We have a cabin 1/2 mile off the NCT and when I saw this challenge come up, I jumped on it! (I can't pass up a good challenge.) (My husband joined me for the first 50 miles but he's recently retired and said he doesn't need any more challenges.) So I finished up the remaining 50 miles without him. I decided to use this as a reason to check out hiking trails in Manistee County and beyond, that I just have never made time to visit. Thank you, NCT.org for creating this wonderful idea that allowed me to do so!! How could I have lived in the incredible location for the last 25 years and never ventured out into these special areas? I probably never would have done it without your challenge. (And I have lost over 20 lbs in the process! Bonus!!) And even though I started this late in the year (August), I finished before the snow fell. Still planning on continuing to explore in snowshoes later. Thank you!!

In 2006 I Googled “places to hike in the northeast Ohio/Northwest PA”. The NCT came up & looked good, particularly the Allegheny NF section. I scheduled a weekend trip and was hooked; I had to return for more hiking and soon. That year I completed the section through Allegany SP in NY through Allegheny NF & Cooks Forest SP. I have repeated that hike a few times since and hike the ANF or most of it every year. I since have hiked the entire PA section, some of NY, the MI LP from the Manistee NF border through Wilderness SP. I have hiked the trail in the MI UP from the Hiawatha NF boundary to Pictured Rocks NL. Lots of other hiking & other obligations have slowed my progress some, but the hike I did this year (a re-hike through the east section of Hiawatha NF, Tahquamenon Falls SP & Lake Superior State Forest plus part of Allegheny NF) re-kindled my desire to complete the whole trail. That weekend trip in 2006 changed my life for the better in so many ways. The NCT has a special meaning to me.

Socks and sandals on 16th Street in downtown Denver

We hiked our 100 miles in New York along the Finger Lakes Trail and the Onondaga Trail including the Eastern Terminus in Crown Point, NY. We are looking forward to the trail being completed in the Adirondack Mountains. We hiked in all four seasons and the winter hikes are the best! Thanks for the 100 mile Challenge to get folks out along the trail.

This is my second year completing the challenge and I LOVE IT! I am so grateful for the Hike 100 Challenge because it has led me out to explore some fabulous local trails. I've attached a photo me checking out some wildflowers on a spring hike in Taylor Valley State Forest. I post trip reports of my hikes with additional photos at sarahikes.blogspot.com/. I didn't count it for the Build It challenge because no one reads it, but I did make a donation this year (not sure which chapter).

I didn't decide to work on the challenge until early November. At the time I had about 40 miles completed. The last two hikes were on snow-covered asphalt. Dec 17 I used skis, but was almost as slow as hiking. I had to break most of the trail (think walking on skis). My preferred sections are north of White Cloud but I chose closer sections to save driving time. NCT miles: By distance measuring tool on interactive map. Al D. 8.75. This is one of those times for the memory books. It started in April and ended Friday, October 28. Well, it didn’t really end because this will also mark the beginning of the next 100 miles. Thank you, for encouraging exploration in the real world. Virtual reality cannot compare to the feeling of the wind, the smell of freshly fallen leaves, the damp mist of the early morning fog, the smoky smell of a camp fire, the snort of a startled deer, the laughter of friends new and old, the rush of water flowing over rocks and… To the stewards of the trails that spend countless hours caring for the land, for sharing the news and creating the challenges that encourage us to step outside, I am truly grateful and wish you and all that follow, Happy Trails. Thank you again for making this a trip of a lifetime.

Gorgeous! I live a few blocks from the NCT as it heads into Petoskey, MI, so I get to walk the Bear River into town, and it's one of the reasons I moved here. Plus this challenge motivated me to do some hiking in Michigan's UP - Tahquamanon Falls and Pictured Rocks OMG! So what's next?

