This is a clever design from Ikea. A halogen bulb lights up the concave shape of regular bulb creating an illusion. If I have any criticism, it is that the outer shape should have been a rectangle.

Utilizing technology from the proven T880 product line, the newly styled, complex reflector halogen headlight provides the Kenworth T880S projector beam lighting performance without the extra cost, along with a thick, polycarbonate lens and UV inhibitor for long life.

Standard: Halogen lamps with foglights.

Option: 25W BiXenon - no separate foglights.

Option: 35W BiXenon (AFS) and no separate fogligths. (Included in the "Sport Package AFS"

 

I´ve ordered the 35W option, and they perform perfectly.

 

My new Alfa Romeo Giulia, has adopted distinctive technologies designed in conjunction with Magneti Marelli.

 

Magneti Marelli is making an important contribution, first and foremost within the area of electronic systems: at the forefront is the CDC (Chassis Domain Control) electronic control unit, the "brain" of the car, and the new infotainment system equipped with an 8.8 "black panel" TFT (Thin Film Transistor) display which integrates innovative "optical bonding" technologies designed for perfect display readability.

 

The CDC is the electronic control unit developed by Magneti Marelli that represents the "brain" of the on-board electronics and optimises handling and performance.

 

Specifically, the CDC is a "supervisor" which adapts the car set-up dynamically and in real-time, based on the data from inertial sensors that measure the vertical, lateral and longitudinal accelerations and rotation. The system anticipates and manages critical situations, informing in advance the specific control units involved in the electronic system through the vehicle networks.

 

The CDC control unit increases driving comfort and safety by predictively adopting control and management protocols that coordinate the action of the Alfa DNA, of the Torque Vectoring (the system that allows the rear differential to separately control the torque for each wheel), of the Aero Splitter (the electro-mechanical system that dynamically manages the downforce, which is the aerodynamic force that enables car road grip, and of the Active Damping Control (adaptive electronic suspensions), as well as the control of the stability, the chassis, the braking system, the steering and the driving assistance.

 

Again in the context of electronic systems, Magneti Marelli has developed for the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio the multimedia infotainment system and the Connect 3D Nav navigation system with an 8.8" total black "TFT display". The system uses Genivi open source technology and responds to automotive performance and robustness criteria. Based on Linux language, it integrates the connection with the electronic control network of the car. Aiming at the objective of the "connected car", the Alfa Romeo Giulia infotainment system offers a sophisticated set of features and functionalities including the features of media player, navigation system and the management of vehicle parameters. The heart of the system is a latest-generation HMI (Human-Machine Interface) developed with HTML5 programming language where management of the system primarily takes place via the Rotary Pad and through the 8.8" TFT display on the car dashboard.

 

Navigation is characterised by high-resolution maps with 3D and high-speed elements for the calculation of routes and by Dead Reckoning technology that even follows the route in areas not covered by a GPS signal. The 8.8" TFT display also shows the vehicle settings, the diagnostics, the parking assistant control, highlighting the type of set-up associated with the Alfa DNA, and interaction with the CAN network for the collection and exchange of data.

 

Moreover the display is fully integrated within the design of the dashboard, thanks to the innovative optical construction of the clear black plastic mask that is coupled with the TFT display through a process of "optical bonding". This procedure consists of a peculiar bonding of two surfaces which, allowing more effective filtering of the light, results in increased brightness and readability of a display. This technology thus provides a "total black" curve mask that is aesthetically harmonised with the car dashboard. In practice, from the user's perspective, the image of the display appears on the surface of the dashboard with an excellent level of viewing and contrast.

 

With regard to lighting systems, Magneti Marelli has collaborated with Alfa Romeo to produce the headlamps and rear lamps of the Giulia, distinctive and characteristic design elements of the car. The Giulia Quadrifoglio headlamps are made with Xenon technology equipped with AFS (Adaptive Frontlight System) technology and with a 35W lighting module, a solution that increases the lighting capability by 200% compared to standard halogen headlamps, thus ensuring greater safety when driving. The LED technology is adopted for position lights, DRL (Daytime Running Light), cornering lights and for the indicators. The LED rear tail lights, a synthesis of stylistic and technological excellence, identify the rear of the car uniquely and distinctively, further enhancing the straight and dynamic line of the car.

