The Bayon temple forms the heart of the old capital of Angkor Thom and is one of the highlights of a visit to Cambodia, second only to nearby Angkor Wat as a marvel of ancient Khmer architecture. At first glance one can be forgiven for thinking it isn't architecture at all but some kind of natural rock formation, its many towers resembling rocky outcrops pointing at the sky. The true nature of these towers is only revealed as one approaches and sees the multitude of huge carved faces smiling down from them, a feature for which this temple is justly renowned.
Built in the late 12th or early 13th century by King Jayavarman VII, the temple was originally intended as a Hindu place of worship but was soon after adapted to Buddhist use when the state religion of Angkor shifted from one faith to the other. As a result the identity of the great faces is uncertain, some see them as the benign face of Buddha or the bodhisatva Lokesvara while others maintain that the Hindu god Brahma is the more likely candidate. It has also been considered that they may respresent King Jayavarman VII himself owing to the resemblance of surviving statues of him, which have the same serene smile. Whatever the truth of their identity, the cast their serene gazes over visitors from all directions and make a visit to the temple's upper terraces (from where they can be seen at close quarters) all the more memorable.
The temple is formed by an enormous (and craggy looking) central stupa surrounded by many smaller towers with faces carved on all four sides arising from raised terraces. Around the entire temple is a (formerly) covered corridor adorned with an extensive sequence of reliefs depicting historical and mythological scenes. This would normally be a major attraction in itself, but most visitors will only see certain sections of the reliefs as the more impressive architectural flourishes of the temple's heart inevitably command the most attention.
The Bayon temple is a place that has fascinated me ever since childhood when I first saw images from my mother's visit here in the 1960s. There is simply no other ancient monument quite like it!

Para participar de este taller, sólo bastan con asistir el día y la hora al lugar que ha sido fijada la clase, llenar una matrícula gratuita directamente con la profesora, y ya serás parte del fútbol femenino en la Ciudad del Deporte. No faltes!
Con el fin de conocer la forma en que las familias de la urbanización Bosques de Bengala de Manizales avanzan hacia la superación de la pobreza extrema, se realizó una nueva jornada de "Cogestor por Un Día" con los ministros del despacho.
En esta oportunidad el Ministro de Hacienda Mauricio Cárdenas y la directora de Prosperidad Social Tatyana Orozco, visitaron los hogares en este proyecto de vivienda gratuita que recibe el acompañamiento social por parte de los Cogestores de la Red Unidos.
Para Tatyana Orozco, "con esta actividad se sigue la instrucción dada por el presidente Juan Manuel Santos a todos los ministros para atender personalmente a las familias en situación de pobreza extrema, e identificar las carencias de estos hogares en temas de trabajo, generación de ingresos, educación, capacitación, salud, nutrición, y habitabilidad entre otros."
Adicionalmente el Ministro de Hacienda conoció de cerca el trabajo que realizan los Cogestores Sociales, pues son ellos quienes atienden a cada familia en condición de pobreza extrema y realizan un diagnóstico de la situación de cada hogar.
Con la información obtenida por los Cogestores, la Red UNIDOS gestiona el acceso a la oferta tanto pública como privada para atender las necesidades de la población.
La estrategia Red UNIDOS, coordinada por la Agencia Nacional para la Superación de la Pobreza Extrema - ANSPE, permite que los hogares en condición de vulnerabilidad del país puedan acceder a la oferta institucional que tiene el Estado.
Así mismo, los Cogestores Sociales bautizados por el presidente Santos como el "Ejército Social", realizan seguimiento individual de las familias para verificar el cumplimiento de los logros, con el fin de que logren superar la pobreza extrema.
SEGUIMIENTO PARQUE VILAMARÍA
Durante la jornada, la Directora de Prosperidad Social y el Ministro de Hacienda tuvieron un almuerzo en un restaurante propiedad de una asociación de madres beneficiarias de Más Familias en Acción. Allí, en medio de una tradicional frijolada, respondieron a las inquietudes de las participantes del programa.
Igualmente visitaron el municipio de Villamaría, donde hicieron seguimiento a la remodelación del parque principal, con el cual se contribuye al mejoramiento de la calidad de vida de los villamarianos, obra con la que se han generado 37 empleos locales de mano de obra no calificada. Las colúmbidas (Columbidae) son una familia de aves del orden Columbiformes que incluye las palomas, las tórtolas y formas afines. Son, en total, unas 308 especies.
Las colúmbidas se distribuyen por todo el mundo, excepto la Antártida y el Ártico, y con centro de dispersión en América Central. La mayor diversidad de especies la tienen la ecozona indomalaya y la ecozona de Australasia.
Son aves dotadas de gran inteligencia (si se las compara con otras aves), y monógamas; esta característica les permite un gran cuidado de sus crías e, incluso, quizás una relación afectiva (etológica) importante entre progenitores y descendencia. La monogamia entre las palomas, por otra parte, parece facilitar en gran medida una alta tasa reproductiva (pese a que también, como otros animales silvestres, las palomas sufren de una gran mortandad “infantil”). Las crías de palomas, al poco tiempo de estar listas para autosustentarse y lo suficientemente desarrolladas como para volar, son expulsadas del territorio en que anida la pareja progenitora, ya que la misma generalmente vuelve a procrear en poco tiempo otros dos pichones a los que la pareja de padre y madre dedica gran dedicación y cuidado (la madre suele quedarse gran parte de su tiempo en el sencillo nido empollando los huevos y luego cuidando a los pichones mientras el padre o palomo busca alimentos para nutrir a la familia).
Los nidos, normalmente débiles, están elaborados con pequeñas ramas, y los huevos, habitualmente dos, son incubados por ambos sexos. Naturalmente las palomas se alimentan de semillas y frutos. Ambos sexos alimentan a sus crías con una secreción muy nutritiva denominada leche del buche, que se segrega por células especiales.
Aparte de tener un gran sentido de la orientación, la paloma es una de las aves que más rápido vuela: alcanza los 56 km/h.2 También caracteriza a las palomas su agudísimo sentido de la vista: la Guardia Costera de los Estados Unidos suele equipar a sus helicópteros de rescate con un par de palomas ubicadas en una pequeña cabina con ventanales hacia la parte inferior delantera del vehículo, ya que las palomas pueden ver, mucho antes que el ser humano, la cabeza flotante de un náufrago en alta mar, advirtiéndolo con sus rumoreos y picotazos. Esto es prácticamente imposible de realizar por los ojos humanos y sus dispositivos (o gadgets), aún en pleno día despejado.
Las palomas jóvenes se denominan pichones, y las personas que crían palomas se denominan colombófilos.
Aunque son tan pacíficas que alegorizan a la paz, debido a la presión de las circunstancias (por ejemplo la pérdida de fuentes de alimento o lugares para anidar, problemas que suelen ser ocasionados por los humanos), el estrés puede provocarles violencia intraespecífica, en la cual pueden matarse entre ellas y matar a los pichones de otras parejas de congéneres para intentar subsistir.

