This Natural Arch can be found in Bryce Canyon in Southern Utah. I love the amazing red rock geological formations! If you haven't been here, it needs to be on your wish list!

Bryce Canyon National Park is located in southwestern Utah in the United States. The major feature of the park is Bryce Canyon is a collection of giant natural amphitheaters along the eastern side of the Paunsaugunt Plateau. Bryce is distinctive due to geological structures called hoodoos, formed by frost weathering and stream erosion of the river and lake bed sedimentary rocks.

The landscape depicts the Tizi region in Morocco's High Atlas Mountains, along the N9 national road, a crucial link between Marrakesh and Ouarzazate. The reddish and ochre sedimentary rock slopes, rich in iron oxides, stand out. They are the result of water and wind erosion on geologically fragile materials, forming a badlands relief. Sparse vegetation, adapted to the semi-arid climate, colonizes the slopes, contrasting with the exposed rock formations. This mountainous route offers panoramic views of the region's complex geology, where the N9 road crosses the famous Tizi n'Tichka pass at an altitude of 2,260 meters, exposing colorful rock outcrops and diverse geological structures, from ancient igneous rocks to Mesozoic sediments. The road, in addition to its strategic importance for transport, allows visitors to appreciate the natural diversity of the Atlas Mountains.

Light from the setting sun illuminates the West Mitten butte in Monument Valley.

Standing on the rim of the Grand Canyon during a late October evening, I witnessed an extraordinary moment as the season's first snow met the canyon's fiery sunset glow. This rare combination of autumn's first winter kiss and the warm desert light created a scene I'll never forget.

I positioned myself to capture this incredible juxtaposition between the fresh snow dusting the foreground rocks and the warm, golden light painting the distant mesas and buttes. The setting sun cast this magnificent orange and copper glow across the layered rock formations, making them appear almost molten against the cooler blue tones of the sky and shadows.

What struck me most was how this early snowfall transformed the familiar canyon landscape into something magical and unexpected. The pristine white patches on the rim rocks provided a stunning contrast to the warm desert tones below, creating a scene that perfectly captured the transition between seasons.

My intention was to freeze this fleeting moment when autumn's first snow meets the timeless, fiery beauty of the canyon - a reminder of nature's ability to surprise us even in the most familiar places.

The wall, that is, of the Carnarvon Gorge Amphitheatre. Hidden behind a towering sandstone cliff and accessible only through a narrow crevasse in the rock*, the Amphitheatre, with its weather-scoured walls, is one of the Gorge’s most spectacular features—a 70 metre deep chamber cut into the rock over millennia by the force of running water. It is an awesome sight, but a challenge to photograph because of the extreme contrast between the bright light on the rocks at the top and the deep shadows on the walls lower down. In reality much of the sandstone in the walls at the bottom is virtually the same colour as that at the top but it appears much darker due to the complete lack of direct sunlight**.

* For a wide-angle view of the overall cliff face and the narrow crevasse in the rock, see my earlier image, No. 0420. And for a view of the opening at the top of the Amphitheatre, see my adjacent image No. 0500.

** Note: Image No. 0420 also provides an indication of the colour variation in the sandstone walls.

Henry Hinkey loves his comic books. He eats donuts, drinks soda and reads all night long thinking about how cool it would be to be a comic character in real life. Yesterday, Henry woke up floating in the sky. He had become Cloud Man! He has no idea how the transformation occurred and hasn't had time to figure out what his special powers are, but, apparently, just his head is needed to be Cloud Man. Oh, and he can talk which is great fun. Really freaks out people, especially, the religious!

Driving through a world of magnificently colored and rugged rock features made of contrasting red rocks sandstones is extremely pleasing. The geology is this backdrop to the park's unique Western heritage, that can be found along Scenic Byway 24. Try to get just a taste of Capitol Reef and you'll find yourself wanting more, more and more!. It definitely should be on your bucket-list landscapes to discover today! (Mom, this image is for you too!)

Recently there were some winter storm fronts rolling through with potential for snow in the Grand Canyon. I planned an impromptu road trip to the Grand Canyon to get it blanketed in snow.

The drive along 75 mile beach on Fraser Island (K'gari) is an ever changing visual delight with the sparkling blue waters and white sand of the Pacific Ocean on one side and a mix of rolling sand dunes and drifts along with incredible geological formations such as these towering ochre cliffs on the other. In amongst all this beauty is a scattering of campers, swimmers and fisherman along with the odd dingo. A shipwreck is also thrown in for good measure!

Thor’s hammer is a precariously shaped hoodoo that looks as if it’s going to topple over any minute. But it has been intact for more years that I have been alive so I am not going to judge based on looks. This formation almost blends into the multitude of hoodoos when you look at it from the sunset point but if you take the time out to hike a few hundred feet down, the whole scene changes and you can view the majestic formation standing out against the vivid blue sky.

I am very glad that we decided to stick with our travel plans even after learning about the winter storm that was going to hit the park. I took this shot on our last morning at Bryce canyon just as the skies cleared out after the storm, we had a fresh coat of powder and it was worth the -10F cold to see this place with a fresh blanket of snow.

Gunung Kawi is also significant because it reflects Bali's unique blend of Hindu and animist beliefs. The temple's carvings feature both Hindu gods and animist spirits, reflecting the island's cultural heritage and syncretic religious practices.
