I didn't decide to work on the challenge until early November. At the time I had about 40 miles completed. The last two hikes were on snow-covered asphalt. Dec 17 I used skis, but was almost as slow as hiking. I had to break most of the trail (think walking on skis). My preferred sections are north of White Cloud but I chose closer sections to save driving time. NCT miles: By distance measuring tool on interactive map. Al D. 8.75. Me and my dog Patrick have completed our 100 miles!!! It's very beautiful up there!!!! I love the trail!!!

All of my hiking on the North Country Trail was on the Finger Lakes Trail in NY, most of it as part of the Finger Lakes Trail Conference 2016 Cattaraugus County hiking series. The remainder was on the Onondaga branch of the FLT hiked with the Adirondack Mountain Club Genesee Valley Chapter.

This is one of those times for the memory books. It started in April and ended Friday, October 28. Well, it didn’t really end because this will also mark the beginning of the next 100 miles. Thank you, for encouraging exploration in the real world. Virtual reality cannot compare to the feeling of the wind, the smell of freshly fallen leaves, the damp mist of the early morning fog, the smoky smell of a camp fire, the snort of a startled deer, the laughter of friends new and old, the rush of water flowing over rocks and… To the stewards of the trails that spend countless hours caring for the land, for sharing the news and creating the challenges that encourage us to step outside, I am truly grateful and wish you and all that follow, Happy Trails. Thank you again for making this a trip of a lifetime.

It was an awesome experience doing the 100 mile challenge! I got in the bulk of my miles on monthly hikes with our hiking group that meets on Sundays and is led by Mark Roberts. In the winter months this involved snowshoeing. In the late spring and early summer it meant dealing from time to time with lots of mosquitoes and black flies. The fall was an absolutely glorious time to be out given the lack of pests and the presence of spectacular colors (although low on reds this year). I had to jam in a lot of miles late, but it was a great opportunity to see parts of the trail I hadn't seen before. There is so much beauty in Peter Wolfe Chapter, particularly in the Trap Hills. The trail is a hidden gem that I have tried to capture on my Tumblr blog called "Life in the North Country" at NorthCountryLiving. Check it out to enjoy highlights from my 100 miles!

There were hikes ranging from the MRT/NCT loop, the Jordan River Trail loop (many many times!), as well as the UP walking through the Lake Superior SFCG (also my favorite place to camp). Being back in the light of backpacking/hiking has really been a great way to unwind from the ills of the world. There's such beauty across this trail, even when it takes you through small village towns. It's nice to see such a variety of scenery and a great place to call "home".

Excited to say that I completed my 100 mile challenge yesterday!! I knew where I wanted to end my journey - a very special spot in the Jordan River Valley, near the Landslide Overlook. My trail-sister (and nature-friend) was with me on the trail. She completed her challenge a few months ago - her name is Ellen Whitehead. This has been “100 Miles of Healing" for me. I lost my son to suicide a year ago on September 29th. My first hike after his passing was in the Jordan River Valley. On that hike a beautiful ray of light came through the trees and surrounded me while I was kneeling next to the river. My trail-sister was with me and experienced this special moment also. I believe that ray of light was my son telling me he was okay now. That spot will always be special to me!! I also began seeing hearts all around me after my son went to heaven. (The ray of light I described is in an attached picture.) The spot is next to the very first bridge you come to in the Jordan River Valley after leaving the Landslide Lookout. I will pray that my story will be a blessing and encouragement to those who are on their grief journey. My son is closest to me in nature. He hikes and snowshoes every step with me when I am on the trail. Hiking has become very therapeutic for me and it is where I feel my son closest to me. He walked beside me every mile of this challenge!! Looking forward to getting my patch and certificate! Be Blessed!

We started January 5 and finished November 7. I will treasure the memories made with my daughter, and my son's two girls. Snow, bugs, bridges, beaver dams, and finishing the last hike in the dark by moonlight! Thank you so much for your work on the trail.

When I first heard of the Hike 100 Challenge I thought to myself, "Too bad the timing of this wasn't a little better." A few months earlier my family and I had a reunion on the trail. We all met in Wisconsin and hiked 101 Miles in a week. It was great, but we had to make our miles every day to stay on schedule. In the process we missed out on a few things. So I decided to take the challenge on a lot of the same sections of trail, this time at a much slower pace, spreading it out over the course of a year. It was beautiful to see the seasons change and all the little things I missed the first time, and the not so little things. As it turned out the trail builders have been very busy since our previous trip. I was lucky enough to explore all new trail to start the challenge in the MacQuarrie Wetland area. And as I finished I was breaking in new trail in Copper Falls. In fact the trail builders had just finished a couple hours before I hiked through. Thank you volunteers!

I hiked in the Eastern Upper Peninsula mostly in the Hiawatha Shore-to-Shore Chapter's area, mostly on monthly group hikes and trail maintenance events. My mileage also includes the Labor Day Mackinac Bridge Walk. Many miles were done on snowshoes -- even into April! The activity helped me lose 20lbs this year!

I started the challenge with a small group of people on January 1, 2016. Only about 4 hikes were scheduled and totaled less 25 miles. I decided to finish on my own and completed the last 12 miles on December 26, 2016, including a 25 mile section that I backpacked with a friend on my 52nd birthday in September! I was hoping to get to other states but it just did not work out. I also hiked around 60 miles on the AT this year. I plan to sign up for 2017 challenge as well and make it to other states although there is plenty of trail in Ohio and it was beautiful!

I love that this is my home trail. I spend many weekends up out there.

I finished my 100 miles today for the NCT hike 100 challenge! Hiking next to the Cascade River and over the creek up to Overlook Mountain on this fantastic day I felt nothing but great joy of accomplishment.
