I live in Michigan's Lower Peninsula with two awesome German Shorthaired Pointers. We love the Upper Peninsula and spending time out in the woods exploring all that our beautiful state has to offer. I found that I missed the time we spent in nature whenever I was away from the UP and used this challenge to find new areas to explore when I couldn't make it to the UP. And of course, some of our miles were logged while visiting the UP as well. What I loved about doing this is that I discovered small towns, farmlands, and beautiful wooded areas that I never would have explored without this challenge. I was joined along the way by both of my girls as well as dogs that I foster for a local rescue. Many miles were completed with 2 or 3 dogs along for the fun and my 13 year old pup, Imke, joined me for all 100 miles. It was an adventure I will never forget!
I'm a 67 year old semi-retired man who has fallen in love with hiking. I began backpacking three years ago after having a hip replaced. Started hiking the Georgia section of the Appalachian Trail and have since hiked in southern North Carolina and northern Tennessee into southern Virginia. Learned about the NCT from another friend and decided to explore the Michigan sections where I live. Imagine my surprise when I discovered a beautiful section of the trail just 20 miles from my home! A day hike with my dog in the Pittsford State Game area convinced me that further exploration of the trail was in my future. Then I learned that the National Parks initiated the Hike 100 Challenge. Three hikes later, I and my 70 year old friend, Bob, completed our hundred miles on the NCT. Though perhaps a small accomplishment, it's a GREAT discovery! We're already planning our 2017 hikes... northern Tennessee on the AT and lots of hikes right here in Michigan on the NCT. We are now members of the NCT.

I was introduced to the NCT and the 100 mile challenge back in the summer but it wasn't until the end of October that I persuaded my friend, Steve, into completing the challenge with me. In 2 months we crammed the 100 miles into 17 individual hikes. We each have dogs; at least one of them accompanied us in 16 out of the 17 trips and at times the entire pack joined the fun. Most of our hikes took place in Ohio but on one occasion we did venture up to Michigan and learned a few things in the process: 1. Squaw-field was the site of the last camp of Pottawatomie Indians in Michigan before moving to Iowa 2. Always wear bright colors when hiking in a game preserve during hunting season! It was a great challenge. Our only regret was not beginning sooner so we would have had an opportunity to visit more of the trail in other states...perhaps in 2017.
While I had actually completed the "Hike 100" challenge shortly after the end of snowshoeing season in March (and several times over since), I challenged myself to hike 100 "new" miles, heading west out of Munising. I appreciated the varied terrain in this area, the commitment of the local chapter volunteers, and the knowledge they have of their Trail territory. They were a great resource! Looking forward to what's in the next 100...!
Photo taken on day three of our backpack along the Wokkpash Loop in the Stone Mountain Provincial Park/Northern Rocky Mountain Provincial Park. This day we started just below the large narrow Wokkpash Lake and hiked to ranger cabin at the end of the lake.

There were hikes ranging from the MRT/NCT loop, the Jordan River Trail loop (many many times!), as well as the UP walking through the Lake Superior SFCG (also my favorite place to camp). Being back in the light of backpacking/hiking has really been a great way to unwind from the ills of the world. There's such beauty across this trail, even when it takes you through small village towns. It's nice to see such a variety of scenery and a great place to call "home".
I flew in from Boston and hiked 100 miles in 8 days with my Michigan sister-in-law and cousin from San Diego. It was a wonderful family experience! It was hard and I had never done anything like this. We had a great time and I'm so proud to tell people of our accomplishment.
I did 100 miles of the trail in 3 consecutive days, going from Marshall, MI to Lowell, MI. It was great fun! Thanx so much for all y'all do!
Prior to Sept 2016 I had hiked 14+ miles in Lake County, MI. When I started out for the meeting in Fargo, I was determined to finish the 100 miles. I saw many spectacular waterfalls and trails while crossing the Upper Peninsula of MI. On to WI, MN and ND, including my hikes during the Annual Conference. Five Days at Itasca State Park, MN included hiking on the trail every day. During my return trip, I hiked in OH, PA and NY. I even went to VT, crossing the bridge at Crown Point. Finally, yesterday, I concluded my 100 miles with a walk along the Hudson River near North Creek, NY. So happy to have finished.

Late last night, perhaps around 11p, a small line of severe warned cells started moving into the Whitemarsh, PA area moving WNW towards NJ. Having struck out earlier, I made my way to a small park on the water in Florence, NJ, saw some lightning, took some pictures and then started heading home.
Having to stop for gas, I stopped off outside Bristol, PA and while I was filling my tank, a huge bolt dropped out of the sky to the East. Checking radar, there was a small cell starting to take shape that had been forming around Deptford, NJ but was beginning to take off south of Medford.
I didn't want to travel too far (I still had to work today) but found a place right on the water in Bristol, PA and was able to shoot right across the river, over Burlington, directly at this cell that at this point was moving more away from me than to one side or the other, so a pretty nice line-up. This cell threw out some pretty decent bolts and I'm glad I went out.
Steeple Jason was incredible with the Black-browed Albatross colony but the Striated Caracaras steal any show. Aggressive, curious, and operating in packs these raptors will entertain you for hours. That fact was a plus since we were marooned here for about 6 hours due to extremely high winds.
In 2006 I Googled “places to hike in the northeast Ohio/Northwest PA”. The NCT came up & looked good, particularly the Allegheny NF section. I scheduled a weekend trip and was hooked; I had to return for more hiking and soon. That year I completed the section through Allegany SP in NY through Allegheny NF & Cooks Forest SP. I have repeated that hike a few times since and hike the ANF or most of it every year. I since have hiked the entire PA section, some of NY, the MI LP from the Manistee NF border through Wilderness SP. I have hiked the trail in the MI UP from the Hiawatha NF boundary to Pictured Rocks NL. Lots of other hiking & other obligations have slowed my progress some, but the hike I did this year (a re-hike through the east section of Hiawatha NF, Tahquamenon Falls SP & Lake Superior State Forest plus part of Allegheny NF) re-kindled my desire to complete the whole trail. That weekend trip in 2006 changed my life for the better in so many ways. The NCT has a special meaning to me.

My tribe of hiking/camping/backpacking friends all decided to take the challenge this year. We did some of the miles together and others on our own. The constant for me was my 11 year old Labrador, Boomer, who completed his 100 miles with me today. I got to see some beautiful parts of Michigan that I might not have seen otherwise. "Thanks!"
