I decaled and weathered this Penn Central SD45 and lent it to my friend Kyle (who took this photo) to enjoy for a while. He took this loco, along with his blue SD45, and some of his freight cars to another friend's railroad, that of Dave Weber.
This hobby is a lot more fun with good friends who can team up like this to share trains, railroad, tips, ideas, photos, etc.
The Monongahela heritage locomotive leads mixed freight train 34N through a snow squall at East Palestine, Ohio.
BNSF H-BARSDG1-26A rolls along Torrey Pines State Beach and the Pacific Ocean in beautiful Del Mar, California. Daylight freight isn't on the regular schedule on this absurdly busy single-track commuter railroad. However, delays and recrews periodically will force the dispatchers to squeeze the "BarDiego" through in between all of the Amtrak, Metrolink, and Coaster traffic. Even during summer high sun, seeing this freight snake its way along the Coast is a wonderful sight.
When the Lehigh Valley bought C628’s from Alco in 1965, they were delivered in a striking white, black and red paint scheme and were dubbed “snowbirds” by the local fans. Variants of the snowbird scheme were applied to several classes of freight cars, including this fifty foot covered hopper seen here at Enola, Pennsylvania two years after the LV ceased to exist.
I'm overdue for another morning out here, it's always worthwhile. Until then, however, here's one that's been laying around for a while from a trip last year.
Connecticut Southern Railroad's Hartford to Springfield turn job CSO-4 is led by a pair of B39-8Es in the form of orange repainted CSOR 3901 and CSOR 8530 still in its as delivered LMX gray paint and number dating from it Nov. 1987 build date by GE.
They are on Amtrak's Springfield Line main near MP 50 crossing the Connecticut River on the Warehouse Point Bridge crossing from the town of Windsor Locks into Enfield. The 1470 ft long double track bridge (though only one track is in service) dates from 1903 when the circa 1866 iron bridge was rebuilt by the New Haven Railroad, but even that structure was the second one on the site replacing a wooden Howe truss that first crossed here in 1843 by NH predecessor Hartford and Springfield Railroad.

In the winter spirit, Lewts and I painted this winter tribute freight the other day. Had been wanting to do this for a while. In retrospect, I might have changed a few things...
The light was horrible and the loco LHF but freight was in short supply on this trip so you take what you can get. 2062 019 roars uphill with a hopper train.
With more letters in its name than miles in its route, the Lake Erie Franklin and Clarion Railroad joined the per-diem boxcar craze of the late 1970’s. Here one of those cars passes through Allentown, Pennsylvania.
Canadian Pacific H19 (La Crosse-St Paul) makes its way through Winona, MN slowing to take the siding ahead with three clean engines upfront.
A southbound (eastbound) Wisconsin Central freight led by WC F45 No. 6653, casts a silhouette against a sky still glowing with sunset south of Rugby, Wisconsin, on March 15, 1997.
A westbound Burlington Northern freight passes through the North Dakota Badlands at Sully Springs on August 9, 1991. The train is powered by EMD SD40-2 No. 6926, mated with one of BN’s unique GE B30-7A “B unit” No. 4043. BN originally had a fleet of 120 of these 3,000 h.p. cabless locomotives built between June 1982 and October 1983 and numbered 4000-4119.
Today I did something that I haven't done in a long time: take a day off to make photos of passenger trains. Passenger. Trains. Really.
The intercity trains between Schaarbeek and Kortrijk are still hauled by vintage 21 and 27 series locomotives. These machines are about my age and as such I've known them all my active railfanning life. They are being gradually withdrawn though, and this realizing was one of the factors deciding to spend a day chasing them. Another important factor being that I had found a lot of nice spot between Oudenaarde and Zottegem during my bicyle rides, but I didn't make photos there yet.
With the locomotives oriented on the Kortrijk-side of the trains, they would only show a sunny face in the afternoon. The morning I spent picturing 2 freight trains on locations I wanted to try out for a while.

After performing their daily customer work in Paterson and Clifton, NS H-55 runs west past Suscon Interlocking on NJ Transit's Main Line at Hawthorne, NJ. The regular pair of 5600 series GP38-2s takes their train past the interchange yard and connection to the NYS&W's Southern Division.
Pulling down the Wash into Milwaukee, CP 641 pulled length of mixed freight and empty ethanol cans as they roll west into downtown behind a pair of SD40s after a bad order gets set out in Muskego Yard.

It's been a good while since we last had a decent freight train along this section of the ex- Furness route, but hopefully this might become a regular flow, at least in the short term.
On a day when the majority of the country was blessed with unbroken sunshine, 68003 'Astute' traverses the Kent estuary over Arnside Viaduct with 6C15, the 10.00 Drigg BNF - Shap Summit Quarry empty stone on Thurs 6th February 2025.
The current flow of trains are moving stone from Shap Quarry into the Low Level Waste Repository at Drigg BNF for the capping of vaults.

On my visit last summer freight traffic was rather sparse on the Phyrnbahn. It was the Friday after an unknown to me Thursday holiday which likely did not help things. The ÖBB freight I did manage was the morning DG 54791 (Linz Vbf - Graz Vbf). I did not have any info on the freight traffic so between passenger trains I camped out just south of the northbound photo curve in Windischgarsten so I could easily reposition (as easily as one can by bike) for either direction. As luck would have it I was able to shoot two southbounds, first a DB Cargo train and then this much more interesting 1142 powered move.
Bijna dag op dag twee jaar geleden trokken Wouter en ik naar Duitsland voor een dagje fotograferen langs de spoorlijnen aan de Rijn en de Moezel. Ook een bezoek aan het mooie plekje in Braubach stond op ons lijstje. Het was er vrij rustig op het vlak van goederentreinen – al mogen we natuurlijk niet klagen, want met de Eurodual van DB Cargo hadden we wel een topvangst. Maar ook een foto van een gewone Flirt doet het volgens mij prima op deze plek, die gekruid wordt door het fraaie uitzicht op het dorpje en de Marksburg bovenop de heuvel.

Almost exactly two years ago, Wouter and I headed to Germany for a day of photographing along the railway lines by the Rhine and the Moselle. A visit to the lovely spot in Braubach was also on our list. It was relatively quiet in terms of freight traffic — though we certainly couldn’t complain, since we scored a real highlight with the DB Cargo Eurodual. But even a shot of a regular Flirt works well at this location, which is made all the more special by the scenic view of the village and the Marksburg perched on the hill above.