 

Magneti Marelli produced the components of the front and rear suspensions, the exhaust system, the pedal board and the plastic parts .

This is an illustration for a tutorial about lighting I'm writing, as you can guess from my latest photos.

Light: a power saving bulb 32W over it, and a battery torch/flashlight aimed to the reflector. The lamp itself is turned off, but the effect is nice.

A solution of iodine shows different colors depending on the solvent it is dissolved in. In alcohol it's the familiar dark brown of tincture of iodine. In heptane, it's purple, identical to the color of iodine vapor.

Wonderful method to find the best focus position, but only for B&W :-)

I received these little buggers yesterday. LED replacements for the olskool halogen 21/5watt lightbulbs (brake lights). These should be a lot brighter than the SMD LEDs I had before.

 

I will post some before and after pics later. First impressions are good! They seem a lot brighter than their 21watt halogen counterparts.

also hier zugegebenermaßen vielleicht maximaler schwierigkeitsgrad. befindet sich an der decke eines öffentlich zugänglichen raumes.

Steel string guitar finger picks, bought to try to get the best tone out of my resonator guitar. Unlike most picks these are unusually designed with cut out sections to hybrid the sound of skin, finger nails and steel on the strings.

 

The stack of finger picks were balanced on a mirror and lit with a flash from my Metz 45 through a white brolly, high camera left. A maglite torch was used to fill in the right. The colours are the result of the different colour temperatures of the Metz's flash bulb and the maglite's halogen bulb.

I got the irrits with shadows and gloominess of the original halogen spotlights in the kitchen and installed some super-efficient LED strips in suitable covers over the ceiling ... it might not win an architectural award but it's very effective! (Note to anyone else thinking of the same ... always get warm white, and buy direct from China to save money, a lot of money. Not something I'd normally promote since I believe in supporting what remains of Australian manufacturing, but these would all be made in China anyway and they cost me about a third of the Australian price :) :( )

 

More exactly you need good quality LEDs in the strip with high Colour Rendition Index (CRI). These are Samsung 5630s. 5050 type LEDs won't be bright enough and most have very poor CRI. There are some awful LEDs out there, you need to do your homework at the moment, although things will improve with time.

 

This little installation is more than twice as bright as 150W of halogen, and uses a third of the power.

Using Halogen based non projector headlights, we painted all pieces black, including the high beam housing since it is no longer needed. The new projector does low and high beam function. RGB Angel Eyes are controlled via RF Remote, and DRL Strip is wiring into the parking lights.

Watching these crystals magically appear as the purple iodine vapor condenses and disappears is a wonderful sight, You never know what sort of crystals you'll get, and they have a beautiful dark grey luster.

Iodine vapor is a transparent purple gas, one of the nicest purples around. Iodine crystals melted in a glass tube produced this sample , and quickly crystallized out as the tube cooled.

To bring this series of shots of matches to an end, I have got rid of the flash and instead using a 15W halogen desklamp. Not so easy to control so a different approach to the setup.

Working in a cofined space like I am, one of the most important elements, is maintaining the black background. For this I used a sheet of black foamcore placed behind the light to shield it from the background. Also note the white reflector to the left which is angled slightly for the same purpose.

I hope it shows here how black the background behind the match is despite only being a few inches behind.

One problem I wasnt expecting, was that light hitting the base of the glass used to hold the match, was refracting light back onto the background. Easily solved with a small piece of black card behind it.

 

Some may be wondering about the candle in front of the base of the lamp. My preferred way of lighting the match is to use a taper, usually a toothpic/cocktail stick or a bamboo kebab skewer. That way I can take the flame to the match to ignite it from below and it's easy to move out of the way quickly to take the shot, not quite so important with the much slower pace using the continuous light here with it's much slower shutter speeds.

