Alexander Liberman's Aria. The Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park is a 158-acre (64 ha) botanical garden and outdoor sculpture park. It has a rather huge tropical conservatory, extensive Japanese garden, and winding paths that combine the natural and the art world by mixing the Meijers' sculpture collection into the garden landscape. Carhenge was built by Jim Reinders as a memorial to his father and dedicated during the June, 1987 eclipse. It replicates Stonehenge, but also incluces an adjacent "auto-art" park. The auto-art features a station wagon repurposed into an homage to the wagons which brought the settlers west and a a peice called "The Fourd Seasons," five vertical cars (two are welded together, end to end) representing the seasons in Nebraska. Built in 1858, this house was operated as boarding house in the late 18th century, and naval hero John Paul Jones resided here from 1781 - 1782. This is the only structure in the U.S. associated with Jones' life. Portsmouth, New Hampshire. (Nathanael Miller, 31 July 2018)

I lived in Tallahassee from 1992 - 1997. I interned at the Museum of Florida History in 1994, and then got my first post-FSU job there from 1994 - 1995 when budget cuts slashed a number of state jobs. The museum was opened in 1977 and is housed in the R. A. Gray Building behind the state capitol. One of my early jobs was cataloguing and recording the condition of several Civil War flags before sending them for conservation, the most rare being the 5th Florida regimental flag. Other exhibits I regularly cleaned, such as the case for the builder's model of the battleship USS Florida and citrus packing house. Albus the Crab checks out the covered bridge. Built in 1845, the bridge originally spanned the Lamoille River in northern Vermont. It features a structure of parallel-chord trusses and arches patented by Theodore Burr. It was moved to the museum in 1971. A museum of art, design, and Americana, the Shelburne Museum maintains a large campus that displays many historic buildings along with the vast art collection. Shelburne, Vermont. Maverick, a bald eagle. He was found in Wisconsin, his left wing broken and crippled. Unable to fly, he came to the aquarium in 2014 becuase he can no longer fly. The Perseid meteor shower creates streaks over Devils Tower while the planet Mars glows as a bright red "star" right next to the tower. Devils Tower is an igneous formation standing 867 feet (265 m) from summit to base. It is the erosional remnant of an ancient volcanic system dating form over 50 million agos. Devils Tower was the first declared national monument (declared by Pres. Theodore Roosevelt in 1906). It was made famous in the 1979 film " Close Encounters of the Third Kind." It is also a VERY sacred place to the people of many of the first nations across the northern American west, so be respectful when you visit. The Museum of Idaho had its genesis in the 1898 ladies' Village Improvement Society club. The museum tells the storhy of Idaho from prehistory through the present day. It's current temporary exhibit is the world premier of Bruce Rosenbaum's Steampunk artwork, honoring such visonaries and inventors as Mary Shelly, Jan Ernst Matzeliger, George Eastman, Jules Verne, and H.G. Mount Rainier's southern face from Paradise. The volcano continues to rise for more than 9,000 feet to the summit. The Paradise area, located at an elevation of 5,400 feet, is one of the most famous and visited areas of Mount Rainier National Park. Mount Rainier the highest peak of the Cascade volcanoes, rising 14,411 feet above sea level. It is also considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in North America. Built in 1807, the Portland Observatory is the only known maritime signaling tower left in the United States. Observers used both a telescope and signal flags to establish two-way communication with incoming ships several hours before the vessels tied up. Shipping companies paid a fee to store their signal flags in the tower in order to communicate with their ships as those vessels hove into sight. Portland, Maine. (Nathanael Miller, 24 July 2018)

Underside of the Barrackville Covered Bridge, 1853. A modified Burr Truss arch, the bridge is 145 feet and spans Buffalo Creek. Confederate General William E. Jones nearly burned it during his April 1863 raid into then-northern Virginia (prior to West Virginia breaking way), but Confederate loyalists William and Dolly Ice of Ice's Mill convinced him to spare it. Today traffic is routed past it on a modern bridge, but Barrackville Bridge is a rare bridge that is still capable of carrying vehicular traffic with no modern undergirding to reinforce it. The abandoned and crumbling power house ovder the Little Patuxent River at historic Savage Mill has been left to ruin even as the rest of the mill was reborn as a unique shopping center. Savage Mill started life in 1821 as a cotton mill in Savage, Maryland. (Nathanael Miller. 05 May 2018)

