Loved every minute of "Our Adventures on the NCT". We are already planning more hiking on the NCT for the summer of 2017! Thanks for the Challenge! It got us out there! The river in the photo is the Temperance River. We winter tent camped there on our hike thru (Pic taken Nov. 19th 2016).

There were hikes ranging from the MRT/NCT loop, the Jordan River Trail loop (many many times!), as well as the UP walking through the Lake Superior SFCG (also my favorite place to camp). Being back in the light of backpacking/hiking has really been a great way to unwind from the ills of the world. There's such beauty across this trail, even when it takes you through small village towns. It's nice to see such a variety of scenery and a great place to call "home".

Just a few thoughts about my hikes on the North Country Trail: I feel so blessed to live where such a beautiful trail is available for all of us. I have hiked in the UP twice this year in different places along the trail and several places in the lower part of the state. The work that is done by the volunteers is super; I will be one next year! At 77 I cherish each mile I get to do. I daily thank the Lord for creating such beauty for us to enjoy, and I thank him that I was able to hike over 1,700 miles so far this year. Blessings!

Chubby cheeks on our walk today. I love living in a town where you run into the same people on a regular basis, WITHOUT preplanning anything. #girdwood #alaska #getoutside #babysamspam

I enjoy hiking especially with my sister, Jennifer and the many friends I have encountered while hiking the FLT. It's like a mini adventure each time. I don't have any exceptional stories to tell really but I do enjoy taking photos on the trail and have accumulated many to document my time spent on the FLT. Just want to really just thank those who keep these trails well maintained and to the leaders and sweeps who have guided us through the trails. Thank you!

In 2006 I Googled “places to hike in the northeast Ohio/Northwest PA”. The NCT came up & looked good, particularly the Allegheny NF section. I scheduled a weekend trip and was hooked; I had to return for more hiking and soon. That year I completed the section through Allegany SP in NY through Allegheny NF & Cooks Forest SP. I have repeated that hike a few times since and hike the ANF or most of it every year. I since have hiked the entire PA section, some of NY, the MI LP from the Manistee NF border through Wilderness SP. I have hiked the trail in the MI UP from the Hiawatha NF boundary to Pictured Rocks NL. Lots of other hiking & other obligations have slowed my progress some, but the hike I did this year (a re-hike through the east section of Hiawatha NF, Tahquamenon Falls SP & Lake Superior State Forest plus part of Allegheny NF) re-kindled my desire to complete the whole trail. That weekend trip in 2006 changed my life for the better in so many ways. The NCT has a special meaning to me.

We began hiking the trail in March, starting at the 'endpoint' at the visitor’s center in Lake Sakakawea State Park, and just completed our 100 miles for 2016 near the McCluskey canal. During the intervening months, we hiked a total of 14 times, mostly in North Dakota but also in Minnesota along Lake Superior. We're both soil scientists and have a passion for soil and its stewardship. To document soils along the trail, we started a blog highlighting the soil types we encountered during each of our 14 hikes (nctsoils.blogspot.com/). Feel free to share if you find the blog interesting. We'll be adding to it in the future with each completed hike.

I participated in the Cross County FLTC series. We hiked Cattaraugus County and ended up at the Pennsylvania State line. We celebrated the accomplishment in Allegany State Park at Camp Turner. The pictures attached are from a hike in November I led with the Foothills Trail Club.

Each October, my friend John and I hike a section of the NCT. We try to get in around 100 miles per year. This year, I hiked 95 miles on the NCT segment stretching from the west end of the McCormick Wilderness to where the trail crosses M-45. It took seven days to complete the segment, and I would compare it's difficulty to any hike I've done in the US, including hiking the John Muir Trail. The UP has very rugged terrain, and while we would average 20 miles/day on any of our NCT hikes between the Ohio border and Munising, west of Munising a 15 mile day is a struggle. The bedrock in this area is very close, if not above, the surface, making building tread near impossible in areas. The footing, as a result, is challenging along many areas, to say the least. In addition to enjoying the NCT for long distance hikes, I am also a trail maintainer. This year, I hiked an additional 52 miles while volunteering along the trail.

I live in Michigan's Lower Peninsula with two awesome German Shorthaired Pointers. We love the Upper Peninsula and spending time out in the woods exploring all that our beautiful state has to offer. I found that I missed the time we spent in nature whenever I was away from the UP and used this challenge to find new areas to explore when I couldn't make it to the UP. And of course, some of our miles were logged while visiting the UP as well. What I loved about doing this is that I discovered small towns, farmlands, and beautiful wooded areas that I never would have explored without this challenge. I was joined along the way by both of my girls as well as dogs that I foster for a local rescue. Many miles were completed with 2 or 3 dogs along for the fun and my 13 year old pup, Imke, joined me for all 100 miles. It was an adventure I will never forget!

We have a group of women, all from different backgrounds but share a love of the outdoors. We have hiked, CC skied, snow shoe and backpacked all over MI. Our group started as 3 and one dog 10 years ago and now have up to 12 for our adventures, along with two dogs. This year, most of us took on the 100 mile challenge. Many of us finished our 100 mile challenge on Sept 30th at our fall backpacking trip in the Craig Lake Wilderness area in the UP of MI.

I started 2016 with a short jaunt snowshoeing a section north of Petoskey in January and slowly added miles on weekend outings through spring, summer and fall. After a great section hike in Hiawatha National Forest in Michigan's upper peninsula in September, I added up the miles I had logged on the NCT surprised to realize I had 129 miles of the NCT under my feet in 2016.

I was introduced to the NCT and the 100 mile challenge back in the summer but it wasn't until the end of October that I persuaded my friend, Steve, into completing the challenge with me. In 2 months we crammed the 100 miles into 17 individual hikes. We each have dogs; at least one of them accompanied us in 16 out of the 17 trips and at times the entire pack joined the fun. Most of our hikes took place in Ohio but on one occasion we did venture up to Michigan and learned a few things in the process: 1. Squaw-field was the site of the last camp of Pottawatomie Indians in Michigan before moving to Iowa 2. Always wear bright colors when hiking in a game preserve during hunting season! It was a great challenge. Our only regret was not beginning sooner so we would have had an opportunity to visit more of the trail in other states...perhaps in 2017.

My friend, John, and I did our first hike on May 15th and completed our 21st hike yesterday. We've hiked 190 miles with 27,000 feet of elevation gain. All along the NCT / Finger Lakes Trail / OCT (Onondaga County Trail). Without question the best hiking season I've ever had, the trail designers are super heroes in my book!
