A look around the Piazza della Repubblica in Florence, mainly to check out the carousel and get close to the big arched building!
Piazza della Repubblica is a square in the historic center of Florence with a rectangular shape , approximately 75 meters by 100 meters. It is the best known result of the era of " Risanamento ", when the town planning of the city was redefined following the establishment of the capital of the Kingdom of Italy in Florence (from 1865 to 1871 ).
Piazza della Repubblica is the center of the city since Roman times. Here, exactly where the Colonna dell'Abbondanza is located, the cardo and the decumanus maximi met and there opened the great forum: the Cardo corresponds to via Roma , via Calimala and via Por Santa Maria , instead the Decumano corresponds to via del Course , via degli Speziali and via degli Strozzi. Archaeological traces have been found at the time of the nineteenth-century demolitions, as remains of buildings, of a spa complex to the south, of buildings of worship. Via del Campidoglio and via delle Terme for example were named after their respective archaeological finds. On the southern side there was an entrance arch, while the north side was bordered by a fence wall; to the east and south were public buildings; the Capitoline temple was to the west. In a second moment, probably the Hadrian period, the area was further monumentalized, raising and lengthening the square, with a new paving in Lunense marble higher than about a meter and a half. There were some doors with steps and a small portico with statues of magistrates and emperors. The Capitolium (1st century BC - 1st century AD) was more or less where today are the arcades, placed on a quadrangular podium of about three meters, accessible by stairs, of which the foundations remain.
Dante reports the oral tradition that in this neighborhood there was a temple dedicated to Mars that patronized the city: according to the poet this determined the bellicose character of the city. According to other sources a statue of Mars (or another deity, since it was equestrian) would have really existed and would have been placed in the Middle Ages near the Ponte Vecchio , from where it was however swept away during the flood of 1333 .
At the Topographical Museum of Florence there was a model of Roman Florentia showing a possible reconstruction of the forum and other ancient buildings.
Palazzo della Fondiaria Assicurazioni (Palazzo Levi)
It is a neo-Renaissance style building, built between 1890 and 1893 (and from the same year it was the headquarters of Fondiaria Assicurazioni) on a project by the architect Giuseppe Boccini and commission of the banker Levi. Of considerable size, so as to determine an entire block, presents a front on the square on four floors, with a long balcony on the main floor to embrace five of the total eleven axes, similar to those of the other building that closes the square on the opposite side, today perhaps less conspicuous than either for original design features, or because of a differentiated coloring that fractionates the front in three separate portions. In our case, on the other hand, between August 2005 and June 2008 the building was affected by important works carried out by SIRE Costruzioni, commissioned by Fondiaria SAI Spa, which made it possible to restore the dimension of bourgeois decorum and solidity that own. These interventions concerned the global restructuring and the distribution and functional reorganization of the interiors (more than 6 000 square meters) as well as the restoration of external facings and roofing. In the palace, on the ground, are the two historic cafés Paszkowski and Gilli. The interiors, among others, include the offices of the Autonomous Administration of the State Monopolies, the Consulate of the Principality of Monaco, the Platinhome apartments. On the side of Via Roma is a small bronze plaque commemorating Gilli as the official seat of the Donatello Prize. On the bottom of the entrance hall which is accessed from Piazza della Repubblica is a plaque framed in bronze in memory of the employees of the Fondiaria periti in the wars of 1915-18 and 1940-45.
Functional Benchmarking: application of process benchmarking that compares a particular business function in two or more organization
The new self-checkout stations in the Central Library have a nice, minimalistic look to them. They're also faster, smarter and more functional than the old scan-one-book-at-a-time machines. Now you can fan out all your books, and -- as long as the bar codes are visible from above -- they'll all be scanned and checked out at the same time. Fast and easy.

A few more of the Silverton houses. The second of the pair on the left looks as though its windows might be original. In a further proof of Fray's Law, privet hedges, becoming uncommon further south, endure here. When I was a boy there were three distinct sorts: first there was the kind with very dark shiny leaves; then, most common, was the intermediate sort that we see in the photo; last was a variety with tiny leaves disposed on either side of the stem. "Privet hedge" was a generic term; I think the dark shiny kind may actually have been laurel, and it is improbable that the sort with tiny leaves could belong to the same botanical family. Everywhere they are giving way before the advance of Leylandii, a horrible gloomy plant that is impenetrable to light, doesn't have proper leaves, looks the same at all seasons and grows several feet a year. When I come to power it will be illegal to plant them and juvenile delinquents on Community Service will be formed into chopping squads whose task it will be to rid our suburbs of this accursed plant.

