The Quarterdeck flags and well deck fragment from USS Ponce (LPD 15) with the bust of Admiral Joseph J. "Jocko" Clark. Clark, a Cherokee native, was the first Native American to graduate from Annapolis and was one of Admiral Marc Mitscher's most trusted task group commanders during World War II. The Cherokee National Heritage Center is built on the site of the Cherokee Female Seminary (three columns of which are still standing at the center's entrance). The seminary builiding was opened in 1851 and burnt down in 1887. The modern heritage center tells the story of the Cherokee Nation, with an emphasis on the Trail of Tears' impact on the Cherokee and other nations. Ponce was in commission from 1971 - 2017. Founded in 1881 by 17-year-old Albert Friedrich. Friedrich took antlers in exchange for drinks during the saloon's early days. Teddy Roosevelt frequented the Buckhorn while mobilizing for the Spanish-American War, and his bison horn chair and field desk are on display. "Smoke writing" from the past century. A tallow candle was used to make dots of smoke to form the letters. Mammoth Cave is the longest known cave system in the world with over 400 miles of tunnels mapped. It was carved over over millions of years by the underground Styx and Echo rivers, which empty into the Green River. It was first discovered 6,000 years ago by Native Americans and has been integral to Kentucky history ever since. (Nathanael Miller, 12 Dec. 2017)

The Crazy Horse Memorial is being carved in the Black Hills of South Dakota. When finished, it is on track to be the largest sculpture in the world. It was begun in 1948 and is being done entirely with private money. Crazy Horse, South Dakota. (Nathanael Miller, 13 Aug. 2018)

Spanning the Colorado River between Nevada and Arizona, Hoover Dam creates Lake Meade and is one of the key electrical power and irrigation facilities in the southwestern U.S. Completed in 1936, the dam is 726 feet high and holds back about 10 trillion gallons of water. The Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge was completed in 2010 to eliminate the traffic bottleneck on the dam, and is the second-highest bridge in the U.S. Hoover Dam, Nevada-Arizona. The Pacific Aviation Museum occupies historic spaces on Ford Island in Pearl Harbor. Its most iconic structure is the old Ford Island Control Tower. The tower was under construction when Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1941. Exhibits include the wreckage of a Japanese plane that crashed on the Island of Ni'ihau, one of only two fixed-wing Wildcats, and a civilian plane that was caught in the middle of the Japanese formations as they approached Pearl Harbor. Elkhorn is a real-live dead Old West mining ghost town. Established in 1872, the town boomed during the 1890s and died when the mine played out and the railroad left in the 20th century. Two structures, Gillian and Fraternity Halls, are maintained as part of Elkhorn State Park (both built in the 1890s). Many of the graves in the cemetery are of children killed by a late 19th century diptheria outbreak. There are about a dozen people still living there today. Elkhorn, Montana. Albus with a 50-foot statue of the Lombardi Trophy at Lambeau Field, home of the champion Green Bay Packers. Opening in 1957, the ever-evolving venue is the oldest continually operating football statdium in the NFL, and even features the giant Lombardi Trophy. Green Bay, Wisconsin. Sand Mountain is lit up at night by the lights of all-terrain vehicles. Sand Mountain is a dune two miles long and 600 feet high. It was formed from beach sand left behind by preshistoric Lake Lahontan. It is a "singing" dune in that the the sands set up a resonance when the wind is right. Fallon, Nevada. Albus sees the sights! Springfield has its share of odd sights along the road. You might bump into an old, damaged green elephant advertising a defunct record store, a pink elephant with a giant martini, or even a 30-foot tall statue of young Abe Lincoln at the state fair grounds. Albus the Crab dives into some blue corn tortilla enchiladas at the High Noon Restaurant. The front part of the High Noon Restaurant and Saloon was built in 1750, making it one of the oldest structures in old town Albuquerque. For 40 years the restaurant's Christmas tree has been hung upside down in order to keep from taking up floor space while maintaining a festive atmosphere. The High Noon is also reputed to be a very haunted building. Haunted or not, the food is excellent! (Nathanael Miller. 03 Jan. 2019)