Peking Opera excerpt from Mu Guiying Takes Command-Accepting the Seal. Mu Guiying is a famous female general and the granddaughter-in-law of the prominent Generals of the Yang family in the Northern Song Dynasty (AD 960– 1127). When Western Xia invades, the emperor orders a martial arts competition to select a Chief Commander. Mu Guiying, who is now retired and in her fifties, refuses to accept the seal at first. But later persuaded by the Dowager She, she decides to accept the post to defend the country.

Ngô Thanh Nhàn, Ph.D. Linguistics, is a fellow in Vietnamese Nôm and Folk Music Studies of the Center for Vietnamese Philosophy, Culture & Society of Temple University. Dr. Nhàn is a coordinator of the Vietnam Agent Orange Relief & Responsibility Campaign. He currently teaches đàn tranh[Vietnamese 16-string zither] at the Folk Arts–Cultural Treasures Charter School with the support of Asian Americans United. Dr. Nhàn also organizes regular hybrid đàn tranh intensive classes under Manhattan Academy of Music and Language, Inc. in New York
hosted by Mekong NYC. Dr. Nhàn will perform with Fiona Zhao.

KyoDaiko offers regular taiko classes and can be hired for events, workshops and team-building activities.

The Philadelphia Suns have performed traditional Chinese Lion Dance since our inception in 1972. This 1000-year-old cultural dance has been passed through the generations as part of martial arts training. Traditionally performed at festive occasions like grand openings, weddings, parties and other special events, a lion dance is performed to scare away evil spirits. Today, lion dances have taken on the form of a celebratory dance where acrobatic movements are performed to the rhythmic music of drum, gong, and cymbal. Our team is composed of volunteers and all funds donated go towards our programs.

Aberrant form of Lycaena Tityrus
(Sooty copper)
Aberrations are rare butterflies showing characteristics that deviate from the normal type. In some specimens the differences are minimal, in some others they make it difficult to recognize the species. This butterfly show the typical features of the Sooty Copper, but also some elongated spots which clearly show its aberrant nature.

Element: Form
The shadows and the highlights on Marisa's face give her dimension. This shows form because her shape becomes three dimensional due to the lighting.
Principle: Contrast
The lights on Marisa's head contrast with the darkness in the background. The equal amount of light and darkness really contributes to the contrast in this picture.
Camera Use: This photo was shot with a wide aperture, which put the focus on the lights on Marisa's head. I used a lower ISO number in order to keep the picture darker. I also used a low f stop and did not use flash.
Editing: While editing in Lightroom, I added warmer tones to the picture and darkened the shadows in the background. I also increasing the vibrancy and clarity.
Summary: I like this photo because the lights make the portrait more interesting. I also like how the picture was taken mid-laugh, capturing a good moment.

The gorilla is the largest living primate. A gorilla must spend most of its day eating plants to maintain its large size. Despite its massive size and ferocious reputation, the gorilla is actually a peaceful and social animal. Gorillas and humans are close relatives, and share many things in common. They are very intelligent, have emotions and personalities, and live in family groups.
A troop of up to 20 gorillas is led and defended by a dominant male called a silverback.
A male gorilla has the strength of up to eight men.
Chest-beating is one way a gorilla shows that it’s excited.
Gorillas and humans have the same number of hairs on their bodies.
