We were disappointed to see this view completely fogged in on our trip down the Oregon coast, but the weather was better on the way back,.

The Olo River, a tributary of the Tâmega, flows through the Alvão Natural Park, where its waters, intensified by winter rains, meander towards Fisgas de Ermelo, one of Portugal's most remarkable waterfalls. The landscape is carved by steep slopes and rock formations of schist and quartzite, reflecting the geological dynamics of this area. In the background, the village of Varzigueto, located at an altitude of 745 meters in the municipality of Mondim de Basto, features agricultural terraces that bear witness to traditional human occupation. These fields, adapted to the mountainous terrain, contrast with the scrubland and vegetation characteristic of the region, which takes on different colors throughout the seasons. The balance between nature preservation and ancestral agricultural practices highlights the local cultural identity and biodiversity, making this area a place of tourist and environmental interest.

“All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” J.R.R. Tolkien Looking across at the incredible chunk of rock which makes up Gimili peak. The high quality of the rock at Gimili makes it an amazing location for scrambling and climbing, particularly compared to the crumbling sedimentary strata of the Rocky Mountains. Hard to get an idea of scale here; can you see my 3 friends sitting and having lunch on the other side of the ridge? This was a complex shot to get as Gimili towers above you even after scrambling high onto the ridge next to it. This shot was formed using 36 hand held shots stitched into a single panorama. I then edited the sky with a radial filter to achieve a long exposure look. I did have a 10 stop ND filter with me up on the ridge; but 36 long exposure shots even at 5 minutes each per shot would represent 3 hours of shooting time and the clouds would have long moved on. In Norse (or Scandinavian) mythology Gimlé or Gimili is described as the most beautiful place in Asgard, the realm of the gods. It is represented in the old stories as a kind of heaven, a golden-roofed building where righteous men go when they die. Geologically Gimili is part of the Valhalla Gneiss Complex. The complex consists of lower grade metamorphic sediments interspersed with massive high grade granitic and granodiorite intrusions such as Gimili. It sits at 2774m (9100 ft ) in the Selkirk Mountains of Valhalla Provincial Park. British Columbia, Canada.

A World Heritage Site for its Aboriginal heritage, plant and animal life and stunning natural beauty, Grampians National Park is one of Australia's most recognisable places. The best way to appreciate it is on one of its many walks.

Vega de Liordes, a glacial valley in the Central Massif of the Picos de Europa, in Cantabria, Spain, is located at an altitude of approximately 1900 meters. This emblematic mountain meadow, with flat bottoms and surrounded by limestone cliffs, is crossed by the trail that connects the refuge of Collado Jermoso to Fuente Dé, a classic mountain route. The geological formation, resulting from Quaternary glacial erosion in a karst relief, creates a remarkable contrast between the plain of the meadow and the surrounding escarpments. Serving as a high-altitude pasture in the summer, the Vega de Liordes has herbaceous vegetation adapted to alpine conditions and rocky outcrops. It is also a point of reference for hikers and mountaineers, being known for registering extremely low temperatures in winter, among the lowest in Spain.

Europe - Estonia - Harju County - Jõelähtme Parish - Laheema National Park - Jägala Waterfall - Jägala juga - Niagara of Estonia - Niagara Falls of the Baltics - Wonderful waterfall in Northern Estonia on Jägala River - Highest natural waterfall in Estonia with height about 8 meters

The Jägala Waterfall (Estonian: Jägala juga) - also called "Niagara of Estonia" or "Niagara Falls of the Baltics", it is a wonderful waterfall in Northern Estonia on Jägala River. It is the highest natural waterfall in Estonia with height about 8 meters. The waterfall forms two strong whirlpools at each edge. Whirlpool at the right shore is stronger - reportedly there is 6 m deep pit. The waterfall has created some 300 m long canyon with 12 - 14 m high rims. In the limestone in upper side of the waterfall could be seen fossils of ancient cephalopods (related to octopuses).

Valley of Fire State Park- Nevada

Guincho rock, the natural landmark of Santa Cruz beach in Torres Vedras, is an imposing rock formation that rises to about 30 meters, testimony to the geodiversity of the Portuguese coast. This sedimentary structure, resulting from the consolidation of ancient coastal dunes during the Quaternary period, displays a characteristic orange hue. Over thousands of years, marine erosion has carved a natural arch at its base, creating an iconic “window.” The low-lying vegetation, dominated by beach willow, although invasive, contributes to soil stabilization. Geographically, the rock demarcates the beaches of Guincho and Formosa, with interaction dictated by the tides, allowing access on foot at low tide. The site is popular for surfing and bodyboarding, forming part of a stretch of coastline with mobile and unstable cliffs, making it an important symbol of Portugal's geological heritage and a landmark in the landscape of the West.

Located in Morocco's eastern High Atlas Mountains, the Todra Gorges are an impressive canyon shaped by thousands of years of erosion by the Todra River. The limestone walls, reaching heights of 300 meters and separated by only a few dozen meters at their narrowest point, attract both climbers, with more than 150 equipped routes, and tourists in search of natural beauty. Close to Tinghir, the site offers not only vertical adventure but also hiking trails that explore the surrounding landscape, contrasting with the lush oasis and palm grove of the valley. The river waters, sometimes crystal clear and shallow, invite refreshment and contemplation, while the reddish and orange coloration of the sedimentary rocks, rich in ferrous minerals, accentuates the uniqueness of this destination.

The 3 photos I'm posting today were actually taken by a friend but post-processed / edited by me before posting them here. It was a large area to be covered on foot in a limited time, so the subjects and points of view interestingly differ from person to person.

This photograph showcases the stunning natural arch, carved by the relentless sea, creating a gateway between the rugged landscape and the vast ocean beyond. The shot is composed to lead the eye through the grassy path, over the textured cliffs, and through the archway to the horizon. As the photographer, I was captivated by the beauty of the layered rock formations, the contrast between the wildness of the land and the calm sea, and the dramatic clouds that add depth to the sky. This image is a celebration of natural sculpture and the timeless dialogue between land and water.
