The new Tennessee State Museum building opened in October 2018. Telling the story of the Tennessee from prehistoric times through the modern era, its vast collection is well worth a visit. Featured artifacts include one of Daniel Boone's rifles; a rare 13-star U.S. flag with the original 6-pointed stars first mandated by Congress before the flag was changed to 5-pointed stars; a coat made by future-president Andrew Johnson when he was still a tailor; chairs used during Civil Rights sit-ins; and outfits and instruments used by Dolly Parton, Tina Turner, Elvis Presley, and Johnny Cash. Designed in 1881 by Elijah E. Myers, it was constructed from 1882 to 1888 by civil engineer Reuben Lindsay Walker and is clad in native Texas red granite. The full-scale replica of the ancient Athenian Parthenon is the only building left in Centennial Park from the 1897 Tennessee Centennial and International Exposition. Originally built of plaster for the expostion, it was rebuilt out of concrete in the 1920s to create a more durable structure. Bannack State Park preserves the ghost town of Bannack. Bannack was founded in 1862 and was the first gold-rush boom town in Montana. Bannack lasted through World War II before finally beginning to die out. The state park pretty much "freezes" the town in time after the last few residents left the old ghost town in the 1970s. Fort Donelson was captured by Ulysses S. Grant in February 1862. It was the third of three Confederates forts Grant targeted, and the most significant as it opened all of middle Tennessee and the Cumberland to Union control. It was Grant's first major campaign, and it won him national fame. This was also the first of three Confederate armies Grant was to capture during the war (he captured more whole armies than any other Union general). Dover, Tennessee. It is the only musuem dedicated primarily to the armaments carried by the Air Force, and boasts a collection of over 30 aircraft (U.S. and a few foreign), as well as hundreds of examples of munitions used by aerial warfare through history. Sand Mountain is a dune two miles long and 600 feet high. It was formed from beach sand left behind by preshistoric Lake Lahontan. It is a "singing" dune in that the the sands set up a resonance when the wind is right. Fallon, Nevada. (Nathanael Miller, 13 Oct. 2018)

Four-image composite panorama looking aft down the port side of the remains of the Confederate ram CSS Jackson. The ship was commissioned in Dec. 1864, but was still being fitted out when captured and burned in the Chattahoochee River by Union forces in April 1865. The ship's wreckage was raised in the 1960s. Originally founded in 1962, the museum relocated to the present facility in 2001. It is the only civil war museum in the nation exclusively dedicated to the story of the Union and Confederate navies. USS Oklahoma (BB 37) was capsized and sunk at Pearl Harbor during the 1941 attack. 429 sailors died. The ship was righted and refloated, but declared a total loss. She was under tow to the mainland U.S. for scrapping in 1947 when the hulk sank in a storm at sea. The memorial at her berthing spot on Ford Island was dedicated in 2007. Oklahoma was commissioned in 1916 and not decommsioned until 1944, nearly three years after being capsized. Honolulu, Hawaii. (Nathanael Miller. 20 April 2018)

The Bollman Truss Railroad Bridge across the Little Patuxent River was completed in 1869. It is the only surviving example of the Bollman Truss, and is one of the oldest standing railroad bridges in the United States. Today a foot bridge carrying the Savage Mill Trail, it originally served by carrying a railroad spur to Savage Mill. Savage, Maryland. (Nathanael Miller. 05 May 2018)

Mammoth Cave is the longest known cave system in the world with over 400 miles of tunnels mapped. It was carved over over millions of years by the underground Styx and Echo rivers, which empty into the Green River. It was first discovered 6,000 years ago by Native Americans and has been integral to Kentucky history ever since. (Nathanael Miller, 12 Dec. 2017)

I lived in Tallahassee from 1992 - 1997. I interned at the Museum of Florida History in 1994, and then got my first post-FSU job there from 1994 - 1995 when budget cuts slashed a number of state jobs. The museum was opened in 1977 and is housed in the R. A. Gray Building behind the state capitol. One of my early jobs was cataloguing and recording the condition of several Civil War flags before sending them for conservation, the most rare being the 5th Florida regimental flag. Other exhibits I regularly cleaned, such as the case for the builder's model of the battleship USS Florida and citrus packing house. The experiemental submarine USS Albacore (AGSS 569) on permanent display at Portsmouth. The Albacore was the test bed for numerous submarine technologies, most notably the tear-drop shaped hull for high speed underwater.
