Shot with the flash, yet the fire in the background is still amazing.

This was taken during Greystones Camera Club workshop night where we learned about flash, smoke photography, waterdrops, tethering. Thank you Sean, Faerghal, John, Graham and Kaman for sharing your knowledge

Steph loves the Bavabici cap and so do I. It looks great on her and shot really well in the dark with the flash.

Meninas eu amo o efeito flocado e achei perfeita essa combinação.

Fica muito elegante e arraso total.

E vocês gostam desse efeito?

I was hoping to get a nice full moon shot idea done tonight…..but the clouds had other plans. Randomly looked for something around the house to photograph with interesting texture and that could be lit well. I wandered into the bathroom and found this shaving cream can to be quite nice…. then as i was photographing it…..thinking…hmmmm…. i need better shadows for the lines….i need to change the angle of light to get better shadows…..I thought SHADOWS!….Perfect….laughed and realized i could develop it into a cool/ clever idea/concept shot. I think you can figure it out. Maybe subconsciously i was thinking how i do like the look of a guy who can pull off the slightly scruffy five o'clock shadow look….ha…. Instead of hand lighting this i decided to use an off camera flash through a hand held soft box aimed in the particular direction to have desired shadow look. Only a few takes and had it in the can. Bam. Cropped to square and converted from Raw to B+W.

Achieved the so called "impossible" with my flash, which is a Canon 430EX. It is said that one cannot use this flash off the camera without a "master", which in the case of Canon would be a 580EX II for nearly $500 or a PocketWizard for about $250.. I wanted neither, I wanted a penney cheap solution.. I got one! Here are the details, in case you are stuck like I was.

This shot was created using the 430EX in my left hand, connected to my camera via a 3.6M /10 FEET E-TTL Off-Camera Shoe Cord, which has a windy cord that reaches 10 feet away. I was not 10 feet here since this was my test shot to see if it works! The system can be found here: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003GR6IUK/ref=oss_product for $28.

I also added a softbox to my flash, which allows it to spread the light nicer: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0038QS2NU/ref=oss_product this is the medium size for $15.

This picture was taken with Canon 5D Mark II and EF 50mm f/1.4 at f/11 with ISO100 and shutter speed 1/60. The flash was in manual mode at 1/2 but this was enough to override the faint natural light coming into the room, so it appears as if I took this picture in the dark but actually I did not. =)

I left this picture larger size than my normal for flickr so you can see the details, which are really clear and sharp in this shot. I did not enhance the shot, only cropped in a bit and sharpened for print.

I am very happy with this solution. I also purchased a cheap equivalent to the PocketWizard, yet to arrive and be tested.. I will report on that once I receive it.