This was one with the TUNGSTEN/HALOGEN hot lights. It was initially a discard from my setup shots, because on the left is the shot straight out of the camera. Notice that (with the "HOT LIGHTS") it needs to be white Balanced, which shooting in CR2 mode (versus JPG) will allow you to do in post if you don't do it 'in-camera.' The heat also causes the talent's skin to get a bit shiny.

 

The middle is what many would do for a retouch. On the surface, it doesn't look bad, but the skin looks like it was 'sandblasted,' or over processed to look almost "plastic." It is a bit "heavy handed." Many agents may look at this as askance.

 

On the right is a more moderated approach. Instead of smoothening-- the frequency separation action was applied and used. Some of the stray hairs were removed, but others strategically left in. While it may benefit from some further retouching, in general it is a more believable product.

Two photographs of diffraction grating spectra of an unfiltered tungsten halogen. This emits a spectrum close to that of a blackbody (Planck) source with a colour temperature of close to 2800K which is rich in near infrared radiation.

 

Both photographs are taken with a ‘full-spectrum’ converted Sony alpha 7R II camera. The left frame is through an external Kolari Vision ‘hot-mirror’ filter which restores the camera to normal colour imaging. The right frame has the filter removed to provide a wide spectrum image limited by the spectral sensitivity of the back-illuminated CMOS sensor of this camera.

 

The blazed reflection grating is shown at the top left of the frames and this is illuminated from the bottom right. The zeroth order (undispersed) reflection is towards the upper right. The reddish cast of the right image is due to the fact that all the pixels of the Bayer mask covering the sensor transmit some near-infrared light beyond our visible range. In addition to the red cast, it is apparent that the red sector is very much broader than on the left hand visible light image.

Take two lights, add a third light that has never been turned on. Angle said third light until you realize that it looks far cooler than you thought. Realize that halogen bulbs are awesome. Release shutter, blow exposure. Rinse and repeat until golden brown and delicious.

 

Okay, it wasn't that hard. but the colors, kids, the colors! I had a lot of fun shooting this bulb as it really started to pop for me. Before too long, I was trying to maximize detail and colors into one whole image.

Unit #458, belonging to the Cranberry Township Police Department. This 2012 Chevy Caprice with a 6.0L V8. This is the last unit with the department with the old skin. Equipped with a Federal Signal Valor, single halogen spotlight, and a Pro Gard push bumper. This is their oldest unit, and is the next one to go.

Decided to trade the Golf MK3 GTI with this deluxe Volvo S80. The Golf had some serious rust issues on the bottom, which would cost more than the swap I performed with the Volvo.

 

Its a big car, but feels very nimble and has a lot of luxury.

I love IKEA, and the love affair is ancient. I lived in the Washington DC area when the store opened in Potomac Mills. Much of the furnishings in my post-college flats was IKEA stuff. And why not? It was cheap, looked OK, and was very serviceable. The rocking chair we bought when my son was born was the iconic IKEA POÄNG chair. I still had it 12 years later and except for some grime from heavy use, it was perfectly good.

 

When Jamie and I decided that we needed more storage, IKEA was the natural choice. I live 5 minutes from the Houston store, for goodness sake! We got the Billy bookshelf system, and it looks great.

 

This weekend, we went and bought some storage items, notably the magazine holders. Finally, we'll be able to put away much of the stuff that litter my life. I'm sure Jamie is ecstatic.

 

So go ahead, search my stream for IKEA. You'll see just how much it plays a part in my life.

Lighting is mainly via my — what else? — IKEA halogen desk lamp. The 430EX is to photo right, slightly closer to the camera than I am, and shrouded by the mylar origami diffuser. It gives a little light (1/32 power) to illuminate the magazines and soften the shadows. Oh yeah, I used the cheap eBay remote and IR trigger too. The Strobist group is invaluable for off-camera flash ideas.
