lower reflection from the outer. THe light source is probably 12V halogen.

 

I remember the lower reflection as greenish, on this screen it looks brownish. Ethical question: Should I adjust the color to match what I know that I saw?

 

I did not touch the saturation directly. But even in LAB mode, level adjustment may affect perceived saturation.

 

Magnus tells me that the surfaces have different coating, to allow heat in, but not out.

Water just stating to kick up in the Hario Sommelier

Unit #458, belonging to the Cranberry Township Police Department. This 2012 Chevy Caprice with a 6.0L V8. This is the last unit with the department with the old skin. Equipped with a Federal Signal Valor, single halogen spotlight, and a Pro Gard push bumper. This is their oldest unit, and is the next one to go.

My bakfiets came with the "Pilot Classic Halogen Basta" light. I left it on nearly all the time I've ridden it. I figure it adds some margin of safety, and seemed "free" to do since the electricity comes from a generator in the front wheel, and I even perceive that I'm apply extra effort to run the generator.

 

After about a year of service, the bulb burned out, although there was visible evidence it was bad. The bulb is a 2.4w 6v Halogen, which wasn't stocked at the local hardware and auto stores online. I eventually took a chance and ordered this tersely described bulb from Niagra Cycle Works. It is the one seen in the photo and it is working fine.

 

It may appear that you are seeing two lights in the front, but the bottom circle is simply a reflector. (You'll also notice the sidewalls of the Schwalbe Marathon tires are very reflective).

 

Some notes on replacing the bulb: There is a single Phillip's head screw on the back of the light that holds it all together. There is very little clearance between the back of the light and the frame, though. You'll either need a very short screwdriver, or you may need to loosen the bolt that mounts the light on.

 

I used a small screwdriver on my all-in-one bike tool for the job, but it was just big enough to be awkward, and the screw became slightly stripped in the process.

 

I'm just glad the problem wasn't more complicated and that I'm prepared to for this repair in the future (I bought two bulbs just in case!)

I wanted to use my IS PRO to see how much UV a halogen lamp emits.

 

I took two photos with identical camera settings (10s at f/25).

 

Image A is a halogen desk lamp with a Baader UV ("Venus") filter that passes UV, blocks all visible, and leaks a small amount of IR (I'm told it's 5 stops down on the UV pass).

 

Image B is exactly the same camera setup but with a no-name 750nm IR PASS filter between the camera and lamp. So the image shows only the IR that leaks through the Baader U filter.

 

Image C was created by subtracting image B from image A. If optics works like maths, this should mean that image C is just the UV element from image A.

 

I was interested to see that image C has lost the purple cast that has been characteristic of all my UV experiments to date. The image looks oddly negative because the filament peaked out in both original images, so it went to black in the calculated image C.

This is a clever design from Ikea. A halogen bulb lights up the concave shape of regular bulb creating an illusion. If I have any criticism, it is that the outer shape should have been a rectangle.

My new Alfa Romeo Giulia, has adopted distinctive technologies designed in conjunction with Magneti Marelli.

 

Magneti Marelli is making an important contribution, first and foremost within the area of electronic systems: at the forefront is the CDC (Chassis Domain Control) electronic control unit, the "brain" of the car, and the new infotainment system equipped with an 8.8 "black panel" TFT (Thin Film Transistor) display which integrates innovative "optical bonding" technologies designed for perfect display readability.

 

The CDC is the electronic control unit developed by Magneti Marelli that represents the "brain" of the on-board electronics and optimises handling and performance.

 

Specifically, the CDC is a "supervisor" which adapts the car set-up dynamically and in real-time, based on the data from inertial sensors that measure the vertical, lateral and longitudinal accelerations and rotation. The system anticipates and manages critical situations, informing in advance the specific control units involved in the electronic system through the vehicle networks.

 

The CDC control unit increases driving comfort and safety by predictively adopting control and management protocols that coordinate the action of the Alfa DNA, of the Torque Vectoring (the system that allows the rear differential to separately control the torque for each wheel), of the Aero Splitter (the electro-mechanical system that dynamically manages the downforce, which is the aerodynamic force that enables car road grip, and of the Active Damping Control (adaptive electronic suspensions), as well as the control of the stability, the chassis, the braking system, the steering and the driving assistance.

 

Again in the context of electronic systems, Magneti Marelli has developed for the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio the multimedia infotainment system and the Connect 3D Nav navigation system with an 8.8" total black "TFT display". The system uses Genivi open source technology and responds to automotive performance and robustness criteria. Based on Linux language, it integrates the connection with the electronic control network of the car. Aiming at the objective of the "connected car", the Alfa Romeo Giulia infotainment system offers a sophisticated set of features and functionalities including the features of media player, navigation system and the management of vehicle parameters. In practice, from the user's perspective, the image of the display appears on the surface of the dashboard with an excellent level of viewing and contrast.

 

With regard to lighting systems, Magneti Marelli has collaborated with Alfa Romeo to produce the headlamps and rear lamps of the Giulia, distinctive and characteristic design elements of the car. The Giulia Quadrifoglio headlamps are made with Xenon technology equipped with AFS (Adaptive Frontlight System) technology and with a 35W lighting module, a solution that increases the lighting capability by 200% compared to standard halogen headlamps, thus ensuring greater safety when driving. The LED technology is adopted for position lights, DRL (Daytime Running Light), cornering lights and for the indicators. The LED rear tail lights, a synthesis of stylistic and technological excellence, identify the rear of the car uniquely and distinctively, further enhancing the straight and dynamic line of the car.
