My son and I headed out in early October for a 17 mile out and back (34 mile total) hike on the NCT in Western Pennsylvania. About 20 miles in, as we were hiking along a short road section, rain started to fall. A car pulled up next to us and asked if we needed a ride. We replied with an appreciative, "no, we are on a planned hike." As the car disappeared in the distance the rain became torrential...my son and I looked at each other and we both agreed we should have taken the ride to the next trailhead! A few hours later; wet, cold and in the pitch dark we arrived at our start point...12 hours, 34 miles for this hike; we both reached our 100 mile total a few weeks later!

Actually a total of 200 miles now! I absolutely love to hike this trail it's beautiful and the people you meet are very friendly.

Day four saw our only significant elevation gain on this trip. We went up the Plug Creek drainage (~650m gain) and then entered really nice alpine areas and camped at Last Call Lake. Photo taken on the Wokkpash Loop in Stone Mountain Provincial Park, British Columbia, Canada.

My friend Ginger and I took up the North Country 100 mile challenge at the Buckeye Trail Fest in May. We enjoy hiking and setting goals for ourselves. We have completed the challenge carefully keeping accurate account of each hike. Have enjoyed the beautiful scenery encountered on our hikes as well as the wildlife. Two other friends have joined us on some of our adventures. Included is a picture of us in the big chair outside of Tappan Lake restaurant after one of our hikes. Looking forward to another challenge next year!

I didn't decide to work on the challenge until early November. At the time I had about 40 miles completed. The last two hikes were on snow-covered asphalt. Dec 17 I used skis, but was almost as slow as hiking. I had to break most of the trail (think walking on skis). My preferred sections are north of White Cloud but I chose closer sections to save driving time. NCT miles: By distance measuring tool on interactive map. Al D. 8.75. In 2006 I Googled “places to hike in the northeast Ohio/Northwest PA”. The NCT came up & looked good, particularly the Allegheny NF section. I scheduled a weekend trip and was hooked; I had to return for more hiking and soon. That year I completed the section through Allegany SP in NY through Allegheny NF & Cooks Forest SP. I have repeated that hike a few times since and hike the ANF or most of it every year. I since have hiked the entire PA section, some of NY, the MI LP from the Manistee NF border through Wilderness SP. I have hiked the trail in the MI UP from the Hiawatha NF boundary to Pictured Rocks NL. Lots of other hiking & other obligations have slowed my progress some, but the hike I did this year (a re-hike through the east section of Hiawatha NF, Tahquamenon Falls SP & Lake Superior State Forest plus part of Allegheny NF) re-kindled my desire to complete the whole trail. That weekend trip in 2006 changed my life for the better in so many ways. The NCT has a special meaning to me.

Photo taken on day three of our backpack along the Wokkpash Loop in the Stone Mountain Provincial Park/Northern Rocky Mountain Provincial Park. This day we started just below the large narrow Wokkpash Lake and hiked to ranger cabin at the end of the lake.

We hiked our 100 miles in New York along the Finger Lakes Trail and the Onondaga Trail including the Eastern Terminus in Crown Point, NY. We are looking forward to the trail being completed in the Adirondack Mountains. We hiked in all four seasons and the winter hikes are the best! Thanks for the 100 mile Challenge to get folks out along the trail.

My tribe of hiking/camping/backpacking friends all decided to take the challenge this year. We did some of the miles together and others on our own. The constant for me was my 11 year old Labrador, Boomer, who completed his 100 miles with me today. I got to see some beautiful parts of Michigan that I might not have seen otherwise. "Thanks!"

My friend, John, and I did our first hike on May 15th and completed our 21st hike yesterday. We've hiked 190 miles with 27,000 feet of elevation gain. All along the NCT / Finger Lakes Trail / OCT (Onondaga County Trail). Without question the best hiking season I've ever had, the trail designers are super heroes in my book!

Loved every minute of "Our Adventures on the NCT". We are already planning more hiking on the NCT for the summer of 2017! Thanks for the Challenge! It got us out there! The river in the photo is the Temperance River. We winter tent camped there on our hike thru (Pic taken Nov. 19th 2016).

Just a few thoughts about my hikes on the North Country Trail: I feel so blessed to live where such a beautiful trail is available for all of us. I have hiked in the UP twice this year in different places along the trail and several places in the lower part of the state. The work that is done by the volunteers is super; I will be one next year! At 77 I cherish each mile I get to do. I daily thank the Lord for creating such beauty for us to enjoy, and I thank him that I was able to hike over 1,700 miles so far this year. Blessings!

Chubby cheeks on our walk today. I love living in a town where you run into the same people on a regular basis, WITHOUT preplanning anything. #girdwood #alaska #getoutside #babysamspam
