Photo taken on Day 5 of our back along the Wokkpash Lopp route in Stone Mountain and Northern Rocky Mountain Provincial Parks in northern British Columbia. This day we day hiked in the Forlorn Lake area and up to Mt. Saint Magnus viewpoints.

In 2006 I Googled “places to hike in the northeast Ohio/Northwest PA”. The NCT came up & looked good, particularly the Allegheny NF section. I scheduled a weekend trip and was hooked; I had to return for more hiking and soon. That year I completed the section through Allegany SP in NY through Allegheny NF & Cooks Forest SP. I have repeated that hike a few times since and hike the ANF or most of it every year. I since have hiked the entire PA section, some of NY, the MI LP from the Manistee NF border through Wilderness SP. I have hiked the trail in the MI UP from the Hiawatha NF boundary to Pictured Rocks NL. Lots of other hiking & other obligations have slowed my progress some, but the hike I did this year (a re-hike through the east section of Hiawatha NF, Tahquamenon Falls SP & Lake Superior State Forest plus part of Allegheny NF) re-kindled my desire to complete the whole trail. That weekend trip in 2006 changed my life for the better in so many ways. The NCT has a special meaning to me.

Photo taken on day three of our backpack along the Wokkpash Loop in the Stone Mountain Provincial Park/Northern Rocky Mountain Provincial Park. This day we started just below the large narrow Wokkpash Lake and hiked to ranger cabin at the end of the lake.

I was introduced to the NCT and the 100 mile challenge back in the summer but it wasn't until the end of October that I persuaded my friend, Steve, into completing the challenge with me. In 2 months we crammed the 100 miles into 17 individual hikes. We each have dogs; at least one of them accompanied us in 16 out of the 17 trips and at times the entire pack joined the fun. Most of our hikes took place in Ohio but on one occasion we did venture up to Michigan and learned a few things in the process: 1. Squaw-field was the site of the last camp of Pottawatomie Indians in Michigan before moving to Iowa 2. Always wear bright colors when hiking in a game preserve during hunting season! It was a great challenge. Our only regret was not beginning sooner so we would have had an opportunity to visit more of the trail in other states...perhaps in 2017.

Roll with us in Monterey: With recreational tours and nearly every type of competitive bike racing on tap, the Sea Otter Classic is the largest gathering of cycling and outdoor enthusiasts in North America. Don’t miss it! www.seaotterclassic.com/

My tribe of hiking/camping/backpacking friends all decided to take the challenge this year. We did some of the miles together and others on our own. The constant for me was my 11 year old Labrador, Boomer, who completed his 100 miles with me today. I got to see some beautiful parts of Michigan that I might not have seen otherwise. "Thanks!"

I didn't decide to work on the challenge until early November. At the time I had about 40 miles completed. The last two hikes were on snow-covered asphalt. Dec 17 I used skis, but was almost as slow as hiking. I had to break most of the trail (think walking on skis). My preferred sections are north of White Cloud but I chose closer sections to save driving time. NCT miles: By distance measuring tool on interactive map. Al D. 8.75. Bridge build 1 Same 1/10 mile a lot of times. Brad, Lorna, Beth check trail 2. Brad, Lorna, Beth 11.85 Two nights out in Nichols lake area. Middleville (with Noonday Ch.) 7.1. Hiked a few different areas around the state of Michigan including Porcupine Mountains, Jordan Valley, and up around the Petoskey area. We also made a visit to the headquarters in Lowell, Michigan. I hiked with my sister in-law and her daughter, what a great adventure. Had a few hikes with my husband and our dog; it's a great bonding time. Hope to continue on this adventure throughout my life.

As a Marquette, MI resident, this was a great excuse to get out on the trail. I was able to link a large section of the trail together (Sections 6 - 17 in the North Country Trail Hikers Chapter) and I'm looking forward to linking even more sections of trail together to eventually hike the entire NCT length through the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Beyond just hiking in the Marquette area, I also spent some time backpacking with my sister at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore (see photo!). I hadn't been backpacking for more than 10 years, but was inspired to pull out my pack and log some miles for this challenge. What an amazing place! I can't believe waited this long. This is one of the coolest things I've done in a while. Because of this challenge, I've started hiking more regularly, running more often (to get stronger for longer hikes), and backpacking again. I'm healthier, happier, and genuinely proud of myself! Here's to the NCT! Happy trails to all.

I flew in from Boston and hiked 100 miles in 8 days with my Michigan sister-in-law and cousin from San Diego. It was a wonderful family experience! It was hard and I had never done anything like this. We had a great time and I'm so proud to tell people of our accomplishment.

First day I hiked was February 13 and it was 0° out. Last day I hiked was November 6 and it was 65° out. My friend and I hiked a beautiful portion through the Manistee National Forest the summer and back packed for three days. (That was probably my most favorite section). We did about 80 of the miles together. Our shortest hike was 4 miles and our longest hike was 12 1/2 miles, in one day, with a full backpack with tent, food and gear. I will be receiving my patch and certificate at the West Michigan Chapter meeting on Nov. 27 With Lisa Edwards.