Volunteer Bob Trimpl leads a tour of the home of Benjamin Harrison, 23rd presdient of the United States (in office from 1889 - 1893). Most of the house is occupied by furniture and aritifacts that belonged to the Harrison family. The Clement Oak has been alive since the late 16th century. It was also the site of the landing of the first aerial flight in America. President George Washington watched as Jean-Pierre Blanchard took off in a balloon from Philadelphia. Blanchard carried a letter from President Washington to be delivered to whomever owned the property where the balloon landed, thus making this the first delivery of air mail as well. Founded in 1962, the Maine Maritime Museum preserves the five remaining buildings of the historic Percy and Small Shipyard on the Kennebec River next to the Bath Iron Works. The museum boasts a life-sized, stylized sculpture of the Wyoming, the largest schooner ever built, located on the site where the Wyoming was constructed. It also features an art gallery, displays in the historic buildings detailing ship construction, and a scale-model demonstration of ship launching techniques. Bath, Maine. USS Arizona (BB 39). Arizona was hit by an armor-piercing bomb that detonated her forward magazines during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. The ship exploded, killing 1,177 of the 1,512 sailors on board at the time (about half of the lives lost during the attack). Of these dead, 1,102 are still aboard. Arizona was commissioned in 1916 and decommssioned in 1942. The memorial was built in 1962 and is visited by about 2 million people annually. Honolulu, Hawaii. (Nathanael Miller. 20 April 2018)

The Sand Springs Pony Express Station was one of the 184 stations at which riders switched to fresh horses. The Pony Express ran from 1860 - 1861 before being supplanted by the first transcontinental telegraph. Fallon, Nevada. (Nathanael Miller, 13 Oct. 2018)

Ranger Albert Carter explains the climatic action that resulted in the capture of the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Court House. Established in 1935, the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park preserves the site of the surrender of Robert E. Lee to Ulysses S. Grant in April 1865. Appomattox, Virginia. A visitor reads a history of FDR's funeral while the "Unfinished Portrait" hangs behind him--this is the portrait being painted when FDR suffered a stroke and died. FDR came to Warm Springs in 1924 seeking therapy in the natural warm springs as he worked to recover from polio. His "Little White House" was built in 1932 and he used it as a retreat while president, and died in the house in April 1945. Warm Springs, Georgia. (Nathanael Miller, 17 March 2018)

The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument preserves the 1876 field the Battle of Little Bighorn was fought over. The battle was the single greatest victory of the Indians during the Sioux War and saw George Custer and the 7th Cavalry decimated. Today the field is marked with white marble markers to show where known 7th Cavalry soldiers fell, and red granite markers to show where known Indian warriors fell. The 7th Cavalry remains were mostly interred under the monument on Last Stand Hill, but most of the officers (including Custer) were laid to rest elsewhere in the country. Crow Agency, Montana. Austin Lantz leads a tour of the Oliver Mansion, originally named Copshaholm, was completed in 1896 by Joseph D. Oliver, head of the Oliver Chilled Plow Works and designer of the revolutionary chilled plow. It's a 38-room Romanesque Queen Anne house designed by architect Charles Alonzo Rich. Governors Bridge over the Patuxent River in Bowie, Maryland. Built in 1907, the bridge is known as "Crybaby Bridge" due to stories the ghostly wails of an infant killed in the river here back in the 1950s. This bridge is one of Maryland's more famous haunted sites. Bowie, Maryland (Nathanael Miller, 19 January 2018)

Looking aft from the bow over the remains of the Confederate ram CSS Jackson. The ship was commissioned in Dec. 1864, but was still being fitted out when captured and burned in the Chattahoochee River by Union forces in April 1865. The ship's wreckage was raised in the 1960s. Originally founded in 1962, the museum relocated to the present facility in 2001. It is the only civil war museum in the nation exclusively dedicated to the story of the Union and Confederate navies. Tripoli Monument, carved in 1806 in Italy it's the oldest military monument in the U.S. and is dedicated to the Sailors who fought the First Barbary War (1801-1805). United States Naval Academy. Annapolis, Maryland. (Nathanael Miller, 14 Jan. 2018)

The Quarterdeck flags and well deck fragment from USS Ponce (LPD 15) with the bust of Admiral Joseph J. "Jocko" Clark. Clark, a Cherokee native, was the first Native American to graduate from Annapolis and was one of Admiral Marc Mitscher's most trusted task group commanders during World War II. The Cherokee National Heritage Center is built on the site of the Cherokee Female Seminary (three columns of which are still standing at the center's entrance). The seminary builiding was opened in 1851 and burnt down in 1887. The modern heritage center tells the story of the Cherokee Nation, with an emphasis on the Trail of Tears' impact on the Cherokee and other nations. Ponce was in commission from 1971 - 2017. Founded in 1881 by 17-year-old Albert Friedrich. Friedrich took antlers in exchange for drinks during the saloon's early days. Teddy Roosevelt frequented the Buckhorn while mobilizing for the Spanish-American War, and his bison horn chair and field desk are on display.