Corner of Castle and St Andrew Streets, Dunedin.
A functional building, incorporating a large garage of fire engines, residential quarters, offices, and a yard at the back, it opened on 21 July 1931, and housed the firemen and their families as well as fire engines and equipment. Until 1938 it also housed the St John Ambulance Assn's ambulance.
This central station is a visual reminder of the history of the fire service in Dunedin, of the growth of Dunedin as a major city, and of the importance of fire as one of the major hazards to New Zealand communities. It carries a Heritage NZ Cat.2 listing.
The greasy "fireman's pole" is still in place!
The present Central Fire Station is the 6th main Dunedin Fire Station. The first three stations were on various sites in/around the Exchange area. The 4th was in the Octagon, 1879-1911, and the 5th in Cumberland Street, 1911-1931.

Lìjiāng (simplified Chinese: 丽江; traditional Chinese: 麗江) is a prefecture-level city in the northwest of Yunnan province, People's Republic of China. It has an area of 21,219 square kilometres and had a population of 1,244,769 at the 2010 census.
HISTORY
Lijiang City replaced the former administrative region of Lijiang Prefecture. It was under the rule of the Mu family (木氏) local commanders (土司) during the Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty.
The Baisha Old Town was the political, commercial and cultural center for the local Naxi people and other ethnic groups for 400 years from the year 658 AD to 1107 AD. The Dabaoji Palace of the Baisha Fresco, very close to the Baisha Naxi Hand-made Embroidery Institute, was built in the year 658 AD in the Tang Dynasty (618 AD to 960 AD).
In ancient times, the Baisha Old Town used to be the center of silk embroidery in the southwest of China and the most important place of the Ancient Southern Silk Road, also called the Ancient Tea and Horse Road or Ancient tea route. The Ancient Southern Silk Road started from Burma, crossed Lijiang, Shangri-La County, Tibet, journeyed through Iran, the Fertile Crescent, and ultimately to the Mediterranean Sea.
Naxi women were well known for their hand-made embroidery before 1972 during the Great Cultural Revolution. The most famous Naxi masters were arrested and put in jail, some of them died in jail during the Cultural Revolution because they did hand-made embroidery only for the Naxi Emperors when they were young.
GEOGRAPHY
Lijiang is located in the northwestern portion of Yunnan and borders Sichuan. It is in a region where the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau converge.
Owing to its low latitude and high elevation, the city centre of Lijiang experiences a mild subtropical highland climate (Köppen Cwb). Winters are mild and very dry and sunny (>70% possible sunshine), although average lows in December and January are just below the freezing mark; January, the coolest month, has a 24-hour average temperature of 6.0 °C. Spring begins early and remains dry and sunny until late May, when there is a dramatic uptick in frequency and amount of rainfall that lasts until late September. Summers are warm, rainy (more so than it is sunny) and damp, with June, the warmest month, averaging 18.4 °C. Autumn sees an abrupt reduction in rainfall and return to sunniness. The annual mean temperature is 12.70 °C, while precipitation averages 968 mm, around 80% of which occurs from June to September. With monthly percent possible sunshine ranging from 32% in July to 80% in December, the city receives 2,463 hours of bright sunshine annually.
OLD TOWN
The world famous Old Town of Lijiang is located in Lijiang City. It is a UNESCO Heritage Site.
The town has a history going back more than 800 years and was once a confluence for trade along the old tea horse road. The Lijiang old town is famous for its orderly system of waterways and bridges. The old town of Lijiang differs from other ancient Chinese cities in architecture, history and the culture of its traditional residents the Nakhi people, therefore people there are called 胖金哥 and 胖金妹 (pàng jīn gē, pàng jīn mèi, male and female respectively). The town was ruled by the Mu Family during the portions of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, a period of nearly 500 years.
Overlooking Lijiang Old Town is Lion Hill and at its summit is the Wangu Pavilion, which is a wooden building that stands 33 m tall and boasts 10,000 dragon carvings. The pavilion is constructed on 16 columns each of 22 m in height. The pavilion is a masterpiece of Qing Dynasty architecture that has been extensively restored following the designation of Lijiang Old Town as a UNESCO Heritage Site.
From Lion's Hill it is possible to view the entire Li River valley, including both the old city and new city of Lijiang. Looking Northwest, the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is dominates the horizon.
The Old Town is a maze of winding cobblestone streets. It is extremely easy to get lost as there is no grid, but each turn takes one to some new interesting spot, and it's not hard to eventually find one's way out of the maze and back to familiar territory. The layout of the town was established to conform to the flow of 3 streams in adherence to Feng Shui design, so there was water and waste disposal for the inhabitants. The Old Town has fast become a destination for young Chinese artists, students, and adventurers. Most recently, it has become a favored Spring Break destination for students. "Bar Street" is a line of clubs with live music, dancing, and revelry. The Old Town has a multitude of shops, some a bit tourist oriented, but several showcasing handcrafts, individual artists, and local manufacturers of interesting personal products.
There are dozens of restaurants, from snacks to high end dining, all very reasonably priced, cheap by Western standards.
Accommodations are varied, but the most interesting are the large number of boutique hotels run by individuals and families. These boutique hotels are in old traditional houses converted to rooms, courtyards, and gathering places, and designs all trend to traditional Chinese sensibilities. There are new high end hotel and condominium developments starting construction from 2011 forward, so there is a definite push to make the destination one for all tastes and not just young adventurers.
NEARBY
Some tens of miles north of Lijiang is the Baishui Terrace (白水台 Baishuitai, literally "White Water Terrace"), an area where spring water flows over a sinter terrace, leaving behind travertine. Lijiang is also close to the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山).
A few miles north of Lijiang is the village of Baisha, famous for the Baisha Fresco and the Naxi Hand-made Embroidery Institute. The Fresco was built in the Ming Dynasty 600 years ago, the Naxi Hand-made Embroidery Institute was built 800 years ago, it is the headquarters of the Naxi embroideries and also, a school for the Naxi embroiderers. There are many Naxi embroidery masters, teachers, students and local farmers there. Their embroidery arts can be found there.

