Halogen lighting is harsh, but sometimes it works for effect.
I bought this point and shoot camera today for $3.20. It needed cleaning, but it works great. Yashica Auto Focus Motor.
Photo: Sony NEX-5N + Yashinon 5cm, f2.0
Since I did not have a macro lens, I used my detached 50mm f/1.7 for this shot. Holding it with some distance in front of the camera magnified the bulb and allowed me to take this shot.

The five light halogen powered siphon bar, a first of its kind in the United States, was manufactured by the Lucky i. Cremas Company of Japan. Blue Bottle purchased it through Jay Egami, who imports coffee and equipment for beverage giant UCC, for $20,000.
The siphon brewing method, often referred to as the vaccum method or vacpot, brews coffee using two chambers where vapor pressure and vacuum produce coffee. First water is heated to a boil in a glass carafe. Coffee grounds are then placed in a container, which is inserted into the top of the carafe. The hot water makes its way up the stem of the carafe into the coffee ground container, where it is stirred. Removed from heat, the brewed coffee is pulled trhough the filter of the coffee ground container by gravity and pressure differential.
The Blue Bottle Coffee Mint Plaza Café, at 66 Mint Street, opened in January 2008 in the rear of the 1912 Provident Loan Building. In addition to siphon bar, the café, Blue Bottle's first, features a Kyoto-style iced coffee aparatus, a one-group San Marco lever machine, and a three-group La Marzocco Linea used for the 17 ft. Ceiling espresso blend. The café features breakfast, brunch and lunch menus as well as desserts made at the Blue Bottle Kitchen in Oakland.
Named after The Blue Bottle, Central Europe's first coffee house opened in 1683 in Vienna by Franz George Kolshitsky, Blue Bottle Coffee was started by James Freeman in 2001. He would roast his own coffee beans in a 186-square-foot shed adjacent to his Oakland apartment and brew fresh coffee at farmers' markets around the Bay Area. As his business grew, he expanded his roastery and built a commercial baking kitchen that is run by his wife, Caitlin Williams Freeman. In 2005, he opened a permanent kiosk in Hayes Valley and in 2009 expanded with a full fledged café in the Ferry Building and a smaller café in the San Franciscco Museum of Modern Art. In 2010, Blue Bottle expanded to New York with a café in Williamsburg.
Unit #458, belonging to the Cranberry Township Police Department. This 2012 Chevy Caprice with a 6.0L V8. This is the last unit with the department with the old skin. Equipped with a Federal Signal Valor, single halogen spotlight, and a Pro Gard push bumper. This is their oldest unit, and is the next one to go.
Halogen lights are the worst.
Anyway, Mathin's Chic-line body arrived today so after a long wait he doesn't have to borrow Mackenzie's in order to "exist".
I couldn't be happier with the body, it's hunky without being super jacked which would not suit my little cheeky guy's personality in the least.
Best part, most of my minifee hands fit over the tabs in the wrists.
However I don't entirely trust him on his feet, I presume because he's super tight and kicky.

This 2011 Ford Crown Victoria belongs to the Borough of Verona Police Department. This is their last Crown Victoria, while the rest of their fleet is the new Ford Police Interceptor Utilities. It is equipped with a Whelen Liberty light bar and a single halogen spotlight. The unit is kept inside when not in service. The reflective tape is neat, for it is one piece across while most of them split back across the rear. Since the last time I have seen this unit, they have added grille lights.
You are looking at the best things that have ever happened to me: my kids. To the left is my golf nut son, Danny. To the right is my daughter Sara, who communicates seemingly to everyone but me. Yes, they are teens.
Each of them have a lot of me in them. Danny is brilliant and lazy, able to remember so much that he hasn't mastered the tedious parts of school. Sara is tuneful and has a delightful sense of humor, but she also has a rebellious side.
I don't see them as much as I would like. I don't have custody, and I sometimes give up the time I am entitled to so that they can do what is important to them. Its a tight line to walk between asserting my desire to see them versus fostering a resentment at me for taking them away from their friends and activities. In the end, I've decided that if they know how much I love them, then their needs are met and I can set aside my own needs.
I love my kids, and I am proud of them.

I’m not really happy with how this outfit came out (too layered), but I love the pose. I remind myself of Super Kawaii Mama. She just oozes confidence in every photo.
I took ballet at the Tomaki Dance Studio while I was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. I was the only American (and only white girl) in the class. I would converse with the other students using mostly hand gestures and silly facial expressions. They constantly told me I was “kawaii.” The compliment always made me duck my head and mumble an embarrassed thank you. Surrounded by those tiny, nimble dancers, I called myself “the great white whale,” and thought I was anything but cute!
Ah well, fake it until you make it, right?