It was an awesome experience doing the 100 mile challenge! I got in the bulk of my miles on monthly hikes with our hiking group that meets on Sundays and is led by Mark Roberts. In the winter months this involved snowshoeing. In the late spring and early summer it meant dealing from time to time with lots of mosquitoes and black flies. The fall was an absolutely glorious time to be out given the lack of pests and the presence of spectacular colors (although low on reds this year). I had to jam in a lot of miles late, but it was a great opportunity to see parts of the trail I hadn't seen before. There is so much beauty in Peter Wolfe Chapter, particularly in the Trap Hills. The trail is a hidden gem that I have tried to capture on my Tumblr blog called "Life in the North Country" at NorthCountryLiving. Check it out to enjoy highlights from my 100 miles!

iancrolfe: Super!

capturedby_mc: beautiful perspective(s)

The Hike 100 came to my attention in September and I signed up at the beginning of October. I had hiked 3 miles of the North Country Trail near Mackinaw Bridge in July, so I had 3 months to do the other 97 miles. Eight friends and family members were happy to join me in various sections of the trail, so I was able to finish in six weeks. Besides the obvious exercise benefit, I also enjoyed seeing God's beautiful creation. I walked past rivers, streams, lakes, swamps, ponds and beautiful trees. I watched the leaves change from green to multiple colors, fall and make a colorful carpet and then a brown and crunchy trail covering. Maybe one of the best benefits was the good conversations we were able to have hiking through nature. My hiking buddies and I celebrated mile 100 yesterday by walking together and then enjoying a taco bar and a "100 Miles" cake. It was 70 degrees yesterday here in Michigan; today it's snowing. I hope there's a similar challenge in 2017!

I hiked in the Eastern Upper Peninsula mostly in the Hiawatha Shore-to-Shore Chapter's area, mostly on monthly group hikes and trail maintenance events. My mileage also includes the Labor Day Mackinac Bridge Walk. Many miles were done on snowshoes -- even into April! The activity helped me lose 20lbs this year!

Winter in Yellowstone National Park

We started our challenge on May 7 and completed our 100 miles on November 13 just before the firearm deer hunting season. Most of our hiking was done in Newaygo County with 63 miles. We also hiked 7 miles along the Flat River in Kent County and covered 30 miles in the U.P. The Pictured Rocks National Seashore was especially scenic although we also enjoyed walks to O-Kun-De-Kun Falls and in a wilderness area near Craig Lake State Park. We had never attempted to hike this far, but after the first couple of hikes and a group led hike by the West Michigan Chapter, we decided this wasn't so bad after all and we felt like we could just keep going. In fact, as the summer progressed we became stronger and hiked over 10 miles a couple of times. Before, we had never tried to go over 5 miles in any one stint. Thanks for giving us a reason to get out on the trail. It made for a year to remember.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 100 mile challenge experience in Northern Michigan! Even our two dogs completed every mile with us. Our journey started with trekking through snow covered trails in Jordan Valley where we crossed over the 45th parallel, by spring we were hiking on the scenic high banks of the Manistee River, and much of our time was spent exploring the tranquility of Sand Lakes Quiet Area. I would recommend these portions of the NCT to fellow hikers. Both Grand Traverse and Jordan Valley Hiking Clubs do a phenomenal job of maintaining their local trail systems.

I took a friend on a 5-day 85+ mile hike on what I felt was the best part of the SHT since I had thru-hiked it a couple years ago. I then finished the 100 miles on the SHT through Duluth. Closest we got to a bear was this print.

I was introduced to the NCT and the 100 mile challenge back in the summer but it wasn't until the end of October that I persuaded my friend, Steve, into completing the challenge with me. In 2 months we crammed the 100 miles into 17 individual hikes. We each have dogs; at least one of them accompanied us in 16 out of the 17 trips and at times the entire pack joined the fun. Most of our hikes took place in Ohio but on one occasion we did venture up to Michigan and learned a few things in the process: 1. Squaw-field was the site of the last camp of Pottawatomie Indians in Michigan before moving to Iowa 2. Always wear bright colors when hiking in a game preserve during hunting season! It was a great challenge. Our only regret was not beginning sooner so we would have had an opportunity to visit more of the trail in other states...perhaps in 2017.

I live in Michigan's Lower Peninsula with two awesome German Shorthaired Pointers. We love the Upper Peninsula and spending time out in the woods exploring all that our beautiful state has to offer. I found that I missed the time we spent in nature whenever I was away from the UP and used this challenge to find new areas to explore when I couldn't make it to the UP. And of course, some of our miles were logged while visiting the UP as well. What I loved about doing this is that I discovered small towns, farmlands, and beautiful wooded areas that I never would have explored without this challenge. I was joined along the way by both of my girls as well as dogs that I foster for a local rescue. Many miles were completed with 2 or 3 dogs along for the fun and my 13 year old pup, Imke, joined me for all 100 miles. It was an adventure I will never forget!