Finally a four door! Front/ engine remains largely the same, and this also features the same abysmal fuzzy photos that has plagued me tonight.

A wearable, functional miniature journal for your thoughts, I wear a time worn, distressed leather coat which was once the back of a vintage Egyptian cushion.
Between my vintage endpapers which feature Italian handwriting, I’m filled with 36 sheets (72 pages) of hand torn, tea stained paper for your creations. Feel free to sketch, draw, doodle, write or even stick things in me (provided it isn’t sharp). Hand stitched with archival linen thread, I’ll bundle up your musings with my strong double length brown leather tie.
Hanging from an antique bronze mother-son link chain which secures with a lobster clasp, my total length of 14 inches means you can read or write in me while I’m around your neck.

This table was made from particle board and resin. What a way to showcase common and often ignored material!
Drilled a lens board real quick and mounted up the first lens that came to hand, a Nikkor-W 210/5.6. This camera is fully operational.
These are the cheapest possible vinyl tiles I could find. I could have put down black and white checkers, which would have been cooler, but that would have cost twice as much. And besides, it'll be covered in chicken litter soon enough.
These are adhesive-backed stick-down tiles. They are outrageously easy to put down; I did the middle of the floor in half an hour last night and the edges (which required cutting) in another hour this morning.
Part of a small group of houses at Silverton, near Dumbarton, Scotland. They occupy a corner of an estate whose houses are otherwise conventional, with pitched roofs. It's as though they weren't quite sure what they were doing. In one place flat-roofed houses with bay windows looked out at houses of precisely the same pattern on the opposite side of the road, but with pitched roofs. I'm not sure whether it's accurate to call these houses "Modernist". They are so highly stylised that they belong to no style, being merely cubes with windows. I quite like their grim functionalism; all the same I wouldn't want too much of it.
Modern, Functional and Considered
The concept behind this collection is the fusion of two disparate aesthetics - the elegance and agility of fencing and the nobleness and proportions of traditional Russian costume. This 'fusion' was initially achieved through digital collage which created inventive and asymmetrical silhouette ideas. This collection is not only wearable but modern, functional and considered.