Strobist info:

Another day, another leaf :)
I'm not going to apologise, they make a great subject to play around with backlighting, plus I like the autumn colours.
After lighting with flash lighting, I thought I would try with continuous and see if I could get such crisp results. Not surprisingly, much slower shutter speeds are needed, but as this is easier with a tripod anyway, thats not a problem.
Also, I thought I would play with the surface of the DIY light table. The tracing paper I used previously still worked, but I cant help playing :)
An old Tupperware container was pulled out from the back of the kitchen cupboard and was placed on top of the cardboard box. It even has the Tupperware name embossed in it and that was directly under the stem of the leaf, but doesn't show up at all in the image when light is shone through it.
For the light, I used a pretty standard halogen desk lamp which I think is fitted with a 15W bulb. Not usually the best type of light for an even covering, but as it is all bounced around inside the box, this was not a problem. Hopefully the setup below will show how effective it was at giving a nice even light.

As the photographer in the family, I have been given the job of photographing items to be sold on the family business website or on eBay. There is quite a bit of variety (if you think about what might be found in a cave belonging to a genie!) and I quite enjoy doing it. This image was taken using a small light tent illuminated by a pair of halogen lamps of the type commonly found in bathroom or kitchen ceilings.

The new Blue Bottle CAFE has opened in Mint Plaza. All I can say is WOW.
Great food - tried the poached eggs & toast (Eatwell Farm's poached eggs served atop thick Acme toast with whipped butter) and their warm Braeburn apple & D'anjou pear compote (K&J Orchards fruit, toasted walnuts, Greek-style yogurt). Also had their latte and a standard drip.
This picture is of their widely publicized (NYT, USA Today) coffee syphon bar in action. (Sorry, it's an iPhone snap). I'm told that this is the only halogen based coffee syphon in North America.
They also have another alchemy-esque station with larger glass balls for making their Kyoto iced coffee (need to try it). They have a 3 group La Marzocco for regular espresso drinks, and a 2 lever piston La Marzocco for single origins.
The place is pretty minimalist-urban-chic. No signage up (yet?)
They are also selling bags of some new blends at this cafe. Need to get more info on those some time soon.
Can I use the L word? Yes I can. I LOVE it. Pure java nirvana.

A sign In Covent Garden (a shop next to The Crazy Frog jewelry shop)... think they sell saucy clothes for women... he he!!!!
Had this ages, have been meaning to put it up, and as I have run dry , so be it!
Perhaps the most important letter in my personal Alphabet of Life, J is for Jamie. It is hard to overestimate the impact this woman has had in my life.
I don't want to go into the gory details of my life before I met Jamie. Frankly, it was a horrible time, the low point of my life. I can reach out and touch the angst I felt when I was a teen, so painful was that. Even so, the reality of where I was when we met is much worse than any teen angst can imagine.
I had given up and was wallowing in a hopelessness. There's a popular commercial that says that depression hurts, and I can affirm that it does. I may not have had festering boils, but I certainly had Jobian sores on my psyche.
Enter Jamie. She somehow saw potential in me. Whether it was a vision of my future or an echo of my past, she had faith in who I could be. She was relentless in her love for me. She saw me through some horribly bad times. She had patience. And once or twice, she actually helped me financially at her own personal risk. I can still feel the shame of that, but I also feel gratitude.
When I finally reached emotional rock bottom, Jamie held me when I cried myself to sleep.
Now, when I look back at how I was I am astonished at how far I have come. There were days when all I could look forward to is when unconsciousness would overtake me again. I can see so clearly how depressed I was. From the other side of the river, the view is so much clearer.
I have come far with Jamie, holding her hand. Two years ago, her grasp helped me up. Now, it is a touch of tenderness.
I love to see the comments on my photos saying how much Jamie and I love each other. Often, the comments take the form of how lucky she is to have me.
Today you may finally understand that I am the lucky one. The love of a good woman is all the luck a man needs.
Thank you Jamie. You literally saved my life.
This is also my one hundred thirtieth daily self-portrait for 365 Days.
Mainly lit by the IKEA Halogen Desk Lamp to photo left. The 430EX is directly in front, about a foot right of the camera and pointed straight up with 1/16 power. Of course, there is the light from the window too. Thanks to Strobist for encouraging me to take my flash off-camera.
