Excited to say that I completed my 100 mile challenge yesterday!! I knew where I wanted to end my journey - a very special spot in the Jordan River Valley, near the Landslide Overlook. My trail-sister (and nature-friend) was with me on the trail. She completed her challenge a few months ago - her name is Ellen Whitehead. This has been “100 Miles of Healing" for me. I lost my son to suicide a year ago on September 29th. My first hike after his passing was in the Jordan River Valley. On that hike a beautiful ray of light came through the trees and surrounded me while I was kneeling next to the river. My trail-sister was with me and experienced this special moment also. I believe that ray of light was my son telling me he was okay now. That spot will always be special to me!! I also began seeing hearts all around me after my son went to heaven. (The ray of light I described is in an attached picture.) The spot is next to the very first bridge you come to in the Jordan River Valley after leaving the Landslide Lookout. I will pray that my story will be a blessing and encouragement to those who are on their grief journey. My son is closest to me in nature. He hikes and snowshoes every step with me when I am on the trail. Hiking has become very therapeutic for me and it is where I feel my son closest to me. He walked beside me every mile of this challenge!! Looking forward to getting my patch and certificate! Be Blessed!

Photo taken on day three of our backpack along the Wokkpash Loop in the Stone Mountain Provincial Park/Northern Rocky Mountain Provincial Park. This day we started just below the large narrow Wokkpash Lake and hiked to ranger cabin at the end of the lake.
I hiked in the Eastern Upper Peninsula mostly in the Hiawatha Shore-to-Shore Chapter's area, mostly on monthly group hikes and trail maintenance events. My mileage also includes the Labor Day Mackinac Bridge Walk. Many miles were done on snowshoes -- even into April! The activity helped me lose 20lbs this year!

I didn't decide to work on the challenge until early November. At the time I had about 40 miles completed. The last two hikes were on snow-covered asphalt. Dec 17 I used skis, but was almost as slow as hiking. I had to break most of the trail (think walking on skis). My preferred sections are north of White Cloud but I chose closer sections to save driving time. NCT miles: By distance measuring tool on interactive map. Al D. 8.75. This is one of those times for the memory books. It started in April and ended Friday, October 28. Well, it didn’t really end because this will also mark the beginning of the next 100 miles. Thank you, for encouraging exploration in the real world. Virtual reality cannot compare to the feeling of the wind, the smell of freshly fallen leaves, the damp mist of the early morning fog, the smoky smell of a camp fire, the snort of a startled deer, the laughter of friends new and old, the rush of water flowing over rocks and… To the stewards of the trails that spend countless hours caring for the land, for sharing the news and creating the challenges that encourage us to step outside, I am truly grateful and wish you and all that follow, Happy Trails. Thank you again for making this a trip of a lifetime.

I finished my 100 miles today for the NCT hike 100 challenge! Hiking next to the Cascade River and over the creek up to Overlook Mountain on this fantastic day I felt nothing but great joy of accomplishment.

We have a cabin 1/2 mile off the NCT and when I saw this challenge come up, I jumped on it! (I can't pass up a good challenge.) (My husband joined me for the first 50 miles but he's recently retired and said he doesn't need any more challenges.) So I finished up the remaining 50 miles without him. I decided to use this as a reason to check out hiking trails in Manistee County and beyond, that I just have never made time to visit. Thank you, NCT.org for creating this wonderful idea that allowed me to do so!! How could I have lived in the incredible location for the last 25 years and never ventured out into these special areas? I probably never would have done it without your challenge. (And I have lost over 20 lbs in the process! Bonus!!) And even though I started this late in the year (August), I finished before the snow fell. Still planning on continuing to explore in snowshoes later. Thank you!!

I loved hiking with my Grandmother growing up in England. She was an avid member of the National Ramblers Association and would take me hiking with her local group on weekends. I loved to receive postcards from all the hikes they would take in Switzerland. We still hiked 10 mile trails together well into her 80's. I'm raising my own teenagers now and am happy to pass on the hiking bug. My 17 year old daughter even wants to attempt the Appalachian Trail with me. Thank you for all the care and energy you all put into keeping these trails in amazing condition. It is much appreciated.

In 2006 I Googled “places to hike in the northeast Ohio/Northwest PA”. The NCT came up & looked good, particularly the Allegheny NF section. I scheduled a weekend trip and was hooked; I had to return for more hiking and soon. That year I completed the section through Allegany SP in NY through Allegheny NF & Cooks Forest SP. I have repeated that hike a few times since and hike the ANF or most of it every year. I since have hiked the entire PA section, some of NY, the MI LP from the Manistee NF border through Wilderness SP. I have hiked the trail in the MI UP from the Hiawatha NF boundary to Pictured Rocks NL. Lots of other hiking & other obligations have slowed my progress some, but the hike I did this year (a re-hike through the east section of Hiawatha NF, Tahquamenon Falls SP & Lake Superior State Forest plus part of Allegheny NF) re-kindled my desire to complete the whole trail. That weekend trip in 2006 changed my life for the better in so many ways. The NCT has a special meaning to me.