Giant milk can building in Manville / North Smithfield (sort of on the edge of both). It was built in 1929 in Lincoln, Rhode Island, as an ice cream place called "The Milk Can," but went out business in 1968. It was bought and moved to its present location on Highway 146 on the outskirts of Manville and North Smithfield by 1991. Ground water problems have so far prevented it from being re-opened. Hollywood, our tour guide from the Yankee Freedom III. A brilliant storyteller! Fort Jefferson on Garden Key in the Dry Tortugas. Fort Jefferson is the largest, most powerful masonry fort in the entire United States and was designed to maintain control of the entry way (and some nearby deep water anchorages) to the Gulf of Mexico. Built from 1846 - 1975 out of more than 16 million bricks, it was never finished. Dr. Samuel Mudd was held here for nearly four years after setting the broken legg of John Wilkes Boothe following the assasination of President Lincoln. Nearly 70 miles west of Key West, the Dry Tortugas mark the end of the third largest barrier reef in the world. (Nathanael Miller, 26 July 2017)

Bannack State Park preserves the ghost town of Bannack. Bannack was founded in 1862 and was the first gold-rush boom town in Montana. Bannack lasted through World War II before finally beginning to die out. The state park pretty much "freezes" the town in time after the last few residents left the old ghost town in the 1970s. World's largest ball of string. 42 feet in circumference and weighing 6 tons. Ripley's Believe It or Not, or Ripley's Odditorium, is a museum of curiosities that is part of the Ripley's chain around the world. This particular building is built to look like it was fractured by an earthquake along the nearby New Madrid faultline like the ones that hit hte area in 1811 and 1812. Branson, Missouri. Roberts Covered Bridge, 1829. This bridge has several points of significance. It is the oldest covered bridge in Ohio, and the only remaining double-barreled (dual-wagon way) bridge in Ohio. It is the only surviving example of a Burr Truss bridge in Ohio, and it is the oldest of the six remaining double-barreled covered bridges in the U.S. Built by Orlistus Roberts, it originally spanned Seven Mile Creek on his property. The last horse-drawn buggy built by Studebaker--a 1919 "Izzer" buggy. The Studebaker National Museum opened in its current location in 2005. The Dayton Cyclery pavillon. In 1892 the Davis Sewing Machine Company began building bicycles (and later changed its name to "Huffy"). "A Carillon Christmas" at Carillon Historical Park. The park features exhibits and buildings telling the story of Dayton from 1796 to the present day. Among the exhibits house on the park grounds are the Wright Flyer III from 1905, a section and lock from the old Miami and Eerie Canal, and a massive collection of cash registers (the cash register was invented in Dayton in 1879). I interned at the Museum of Florida History in 1994, and then got my first post-FSU job there from 1994 - 1995 when budget cuts slashed a number of state jobs. The museum was opened in 1977 and is housed in the R. A. Gray Building behind the state capitol. One of my early jobs was cataloguing and recording the condition of several Civil War flags before sending them for conservation, the most rare being the 5th Florida regimental flag. Other exhibits I regularly cleaned, such as the case for the builder's model of the battleship USS Florida and citrus packing house. Wild turkeys roam the woods at Cowpens National Battlefield. Established in 1929, Cowpens National Battlefield preserves the land American Brig. General Daniel Morgan clocked the daylights out of a superior British force under Lt. Col. Banastre Tarleton Jan. 17, 1781, during the British' Southern Campaign. The battle was a signficant American victory and helped put British General Lord Cornwalllis on the path that eventually led to Yorktown The battle was named for the field which farmers used to pen cattle while fattening them up prior to sending them to market in Charleston. Pikes Peak reaches a height of 14,115 feat, though its summit can be blocked by early winter storms due ot its extreme height.
